    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Integrated modelling strategy for FRP-based confinement imposed to RC columns: from undamaged to post-fire damage

    Tese de doutoramento em Engenharia CivilThe determination of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) retrofit strategy-induced improvements in seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) elements is an up-to-date concern, particularly if post-fire (pre-damaged) RC elements with an FRP partial confinement configuration are to be considered. Post-fire assessment revealed that, depending on the fire intensity imposed on these structural elements, substantial material deteriorations occur during fire exposure resulting in detrimental effects on the performance of RC structures at their serviceability and ultimate limit state conditions. Considering the relatively high cost of demolition and reconstruction alternatives, the usage of a post-fire strengthening solution for assuring the required performance and strength capacity level of a fire-damaged concrete structure can be justified. The present work intends to contribute to the increase of knowledge on FRP confinement-induced improvements in terms of the axial and dilation responses of fully/partially FRP-confined heated/unheated circular/non-circular concrete/RC columns. To evaluate the effectiveness of FRP full/partial confinement arrangement on axial and dilation behavior of non-seismically designed and detailed RC columns with pre-existing thermal-induced damages, the application of confinement models is of significant interest. For this purpose, a series of analysis- and design-oriented models (AOM and DOM) is proposed for simulating the substantial influences of partially-imposed confinement, cross-section shape, size effect, FRP/steel dual confinement, and pre-existing thermal damages, on the column’ performance during axial compressive loading. For achieving the highest level of predictive performance through non-linear regression technique, large databases were collected from existing experimental studies available in the literature, which were used to reliably calibrate key components of these models. This information was also used to demonstrate the high predictive capacity of the developed models, as well as their better performance compared to existing models.A determinação dos benefícios proporcionados pela utilização de materiais de matriz polimérica reforçados com fibras (FRP) no reforço sísmico de estruturas de betão armado (BA) é um tema atual, principalmente se estas tiverem sido sujeitas a ação de fogo. A inspeção de estruturas de betão que foram sujeitas a incêndio revelam que, dependendo da intensidade e tempo de atuação da temperatura, o betão apresenta danos significativos em termos da sua rigidez e resistência. Tal afeta negativamente o funcionamento dessas estruturas, quer para estados limite de serviço como últimos. Considerando os elevados custos económicos e ambientais da demolição e reconstrução de edifícios em BA nestas condições, a opção por soluções de reabilitação e reforço devem ser perseguidas. O presente trabalho pretende contribuir para aumentar o conhecimento sobre os benefícios proporcionados pelo confinamento de pilares de BA com FRP, principalmente quando estes tenham sido submetidos a temperaturas representativas da ação de fogo. Para tal foram desenvolvidos modelos analíticos capazes de simular, de forma integrada e unificadora, o comportamento de pilares de betão de seção circular, quadrada ou retangular, com arranjos de confinamento em FRP contínuo ou discreto, tendo o betão sido, ou não, afetado por temperaturas elevadas. Foram desenvolvidos fundamentalmente duas classes de modelos: modelos orientados para a análise, e modelos orientados para o projeto. Os modelos foram desenvolvidos com base numa profunda análise e interpretação do comportamento registado em resultados experimentais, possíveis de ser acedidos por publicações do domínio público. Essa interpretação inclui a interação entre a deformação multidimensional do betão e a pressão de confinamento do FRP, dependente de diversos parâmetros materiais e geométricos de ambos os materiais e da escala do próprio elemento a confinar. Assim, os modelos tiveram em conta a classe de resistência do betão, a rigidez do FRP, o seu arranjo geométrico, a secção tipo do pilar a confinar, a presença de cintas metálicas, dano por ação de temperatura elevadas, etc. Os parâmetros destes modelos foram calibrados por intermédio de resultados experimentais coletados numa base de dados com toda a informação possível de encontrar nesta área do domínio público.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
