Introduction:Walking as embodied research in emergent Anthropocene landscapes
No full textIn this chapter the authors introduce the volume as a whole. They locate their interest in walking as a form of research practice in the Walking Seminar Project which they began in 2012. Pointing out that there is no such thing as ‘walking-in-itself’ but rather many different modes of walking, they argue that any contemporary walking project needs to be cognizant of the growing number of involuntary walkers, exemplified in refugee and migrant mobilities. Arguing that there has been an uptick in interest in walking methodologies across a range of disciplines in recent years, they offer a review of the recent literature on walking as research practice. They further situate their approach in relation to two areas of contemporary debate. The first is the broad debate around the Anthropocene and the implications of the climate emergency. The second is the contemporary discussion around decolonial thinking and practices, and the conceptual and methodological challenge of walking with decolonial intention

Get PDFWe had hoped for a substantive response around the argument presented in ‘What’s up with WAC?’, instead Claire Smith has responded with a list of what she styles as ‘errors of fact and errors of representation’. Nevertheless, we thank her for the attention with which she has read our paper, and we look forward to the ‘more discursive response’ which she indicates will be forthcoming. A careful reading of Smith’s response yields fi ve points at which she correctly identifi es errors of fact in our paper. So, for the sake of the record, and in the interests of getting this over with, here goes: • It is correct that most of the books distributed through the Global Libraries Programme are new rather than second-hand; • It is correct that Colombia’s bid for WAC-6 competed against Ireland rather than Jamaica, after Jamaica’s bid had been rejected; • It is correct that the room of the WAC/ Rio Tinto meeting in Melbourne was not — literally — ‘full of lawyers’. Rather, the tone of the proceedings was legalistic, and signifi cant Rio Tinto input came from ‘community agreements’ and ‘community relations’ specialists with legal training; • The sentence ‘WAC would become an archaeological/scientifi c organization whose salaried offi ce holders were paid by Rio Tinto’, should read ‘WAC would become an archaeological/scientifi c organization whose salaried secretariat was paid by Rio Tinto’; • The countries proposed for the WAC/ Rio Tinto try-out were not Cameroon and Argentina as stated, but Gabon and Argentina.Fil: Shepherd, Nick. No full textLa disciplina de la arqueología ha estado generalmente ausente de la discusión contemporánea sobre decolonialidad y de la crítica de la colonialidad y la modernidad. Los principales pensadores, ensayistas y practicantes decoloniales provienen de una variedad de disciplinas y campos, incluyendo la semiótica, la teoría literaria, la losofía, la sociología, los estudios religiosos y la antropología. Una de las carac- terísticas de este proyecto colectivo ha sido su carácter transdiscipli- nario amplio. Esto hace que la ausencia de la arqueología sea aún más notable. Este libro pretende corregir esa situación. Nuestra intención es que los tres ensayos y la conversación que componen el libro sean una declaración de apertura para la articulación entre la arqueología y la decolonialidad. Por un lado, ofrecemos una perspectiva especí - camente arqueológica al pensamiento y la práctica decoloniales. Por otra parte, presentamos una perspectiva decolonial sobre las ideas y formas de práctica arqueológicas más fundamentales como un proyec- to transformativo de la arqueología indisciplinada. Abogamos por la importancia de una perspectiva arqueológica en las discusiones sobre decolonialidad. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
