Battle of the Blockbusters: Joss Whedon as Public Pedagogue
This article discusses the concept of public pedagogy and the reasons for considering it relevant to the work of the writer/ director/ producer Joss Whedon, creator of numberous TV programmes, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, and Films Serenity, Marvel's The Avengers and The Age of Ultron. It analyzes Marvel’s The Avengers (Whedon, 2012) and Christopher Nolan’s (2012b) The Dark Knight Rises as competing public pedagogies. It suggests that popular films can be seen as important educational projects; filmmakers have tremendous resources at their disposal and their creations have a global reach that cannot be matched by individual teachers or national education systems. Whedon can be seen as a radical educator; he enables his audiences to experience ways of looking at the world that challenge aspects of neo-liberal hegemony, and also encourages them to become critical thinkers who have to reflect on their own feelings and perspectives and resist simplistic perspectives on morality and the difficult political choices facing global society
The study of the offerings in Hong Kong : Joss paper ingots, Joss candles and Joss sticks
Giving offerings has a long history in Chinese culture. Over the years, under the influence of local traditions, Confucianist and Taoist, as well as the introduction of foreign Buddhism, offerings have been changing in their materials and ways of usage.
"Joss paper ingots, Joss candles and Joss sticks" is how Hong Kong people name the most common offerings made for rituals. The offerings play a crucial role in various situations connected to worshipping gods, ancestors and ghosts in vernacular religious practices. However, these practices were overlooked in academic research and literature.
This thesis examines how religious practices and especially offerings are involved in Hong Kong people's daily lives, regular and occasional ceremonies and rituals. The research is based on fieldwork conducted by the author to investigate the specific features and situations of offerings and worship in Hong Kong and Macau.https://www.ester.ee/record=b5768906*es
How to be a woman. Models of masochism and sacrifice in young adult fiction
Buffy, Bella, Veronica, Katniss, Clary, Tris and Saba : For two decades post-feminist heroines have faced life-threatening trials as part of their progress to womanhood. In this chapter I consider how young adult popular fictions operate as forms of pedagogy for young women by offering them particular models of maturity and womanhood. I explore the recurrence and reformulation of a persistent pattern of behaviour in which heroines engage in risky and/or masochistic behaviours for which they are emotionally rewarded.. These recurrences function as a form of vicarious experiential learning in which readers and viewers learn that emotional gratification and adult status are conferred through self-harm and self-sacrifice. Popular culture is not a monolithic form and young adult fictions are no exception. An analysis of fictional examples of this behaviour pattern challenges the idea that heroines today are empowered agents as a result of the legacy of feminism. At the same time, the analysis belies any notion that fictions are universally hegemonic and oppressive – fictions can and do disrupt and interrogate this pattern of emotional masochism. Scholars of public pedagogy have explored the complexities, contradictions and subtleties of the pedagogical process. Sandlin O’Malley and Burdick (2011) in their review of public pedagogy literature acknowledge that some scholarship has demonstrated how “the teaching and learning inherent within daily life can be both oppressive and resistant” (p. 144). Jubas and Knutson (2012) also see public pedagogy as an arena where contradictions and tensions are in play. They argue that we can see “New examples of dialectic or tensions … between the authority of the producer and the consumer; between traditional structures which ground identities and help people make sense of cultural texts, and personal agency which frees people to choose and invent identities and meanings” (p. 86). This analysis aims to contribute to understandings of the complexities of public pedagogy by showing how fictions aimed primarily at young women both resist and accommodate patriarchy
MANAJEMEN PRODUKSI PROGRAM ACARA KOPI JOSS DI JOGJA TV
The Kopi Joss Program is a program owned by Jogja TV which is included
in the type of reality show. The program of this event is packaged by combining
interactive performances. The production of the Kopi Joss program is carried out
regularly every week which is closely related to overall production management.
Therefore, the author intends to understand how the production management
process for the Kopi Joss program on Jogja TV is.
In this study the authors used a qualitative research method with a
descriptive approach. The object of this research is the production management of
the Kopi Joss Jogja TV program. The discussion raised was related to the
production management process for the Kopi Joss program. The author uses
George Terry's theoretical basis which consists of planning, organizing, actuating,
and controlling (POAC) approaches. Meanwhile the management process is based
on the constraints encountered in the implementation of management, resulting in
a flexible solution.
