Arylamine N-acetyltransferase gene polymorphisms: markers for atopic asthma, serum IgE and blood eosinophil counts
Introduction: Polymorphisms in N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2), present on chromosome 8p22, are responsible for the N-acetylation variants, which segregate human populations into rapid, intermediate and slow acetylators and influence the susceptibility towards atopic disorders. We have undertaken a study of the North Indian population to screen for various NAT2 polymorphisms and to investigate their association with atopic asthma and related phenotypes. Methods: First, to establish linkage of the 8p22 region with asthma, 158 families were recruited from North India. Next, a total of 219 unrelated atopic asthmatics and 210 unrelated healthy controls were recruited for case-control disease association studies. Results: A suggestive linkage was observed with microsatellite marker D8S549, 2.6 MB upstream of NAT2. By sequencing the DNA of 40 individuals, the T111C, G191A, A434C and C759T single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in NAT2 were found to be nonpolymorphic in our population and a pattern of strong linkage disequilibrium was observed among the T341C, C481T and A803G polymorphisms. Thus, a total of 429 individuals were genotyped for the C481T and unlinked C282T polymorphisms. The C481T polymorphism was found to be significantly associated with asthma in our case-control studies at the genotype level (Armitage p = 0.00027). C481T also showed a marginal association with serum total IgE (TsIgE) (p = 0.022). Furthermore, percent blood eosinophil counts were found to be significantly higher in patients carrying the 481T allele (p = 0.0037). Significant association was also detected with respect to the C282T polymorphism and TsIgE (p = 0.008). Moreover, C_T was found to be an important risk (p = 0.001), while C_C was a major protective haplotype (p = 0.0005). The associations remained significant after Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. Conclusion: In summary, the genetic variants of the NAT2 gene do not seem to affect asthma alone, but act as modulators of asthma-related traits, such as serum IgE and blood eosinophil counts, and therefore could serve as genetic markers
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Spectral mass gauging of unsettled liquid with acoustic waves
Propellant mass gauging is one of the key technologies required to enable the next step in NASA's space exploration program. At present, there is no reliable method to accurately measure the amount of unsettled liquid propellant in a large-scale propellant tank in micro- or zero gravity. Recently we proposed a new approach to use sound waves to probe the resonance frequencies of the two-phase liquid-gas mixture and take advantage of the mathematical properties of the high frequency spectral asymptotics to determine the volume fraction of the tank filled with liquid. We report the current progress in exploring the feasibility of this approach in the case of large propellant tanks, both experimental and theoretical. Excitation and detection procedures using solenoids for excitation and both hydrophones and accelerometers for detection have been developed. A 3% uncertainty for mass-gauging was demonstrated for a 200-liter tank partially filled with liquid for various unsettled configurations, such as tilts and artificial ullages
Microwave spectroscopy of partially and fully deuterated HCl dihydrate clusters
A detailed understanding of water’s remarkable ability to solvate small molecules is a central theme in chemistry. In this work, we have identified 12 new partially and fully deuterated isotopologues of the hydrochloric acid dihydrate cluster, (H2O)2 · HCl, by chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. We also performed high-level ab initio calculations relevant to the structure and dynamics of the cluster. The observation of singly substituted isotopologues at each unique hydrogen position enables a more detailed experimental characterization of the geometry than was possible previously. In addition, an analysis of splittings in the spectrum that are caused by population of more than one vibration-tunneling level enables a detailed characterization of hydrogen bond-breaking bifurcation tunneling motions that occur in the complex. Not only do our results confirm theoretical predictions about hydrogen atoms that are permuted by the tunneling motions—they also provide experimental evidence for concerted large-amplitude motions of other atoms. Finally, an analysis of the chlorine nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor suggests that the HCl bonding character might be influenced to a small extent by isotopic substitution of atoms involved in the Cl–H⋯O hydrogen bond due to zero-point vibrational effects.National Science Foundation 10.13039/10000000
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
