Coexistent squamous cell carcinoma and tuberculosis in the cervix: a rare case report

Tuberculosis may coexist with malignancy. But coexistence of tuberculosis and cancer in cervix is extremely rare. We present a rare case of coexistent squamous cell carcinona and tuberculosis of uterine cervix in a 35 years old lady who presented with chief complaints of white discharge and bleeding per vagina since 1 year. Histopathological findings of carcinomatous nests along with epithelioid granuloma, langhans type of giant cells and positive acid fast bacilli in the tissue section give authenticity to our diagnosis. Tuberculosis complicating malignancy may occur in regions with high prevalence of this disease. Hence, proper diagnosis of tuberculosis in a patient with cancer assumes importance as it may add to the surveillance of the patient........................................................Cite this article as:Sharma M, Ahmed S, Sharma J, Kataki AC, Sarma A. A low-order decomposition of turbulent channel flow via resolvent analysis and convex optimization

    No full text
We combine resolvent-mode decomposition with techniques from convex optimization to optimally approximate velocity spectra in a turbulent channel. The velocity is expressed as a weighted sum of resolvent modes that are dynamically significant, non-empirical, and scalable with Reynolds number. To optimally represent DNS data at friction Reynolds number 2003, we determine the weights of resolvent modes as the solution of a convex optimization problem. Using only 12 modes per wall-parallel wavenumber pair and temporal frequency, we obtain close agreement with DNS-spectra, reducing the wall-normal and temporal resolutions used in the simulation by three orders of magnitude

PURPOSE. The outer blood-retina barrier (BRB) separates the neural retina from the choroidal vasculature, which is responsible for approximately 80% of blood supplies in the eye. To determine the significance of outer BRB breakdown in diabetic retinopathy, the outer BRB-specific leakage of macromolecules in diabetic and ischemic rodents was investigated. METHODS. Diabetes and ischemia were induced in rodents by streptozotocin and oxygen-induced retinopathy, respectively. Diabetic and ischemic rodents were injected intravenously with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran. The outer BRB-specific leakage in diabetic and ischemic rodents was visualized by fluorescent microscopy. RESULTS. A microscopic imaging assay was developed to examine outer BRB breakdown. The outer BRB-specific leakage of fluorescent macromolecules was visualized in diabetic and ischemic rodents. Substantial leakages of macromolecules through the outer BRB in diabetic and ischemic rodents were detected with this assay. The number of severe outer BRB leakage sites is inversely proportional to the size of macromolecules. Significant depletion of occludin in the RPE of ischemic and diabetic rodents was also observed. CONCLUSIONS. For the first time, a microscopic imaging assay for directly visualizing macromolecules leaked through the outer BRB in rodents was developed. Using this assay, the authors demonstrated the significance of outer BRB breakdown in diabetes and ischemia, which will have implications to the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetic macular edema and other ocular diseases with outer BRB defects. The microscopic imaging assay established in this study will likely be very useful to the development of drugs for macular edema. (Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci. 2011;52:2160 -2164 DOI:10.1167/ iovs.10-6518 A unique feature about the human retina is the presence of two blood-retina barriers (BRBs), the inner and outer BRBs that are formed by tight junctions between adjacent endothelial or retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. While the inner BRB has been well studied due to its apparent relevance to diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity, little is known about the biology and pathophysiology of the outer BRB. The outer BRB separates the neural retina from a network of fenestrated vessels called choriocapillaris, which is the major blood supplier for the neural retina. The outer BRB plays many essential roles in the maintenance of normal physiological processes in the retina, through the transport of nutrients, water, and ions, and the removal of metabolic wastes (for review, see Ref. 1). A major outer BRB function is to participate in phagocytosis, a process that requires the daily renewal and removal of approximately 10% of lipid-rich photoreceptor outer segment discs. 2 Thus, the outer BRB plays a crucial role in the transport and recycle of fatty acids, 3 such as docosahexaenoic acid, which is a major component of photoreceptors and is important to retinal function. 7 These active transports are fueled by the Na ϩ -K ϩ -ATPase, located in the apical side of the RPE. 1 Finally, the outer BRB is also responsible for the removal of excessive water in the subretinal space to the choriocapillaris, which is driven by the transport of Cl Ϫ and K ϩ . 1,8 The diabetes-induced outer BRB dysfunction has been observed in humans and animals. 9 -12 Morphologic changes in the RPE can be readily detected in diabetic animals, 18 Despite these observations, the contribution of outer BRB dysfunction in diabetic retinopathy is almost neglected. A major hurdle for an insufficient progress in this area is the difficulty to measure the outer BRB-specific leakage experimentally, as existing methods cannot clearly distinguish the macromolecules leaked through the outer BRB and what appeared to be the overwhelming inner BRB-specific leakage under pathologic conditions. Consequently the extent and significance of outer BRBspecific leakage to the pathology of macular edema and other BRB diseases are unclear. Therefore, we recently developed a fluorescent microscopic imaging assay for visualizing and quantifying the outer BRB-specific leakage in diabetic and ischemic rodents after intravenous injection of fluorescent macromolecules. This report summarizes our study on the development of the methodology and visualization/detection of outer BRB breakdown in diabetic and ischemic rodents

