Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Forest Restoration By Design: Utilizing Low-Value Species Harvested from Forest Restoration Projects in Local CLT Manufacture and Design
184 pagesClimate change is causing immense stress on our forests. Years of wildfire suppression and ever extending periods of drought are fanning the flames of catastrophic wildfires at an unnatural scale (Williams et al. 2019) (Ager et al. 2017). The west coast has suffered the brunt of these negative impacts as wildfire seasons are becoming increasingly worse every year, with California being severely impacted. The abundance of small-diameter trees and dry fuel accumulating in forests is reinforcing the need for better forest management practices as human activity in the last century has proven to be detrimental to the global climate (Williams et al. 2019). The goal of this research is to examine the relationship between collaborative forest restoration and local mass timber production in order to showcase the use of mass timber as a means to improve wildfire resilience and push the United States toward developing its mass timber industry at a local scale. The use of low-value species, harvested from forest restoration projects, in mass timber panels can create a symbiotic relationship between forestry, architecture, and the respective local economy. This project addresses the utilization of low value tree species, Ponderosa pine specifically, from forest restoration projects in the Sierra Nevada forests of California to manufacture mass timber locally that, in return, can provide the material for public lands facilities as demonstration projects in parks affected by wildfires
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Applications of Local-Species CLT and Forest Products in Northeastern Modular Housing
332 pagesThe rural landscape of the Northeastern region of the United States is predominantly defined by the abundant forest and timberland that exist in the region. Socioeconomically, today’s communities within these rural areas often lack economic opportunity, with a housing stock defined by the necessity for up-front affordability, such as manufactured homes. Many of the standard materials of these homes lack longevity, and are made from non-renewable and petroleum-based products. These materials are often harmful to humans, generating various health concerns while also being significant contributors to carbon and greenhouse-gas emissions through their production, short service-lives, and transportation from foreign lands.
This project aims to design an environmentally sustainable, healthy, and regenerative modular housing system that highlights current and proposed local forest products for a biogenic construction assembly. The system is based around the proposed use of eastern white pine CLT (Cross-Laminated-Timber) for panelized construction, and designed intentionally as a system for modular addition/expansion to optimize affordability and longevity of the housing stock. Finally, the system will be analyzed and compared with a representative conventional modular house, as well as with a site-built, typical lightwood- frame-constructed version of itself. The study demonstrates that a CLT modular system greatly reduces the carbon footprint of new home construction in the rural northeast, produces healthier and thermally-efficient interior living environments, and promotes economic opportunity throughout forest sector supply chains and local communities. This study would support the development of locally manufactured CLT production, permittable by local authorities for use in low-density residential applications
Reusing Mass Timber: An Investigation of the Opportunities and Challenges
193 pagesMass timber is becoming more relevant in North America as well as the global design industry. It’s growth in use is due to its sustainability, suitability for prefabrication, and ease of construction. As mass timber is used more and more in new construction, the question of what it means to be “sustainable” is being examined more closely. Issues are being raised about the forest management practices, where the timber is sourced, and what counts as biogenic carbon that is sequestered in mass timber. But there is also the question of the end-of-life scenarios for mass timber that is still largely undetermined. With the average life span of a commercial and multifamily building being approximately 50 years and 50-100 years for a single-family home, little has been studied about the possibilities for reusing mass timber from existing structures. Currently, in some cases, mass timber products cannot be recycled or turned into biomass. This absence of recyclable options is due to the adhesives used in the material and hardware, such as screws, that can break and leave remnants of the hardware that could damage the CNC blade. Instead, the panels and offcuts from production are sent to landfills where they breakdown and release CO2 and methane gases into the atmosphere. The question of how to reuse mass timber products is asked when addressing sustainability and life-cycle assessment. Life-cycle assessment address the life of the product from harvesting, to manufacturing, to building life, and potentially end-of-life reuse to reduce its carbon footprint. Through reuse, mass timber panels can be up cycled (reprocessing the product to have a new use as primary structure) and/or down cycled (the product is used as a secondary structural system or furniture) to continue the life cycle of the product and reduce its carbon impact by continuing benefits of carbon sequestration
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
