Overexpression of Cyclin D1 and C-Myc Gene Products in Human Primary Epithelial Ovarian Cancer
Cyclin D1 and c-Myc are key participants in the cell-cycle pathway, in which aberrancies have been associated with malignant transformation. To date, data on the relationship of expression of these proteins and histologic subtype of epithelial ovarian cancer are still scarce and discordant. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on 12 normal ovaries and 47 cases of serous, mucinous, endometrioid, and clear cell ovarian carcinomas. No abnormal expression of cyclin D1 or c-Myc was demonstrated in any of the 12 normal ovarian specimens. However, compared to normal ovarian tissues, overexpression of cyclin D1 and c-Myc was observed in 42.6% (20/47) and 65.9% (31/47) of tumors examined, respectively. There was no significant difference of overexpression of cyclin D1 or c-Myc gene products between these four histologic subtypes of ovarian adenocarcinomas. This study shows that cyclin D1 and c-Myc are frequently overexpressed in epithelial ovarian carcinomas, but they are not correlated with a particular histologic subtype. Although our preliminary results need to be validated in a larger number of tumors, the abnormal expression of cyclin D 1 and c-Myc in epithelial ovarian cancer reaffirms the notion that they are crucial components in the pathway of tumorigenesis and deserve further study
Molecular structure of highly excited resonant states in Mg-24 and the corresponding Be-8+O-16 and C-12+C-12 decays
Exotic Be-8 and C-12 decays from high-lying resonances in Mg-24 are analyzed in terms of a cluster model. The calculated quantities agree well with the corresponding experimental data. It is found that the calculated decay widths are very sensitive to the angular momentum carried by the outgoing cluster. It is shown that this property makes cluster decay a powerful tool to determine the spin as well as the molecular structures of the resonances.Physics, NuclearSCI(E)7ARTICLE5null8

Abstract
PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of topical mitomycin C in corneal wound healing (CWH) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in highly myopic eyes.
DESIGN: Prospective, double-masked, randomized clinical trial.
PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients affected by high (>7 diopters) myopia.
METHODS: In each patient, one eye was randomly assigned to PRK with intraoperative topical 0.02% mitomycin C application, and the fellow eye was treated with a placebo. Postoperatively, mitomycin C-treated eyes received artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months), whereas the fellow eye was treated with fluorometholone sodium 2% and artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, manifest refraction, and biomicroscopy. Contrast sensitivity was determined using the Pelli-Robson chart. Corneal confocal microscopy documented CWH.
RESULTS: Mean follow-up was 18 months (range, 12-36). No side effects or toxic effects were documented. At 12-month follow-up examination, UCVAs (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) were 0.4+/-0.48 and 0.5+/-0.53 (P = .03) in mitomycin C-treated eyes and corticosteroid-treated eyes, respectively. At 1 year, corneal haze developed in 20% of corticosteroid-treated eyes, versus 0% of mitomycin C-treated eyes. At 12, 24, and 36 months, corneal confocal microscopy showed activated keratocytes and extracellular matrix significantly more evident in untreated eyes (Ps = 0.004, 0.024, and 0.046, respectively).
CONCLUSION: Topical intraoperative application of 0.02% mitomycin C can reduce haze formation in highly myopic eyes undergoing PRK.

