Desiring the east: a comparative study of Middle English romance and modern popular sheikh romance
This thesis comparatively examines a selection of twenty-first century sheikh romances and Middle English romances from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries that imagine an erotic relationship occurring between east and west. They do so against a background of conflict, articulated in military confrontation and binary religious and ethnic division. The thesis explores the strategies used to facilitate the cross-cultural relationship across such a gulf of difference and considers what a comparison of medieval and modern romance can reveal about attitudes towards otherness in popular romance.
In Chapter 1, I analyse the construction of the east in each genre, investigating how the homogenisation of the romance east in sheikh romance distances it from the geopolitical reality of those parts of the Middle East seen, by the west, to be "other". Chapter 2 examines the articulation of gender identity and the ways in which these romances subvert and reassert binary gender difference to uphold normative heterosexual relations. Chapter 3 considers how ethnic and religious difference is nuanced, in particular through the use of fabric, breaking down the disjunction between east and west. Chapter 4 investigates the way ethnicity, religion and gender affect hierarchies of power in the abduction motif, enabling undesirable aspects of the east to be recast.
The key finding of this thesis is that both romance genres facilitate the cross-cultural erotic relationship by rewriting apparently binary differences of religion and ethnicity to create sameness. While the east is figured differently in Middle English and modern sheikh romance, the strategies they use to facilitate the cross-cultural erotic relationship are similar. The thesis concludes that the constancy of certain attitudes towards the east in both medieval and modern romance reveals a persistence of conservative values in representations of the east in romance

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome, its continuous severity score, and correlated cardiovascular risk among postmenopausal women of a rural area of Bangladesh
Background: Our primary objec ve was to es mate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among postmenopausal women (PMW) and evaluate the correla on of its severity score with the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In addi on, we compared the distribu on of CVD risk and risk factors among PMW with or without MetS. Methods: We recruited 265 PMW of 40-70 years of age from February to December 2016 who had no CVD. The MetS was defined according to modified Adult Treatment Panel III criteria and MetS severity score was constructed using a standardized Z score. CVD risk was assessed using the lab-based Globorisk score. Results: About 35.1% of the PMW had MetS. The propor on of central obesity, generalized obesity, physical inac vity, diabetes, and hypertension were higher among those with MetS than those without. A highly significant CVD risk score difference (P<0.001) was observed between the subjects with or without MetS. Similarly, CVD risk showed a significant linear correla on (P<0.001) with the MetS severity score, which was adjusted for several confounders. Conclusion: One-third of PMW in a selected rural area of Bangladesh had MetS and its severity score showed a significant correla on with CVD risk. A large-scale study is warranted to confirm the current findings with more precision. © 2023, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. All rights reserved
National clinical practice guidelines for food allergy and anaphylaxis: an international assessment
Background: clinical practice guidelines are important tools to promote evidence-based clinical care, but not all countries have the capacity or infrastructure to develop these in-house. The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology has recently developed guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis and management of food allergy and the management of anaphylaxis. In order to inform dissemination, adaptation and implementation plans, we sought to identify countries that have/do not have national guidelines for food allergy and anaphylaxis. Methods: two reviewers independently searched PubMed to identify countries with guidelines for food allergy and/or anaphylaxis from the inception of this database to December 2016. This was supplemented with a search of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's National Guideline Clearinghouse in order to identify any additional guidelines that may not have been reported in the peer-reviewed literature. Data were descriptively and narratively synthesized. Results: overall, 5/193 (3%) of countries had at least one guideline for food allergy or anaphylaxis. We found that one (1%) country had a national guideline for the prevention of food allergy, three (2%) countries had a guideline for the diagnosis of food allergy and three (2%) countries had a guideline for the management of food allergy. Three (2%) countries had an anaphylaxis guideline. Conclusions: this study concludes that the overwhelming majority of countries do not have any national clinical practice guidelines for food allergy or anaphylaxis
The Benefits of Being Economics Professor A (and not Z)
Alphabetic name ordering on multi-authored academic papers, which is the convention in the economics discipline and various other disciplines, is to the advantage of people whose last name initials are placed early in the alphabet. As it turns out, Professor A, who has been a first author more often than Professor Z, will have published more articles and experienced afaster growth rate over the course of her career as a result of reputation and visibility. Moreover, authors know that name ordering matters and indeed take ordering seriously: Several characteristics of an author group composition determine the decision to deviate from the default alphabetic name order to a significant extent.performance measurement, incentives, economists, name ordering
Lan(n+1)+xNin(n+5)+ySi(n+1)(n+2)–z : A Symmetric Mirror Homologous Series in the La-Ni-Si System
