Women: Perspectives and Issues in Shashi Deshpande's A Matter of TIME and Small Remedies
A noteworthy novelist and author of many children books, Shashi Deshpande, has acquired a unique place in Indian writing in English. Her novels are written in simple and lucid language. All of them deal with simple people belonging to small strata of society in general as well as predicament of women in particular in the society and family. Her women characters seem to be alive and breathing in the surrounding nearby each of us as we see in our daily life. They are ordinary women who struggle for their own identity, self-realization and emancipation. Since Indian society is adhered to patriarchal set up, as a result the traditional women in Shashi Deshpande's novels face the problem of suppression, oppression, injustice, exploitation and marginalization. Even if they are educated, they are the victims of several kinds of evils. Shashi Deshpande is much sieved to think the condition of women and fought for the cause of women. In the time of Shashi Deshpande men thought women as child-bearing machine. She tries her best to make aware her women their rights and fills them with courage in order they may demand their rights and make a niche in the society

Thematic Study in Shashi Deshpande’s Novels
Shashi Deshpande is an eminent contemporary women writer in Indian writing in English. Her protagonists find themselves entrapped in the roles assigned to them by society, but achieve self‑identity and independence within the confines of their marriage. The present study, based on the selected novels of Shashi Deshpande deals with the complexities of man woman relationship especially in the context of marriage, the trauma of disturbed adolescence with reference to four novels of Shashi Deshpande namely That Dark Holds No Terrors (1980), The Binding Vine (2002), That Long Silence (1989), A Matter Of Time (2001), Roots and Shadows (1983), Small Remedies, Penguin India (2000), Moving On, Penguin Books India (2004). She depicts what happen to men and women in and after marriage, what they have been, what they have become and what is in store for them. The changes in status of men and women after marriage and the changing nature of marital relationships are presented in these four novels. Focusing on the marital relation she seeks to expose the tradition by which a woman is trained to play her subservient role in the family. Shashi Deshpande’s novels also show how carefully she expresses the frustration and disappointment of women which they experience in their marital relationship. It suggests concerted efforts by men and women towards creating a mature and balanced gender relationship
