Ravel's Sheherazade and Fin-de-siecle orientalism
Sheherazade (Trois poems de Tristan Klingsor), composed in 1903, represents both Ravel's first major vocal work and his earliest major orchestral composition. Despite the work's important position in the composer's oeuvre, it has received little academic attention. No monograph, dissertation, or article on Sheherazade has yet appeared. The primary objective of this study is to make this much needed contribution to Ravel scholarship. Of the piece's salient features, the most immediately striking is its exoticism; every phrase is given an Oriental tint. Using the work of cultural critic Edward Said as a theoretical framework, I contextualize Sheherazade's exoticism by situating the piece within the broad set of interrelated cultural practices Said calls Orientalism. I show that the work is affiliated, structurally and rhetorically, with particular Orientalist texts (both musical and non-musical), textual genres, traditions, and practices. By locating the piece historically among these texts and practices, and by using them as a referential network to read it hermeneutically, I demonstrate that rich cultural, political, and, for Ravel, personal meaning can be read into Sheherazade
Eva Luna e Sheherazade: tecelãs do destino
Based on studies about intertextuality and women literature, this article proposes a comparative analysis between the characters Eva Luna, from the homonym book of Isabel Allende, and Sheherazade, from One thousand and one nights. Verifying the way how they build their narratives to save their lives and determine their fates, this work will show how Allende’s novel recovers the Arabian text in a new context.

OPTIMIZATION OF THE GENETIC ALGORITHM IN THE SHEHERAZADE WARGAMING SIMULATOR
Stability and Support Operations (SASO) continue to play an important role in modern military exercises. The Sheherazade simulation system was designed to facilitate SASO-type mission planning exercises by rapidly generating and evaluating hundreds of thousands of alternative courses-of-action (COAs). The system is comprised of a coevolution engine that employs a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to generate the COAs for each side in a multi-sided conflict and a wargamer that models various subjective factors such as regional attitudes and faction animosities to evaluate their effectiveness. This dissertation extends earlier work on Sheherazade, in the following ways: 1) The GA and coevolution framework have been parallelized for improved performance on current multi-core platforms 2) the effects of various algorithm parameters, both general and specific to Sheherazade, were analyzed 3) alternative search techniques reflecting recent developments in the field have been evaluated for their capacity to improve the quality of the results