A homologous series La n(n+1)+x Ni n(n+5)+y Si(n+1)(n+2)-z has beenobserved inthe La-Ni-Si representing a symmetric Ni-rich mirrorto the La(n+1)(n+2)Ni n(n-1)+2Si n(n+1). A series of fourhomologous silicides have been discovered duringsystematic explorations in the central part of the La-Ni-Sisystem at 1000 & DEG;C. All compounds La12.5Ni28.0Si18.3 (n = 3; a = 28.8686(8), c = 4.0737(2) & ANGS;, Z = 3), La22.1Ni39.0Si27.8 (n = 4; a = 20.9340(6), c = 4.1245(2) & ANGS;, Z = 1), La32.9Ni49.8Si39.3 (n = 5; a = 24.946(1), c = 4.1471(5) & ANGS;, Z = 1), and La44.8Ni66.1Si53.4 (n =6; a = 28.995(5), c = 4.158(1) & ANGS;, Z = 1) crystallize in the hexagonal space group P6(3)/m and can be generalizedaccording to La n(n+1)+x Ni n(n+5)+y Si(n+1)(n+2)-z with n = 3-6. Their crystalstructures are based on AlB2-type building blocks, fusedLa-centered Ni6Si6 hexagonal prisms, yieldinglarger oligomeric equilateral domains with the edge size equal to n. The domains extend along the c axisand show checkered ordering of the cationic and anionic parts, whileall their atoms are located on mirror planes. La n(n+1)+x Ni n(n+5)+y Si(n+1)(n+2)-z can beconsidered as a mirror series to the La-rich La(n+1)(n+2)Ni n(n-1)+2Si n(n+1), where an exchange of the formal cationic and anionic sites,i.e., La and Si, occurs. The La-Ni-Si system is thefirst system where two such analogous series have been observed
Final word on Jersey Dutch
In this article, William Z. Shetter compares and contrasts the dialects that developed between different Dutch colonies in the New World. He explores in-depth the nuances of Jersey Dutch, and provides theories to explain how Dutch and colonial languages blended. The article is reprinted from American Speech, December 1958, Volum XXXIII, No. 4
Krožna oskrbovalna veriga in vplivi na trajnost, vključujoč krepitev kompetenc na področju logistike
This thesis focuses on creating a framework for evaluating the influence of closed-loop on supply chain performance in the case of petrochemical industry in the Egyptian context, with a focus to test the influence of sustainability on the supply chain performance, to investigate the function of sustainability as a mediator between reverse logistics and supply chain performance, and evaluate the impact of closed-loop supply chains (environmental legislation, customer awareness and economic motivations) on sustainable development. The gathering of primary data helped the current study\u27s goals get accomplished. Surveys are used to gather data to estimate how reverse logistics impacts the effectiveness of the supply chain. The employees of supply chain companies in Egypt received the surveys from the researcher. The study\u27s findings indicate a strong link between sustainability and reverse logistics. Additionally, there is a marginally significant correlation between supply chain performance and sustainability. The outcomes also showed that the closed-loop supply chain has little influence on supply chain efficiency and sustainability. Furthermore, there is a marginally significant association between supply chain effectiveness and reverse logistics. The results also revealed that sustainability has a function in supply chain performance and reverse logistics.
Consumers’ Behaviour of Poles Using Polish-Egyptian Travel Agencies in Sharm el Sheikh
Główny cel przyjazdu do Egiptu to: turystyka wypoczynkowa (piękne plaże), kursy nurkowania, snorkeling, windsurfing, żeglarstwo, jachting, wędkarstwo, golf oraz turystyka poznawcza. Egypt is more and more popular with Polish tourist. The extremely affordable price of the events
as compared to offers of other coastal states favours the trips. One of the reasons is the fact that Egypt constitutes
one of the so-called “dollar destinations”. This means that tour operators organizing events in this
country settle in the US dollars. In the situation when the US dollar exchange rate is lower in relation to
the euro and the Polish zloty is strong in relation to both these currencies, trips to Egypt have very attractive
prices. The main purpose of tourists coming to Egypt is recreational tourism (beautiful beaches), diving
courses, snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing, yachting, fishing, golf and cultural tourism. Intensity of the interest
and financial capabilities of the potential clients have resulted in the formation of local travel agencies that
deal with satisfying new needs. This happened through creating offers regarding tourism and recreation. The
annual significant number of the Polish tourists coming to Egypt who want to get to know and visit it has contributed
to the fact that Polish-Egyptian travel agencies that offer local optional trips to tourists are opened in
the Egyptian resorts. The paper discusses the activity of the largest Polish-Egyptian travel agencies in Sharm el Sheikh, such as E Sharm.Pl, Sunny Sharm, PolSharm, Sunny Shore or Egypt Tours. The author presents the
results of the research that was conducted in August 2015 in Sharm el Sheikh among the Polish tourists who
had used the services provided by the local travel agencies. The data determining which form of tourism and
recreation the respondents in Egypt prefer, what made them use the services of the specific travel agency,
how they got to know about its existence, how many optional trips they participated in, what they were driven
by while choosing the local travel agency and how much money they spent in the Polish-Egyptian travel
agencies providing services in Sharm el Sheikh. The analysis of the optional trips that are most frequently
chosen by the Polish students and assessment of their organization is also provided
Peganum harmala L.'s anti-growth effect on a breast cancer cell line
This research was done to evaluate the induction of apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line by Peganum harmala's extract, in which a significant amount of β-carbolines is included. The apoptosis incidence was assessed through Annexin-V-Flous kit. The expressions of genes through which intrinsic apoptosis pathway are involved, Bax, Bcl-2, Bid, and Puma, over the genes the expressions of which are linked to extrinsic apoptosis pathway, TRAIL, Caspase8, p21, and p53, were examined by RT-PCR and Real-time PCR. The results demonstrate that the extract decreases the growth rate of the cancer cell line through inducing apoptosis mechanism. As long as the expression of anti-apoptosis Bcl-2 gen reduced dramatically, an over-expression in Bax and Puma genes was monitored indicating activation of intrinsic apoptosis pathway. A notable over-expression observed with TRAIL and Caspase8 genes as well as Bid gene. The latter is an intermediate for both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis. © 2015 The Author