The results of the research consist of 3 main stages, namely pre-production,
production, and post-production. At the production stage, the producer holds
control in determining the program concept with applicable regulations and
broadcast licensing. The production stage is a form of realization and adjustment
of the built concept. The post-production stage focuses on editing visual and audio
material. Based on these stages, obstacles were found in the form of difficulty in
flexibility and talent selection, a strategy was carried out as a solution to the
obstacles that occurred

Joint contractures is a recurrent clinical feature of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorder due to FOXP1 likely gene disruptive variants
Haploinsufficiency of FOXP1 gene is responsible for a neurodevelopmental disorder presenting with intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), hypotonia, mild dysmorphic features, and multiple congenital anomalies. Joint contractures are not listed as a major feature of FOXP1-related disorder. We report five unrelated individuals, each harboring likely gene disruptive de novo FOXP1 variants or whole gene microdeletion, who showed multiple joint contractures affecting at least two proximal and/or distal joints. Consistent with the phenotype of FOXP1-related disorder, all five patients showed developmental delay with moderate-to-severe speech delay, ID, ASD, and facial dysmorphic features. FOXP1 is implicated in neuronal differentiation and in organizing motor axon projections, thus providing a potential developmental basis for the joint contractures. The combination of joint contractures and neurodevelopmental disorders supports the clinical suspicion of FOXP1-related phenotype
3dfier: automatic reconstruction of 3D city models
Three-dimensional city models are essential to assess the impact that environmental factors will have on citizens, because they are the input to several simulation and prediction software. Examples of such environmental factors are noise (Stoter et al., 2008), wind (Garcı́a-Sánchez et al., 2014), air pollution (Ujang et al., 2013), and temperature (Hsieh et al., 2011; Lee etal., 2013). However, those 3D models, which typically contain buildings and other man-made objects such as roads, overpasses, bridges, and trees, are in practice complex to obtain, and it is very time-consuming and tedious to reconstruct them manually. The software 3dfier addresses this issue by automating the 3D reconstruction process. It takes 2D geographical datasets (e.g., topographic datasets) that consist of polygons and “3dfies” them (as in “making them three-dimensional”). The elevation is obtained from an aerial point cloud dataset, and the semantics of the polygons is used to perform the lifting to the third dimension, so that it is realistic. The resulting 3D dataset is semantically decomposed/labelled based on the input polygons, and together they form one(many) surface(s) that aim(s) to be error-free: no self-intersections, no gaps, etc. Several output formats are supported (includingthe international standards), and the 3D city models are optimised for use in different software.Urban Data Scienc
PERANCANGAN LAPORAN KEUANGAN BERBASIS SAK-EMKM PADA USAHA BINATU JOSS LAUNDRY DI SURABAYA
Until now there are still many UMKM that have constraints in developing their business, where one of the causes of UMKM have not implemented the implementation plan of Financial Accounting Standards Micro, Small and Medium Entity (SAK EMKM) in the financial statements. The purpose of this research is to design financial report based on SAK EMKM in UMKM so that it can help UMKM prepare financial report based on SAK EMKM with its
simplicity principle. This research uses descriptive qualitative research method. The object of data in this research financial report design based on SAK EMKM at Joss Laundry Business in Surabaya because the laundry business Joss Laundry has not biased to make its own financial statements are good and true. Sources of data
used in this study are Primary Data and Secondary Data. Methods of data collection by interview method, observation. The results show that the laundry business Joss Laundry only has minimal financial records, such as incoming and outgoing cash books, purchase records, and sales records. So in an effort to develop the business, the authors feel the need to create a draft financial statements that fit the accounting standards of SAK EMKM. The preparation of Joss Laundry's financial report by the author has been in accordance with the accounting cycle consisting of collecting transaction documents, then entering into the accounting process, which then becomes a financial report based on Financial Accounting tandards Micro, Small and Medium Entity (SAK EMKM)
J.J. Abrams vs. Joss Whedon: Duel for Media Master of the Universe
J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon are two of the most imaginative and accomplished men in Hollywood. As writers, directors, producers, and series creators, their credits have straddled the mediums of television and film and range across several genres, from science fiction and horror to action and drama. In addition to spearheading original projects like Lost and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, each has also made his mark on some of the most successful franchises in popular culture—from Mission Impossible, Star Trek, and Star Wars (Abrams) to Alien and the Avengers (Whedon). Their output—both oddly similar and yet also wildly different—stand at the heart of twenty-first century film and television. In J.J. Abrams vs. Joss Whedon, Wendy Sterba compares the parallel careers in film and television of these creative masterminds—pitting one against the other in a light-hearted competition. With in-depth discussions of their works, the author seeks to determine who is the Spielberg (or perhaps the Lucas) of the twenty-first century. The author looks back upon the beginnings of both men’s careers—to Whedon’s stint as a writer on Roseanne to Abrams’ early scripts for films like Regarding Henry—and forward to their most recent blockbusters, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This books also looks at non-fantasy successes (Abrams series Felicity; Whedon’s adaptation of Much Ado about Nothing), as well as commercial failures. At the heart of this study, however, is a tour of their genre-defining hits: Alias and Buffy, Lost and Angel, Super 8 and Serenity along with Whedon’s Avengers films, and Abrams’ rebooted Star Trek adventures.Filled with sharp-eyed analysis, illuminating anecdotes, and unexpected connections, J.J. Abrams vs. Joss Whedon will appeal to fans of either (or both!) of its subjects, and to any fan of well-told tales of the fantastic, on screens large or small.https://digitalcommons.csbsju.edu/lngs_books/1002/thumbnail.jp