C-14 and Be-10 in dust deposited during the storm of 16-17 April 2006 in Beijing
The concentrations of Be-10 and C-14 and values of delta C-13 in samples collected during a major dust storm in Beijing on 16-17 April 2006 were studied. The Be-10 concentrations ranged from 1.69 x 10(8) to 2.07 x 10(8) atom/g, C-14 ages for black carbon (BC) ranged from 3001 to 5181 yr BP and for total inorganic carbon (TIC) from 8464 to 9119 yr BP, and delta C-13 values for BC ranged from -23.15% to -23.80% and for TIC from -5.39% to -5.98%. A comparison of BC content and delta C-13 value between the dust, surface soil in the dust source region, and aerosols in Beijing indicated that BC in the dust deposited in Beijing is significantly incorporated by aerosol BC during the dust transportation. Based on the C-14 ages of BC, the proportion of fossil-fuel-derived BC was 0.35-0.49 of the total. In contrast to BC, the TIC deposited in Beijing can be firmly related to the source area and delta C-13 was not significantly modified during its transportation. According to the C-14 ages of TIC, the proportion of the secondary carbonate in the dust was from 0.63 to 0.70. The results confirm that C-14 of TIC is another useful tracer to indicate the source region of dust besides the content and delta C-13 value of TIC from the arid and semi-arid regions of China.Geochemistry & GeophysicsSCI(E)0ARTICLE2-31790-18005
B -> eta K-c(eta ' K-c) decays in QCD factorization
We study the exclusive decays of the B meson into pseudoscalar charmonium states eta(c) and eta(c)' within the QCD factorization approach and find that the non-factorizable corrections to naive factorization are infrared safe at leading-twist order. The spectator interactions arising from the kaon twist-3 effects are formally power suppressed but chirally and logarithmically enhanced. An important improvement by including the O(alpha(s)) corrections is the cancellation of the renormalization scale mu dependence of the decay amplitude. However, the calculated decay rates are too small to accommodate the experimental data. Evidence of a structure in (K)over-bar(0)Lambda(+)(c) consistent with a charged Xi(c)(2930)(+), and updated measurement of (B)over-bar(0) -˃ (K)over-bar(0)Lambda(+)(c) (Lambda)over-bar(c)(-) at Belle
We report evidence for the charged charmed-strange baryon Xi(c)(2930)(+) with a signal significance of 3.9 sigma with systematic errors included. The charged Xi(c)(2930)(+) is found in its decay to K-S(0)Lambda(+)(c) in the substructure of (B) over bar (0) -> K-S(0)Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar (-)(c) decays. The measured mass and width are [2942.3 +/- 4.4(stat.) +/- 1.5(syst.)] MeV/c(2) and [14.8 +/- 8.8(stat.) +/- 2.5(syst.)] MeV, respectively, and the product branching fraction is B((B) over bar (0) -> Xi(c)(2930)(+)(Lambda) over bar (-)(c)) B(Xi(c)(2930)(+) -> (K) over bar (0)(S)Lambda(+)(c)) = [2.37 +/- 0.51(stat.) +/- 0.31 (syst.)] x 10(-4). We also measure B((B) over bar (0) -> (K) over bar (0)(S)Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar (-)(c)) = [3.99 +/- 0.76(stat.) +/- 0.51(syst.)] x 10(-4) with greater precision than previous experiments, and present the results of a search for the charmonium-like state Y (4660) and its spin partner, Y-eta, in the Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar (-)(c) invariant mass spectrum. No clear signals of the Y (4660) or Y-eta are observed and the 90% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their production rates are determined. Thesemeasurements are obtained from a sample of (772 +/- 11) x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider
Phenolic Acid and Flavonoid Content Analysis with Antioxidant Activity Assessment in Chinese C. pi. Shen Honey
The nutritional value of honey is closely related to its components, which are highly influenced by the botanic origin. C. pi. Shen (Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) var. modesta (Nannf.) L. T. Shen), a key plant in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly produced in Gansu Province of China, has attracted much attention for its medicinal value. However, there are few reports about C. pi. Shen honey. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the contents of phenolic profiles and antioxidant activities in C. pi. Shen honey by colorimetric, UPLC-MS/MS, Ferric ion Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), 2,2-bisazo-bis (3-ethyl-benzothiazole-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radical capacity, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine (DPPH) scavenging ability methods. In comparison with four other high-yield unifloral honeys in China (Acacia honey, linden honey, rape honey, and jujube honey), C. pi. Shen honey demonstrated remarkable advantages. Specifically, the levels of total phenolic acids, total flavonoids, and phenolic components of C. pi. Shen honey were significantly pronounced, especially protocatechuic acid and kaempferol. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of C. pi. Shen honey was also excellent, which was attributed to its phenolic compounds, underscoring its potential biological value.