Taiwan is a country with limited land resources and a dense population. Regarding national land, it should be effectively and comprehensively utilized, developed and maintained so that industries can have appropriately allocation and development under regional planning in the hope to improve national welfare. However, Taiyen Biotech Co., Ltd. (Taiwan Salt Industrial Corporation) has terminated solar salt work completely since 2002 and returned 5,243 hectares of land to National Property Administration. The re-development and use of land has remained under review consideration. The solar salt economic activities that once supported tens of thousand of people have ground to a halt due to the termination of solar salt work, leaving salt fields unattended. And salt villages have become desolate. It is a shame to see the unattended salt fields soak in sea water and turn into marshes. The author tries to study from the viewpoint of National Comprehensive Development Plan and its relation with industrial development and present three industrial cluster-based economy science park development projects. They can provide choices for the government to make effective management guidelines in National Comprehensive Development Plan. By re-invigorating regional industrial economy in the country, we may expect to build new prosperous science and technology townships. Keywords: development, National Comprehensive Development Plan, industrial cluster-based economy, project, regional economy

ABSTRACT Due to the global economic depression, enterprise bankruptcy and reorganization cases are increasing tremendously during the recent years. However, the current laws and regulations respecting reorganization and bankruptcy are not comprehensive enough to help the enterprises and protect the rights and interests of creditors and investors. It is a common place that the court could not render decision immediately and precisely while the enterprises file for reorganization when encountering financial problems, due to lack of sufficient information or clear provisions of laws. Therefore, some enterprises that were worthy to give assistance and should have had a chance to regenerate their business, had fallen into the destiny of bankruptcy. On the contrary, some other enterprises use the Bankruptcy Law as their protector to have their cunning maneuver happened all the time. By the comparison of the R.O.C. and America bankrupt systems, the author has tried to find out how to appraise the enterprise while a financial crisis occurs. It is the author's hope that this thesis could provide the investors with an accurate and effective assessment principle to assist the enterprises out of the predicament, and furnish the government a helpful reference for amending the bankruptcy law. This thesis includes the comparison of the differences between R.O.C. and American bankrupt systems, some certain grave Chinese and American enterprises bankruptcy and reorganization cases that happened in the recent years, as well as the analyses of the relevant provisions of Company Law, Bankrupt Law, Law Governing Merger of Financial Institutions, Financial Holding Company Law, and Merger and Acquisition Law. The objects of all these analyses and comparison are to interpret the insufficiency and implicit points of current laws and regulations. This thesis has also applied and analyzed some theories about corporate governance. This research does not cover the procedures of liquidation and personal bankruptcy
