Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Sleep in Adults with Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder of the Predominantly Inattentive and Combined Subtypes

Subjective and objective data on correlates of sleep were collected from adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to determine whether ADHD of the Predominantly Inattentive (ADHD-I) and Combined (ADHD-C) subtypes differ with respect to the nature, prevalence, and impact of sleep disturbances on the core symptoms of ADHD. Subjective data were collected from 45 ADHD-I (mean 40 ± 11 years, 24% female) and 81 ADHD-C (mean 37 ± 10 years, 27% female) adults. A high proportion of ADHD subjects had complaints of excessive daytime sleepiness, poor sleep quality and fatigue. Sleep quality and fatigue were worse for ADHD-I than for ADHD-C subjects. The interrelationships between daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, and fatigue also differed between ADHD subtypes, suggesting differences in the interplay of sleep and wakefulness in ADHD-I and ADHD-C. The idea that the interplay of sleep and wakefulness differs in ADHD subtypes was further supported by findings associated with objective measures of sleep in 27 ADHD-I (mean 39 ± 12 years, 33% females) and 41 ADHD-C (mean 37 ± 9 years, 20% females) adults. Specifically, dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) time was found to be associated with inattention in ADHD-I, and with hyperactivity/impulsivity in ADHD-C. Regarding polysomnography (PSG) measures of sleep, symptoms of inattention were found to be associated with respiratory-event related arousals (RERA) in ADHD-I, and symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity were found to be associated with correlates of REM sleep in ADHD-C. These findings suggest a differential role of circadian cycles and sleep in the neuromodulation of the core symptoms of ADHD in ADHD subtypes.Taken together, the findings suggest that ADHD subtype differences extend to the realm of sleep. Importantly, subtype differences lie, not in measures of sleep per se, but rather in the interrelationships between measures of sleep and the core symptoms of ADHD, suggesting ADHD-subtype differences in the interplay of sleep and wakefulness.Ph.D

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Children and Adolescents across the Weight Spectrum

A relationship between overweight and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) has been suggested in the adult population, and to a limited extent in the pediatric population. Daytime sleepiness can interfere with various components of daytime function. In light of the increase in the rates of pediatric overweight and obesity, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between weight and EDS in a pediatric population. Using a retrospective approach, data collected in a pediatric sleep clinic was analyzed. Objective measures of EDS were correlated with age, gender, body mass index percentile, and overnight sleep test recording variables. In males and in all children under the age of 13 years old, EDS was more common in those weighing above the normal range, EDS was present particularly during mid-morning hours. Additionally, weight above the normal range correlated with evidence of EDS after adjusting for measures of sleep pathologies.MAS

Investigating Chronotherapeutic Interventions for the Treatment of Depression

Major depressive disorder is one of the most frequently diagnosed psychiatric disorders, and has widespread negative impacts on both the individual and on society. Current standard treatment options for depression have significant limitations, including side effects, contraindications, and barriers to accessing care. Chronotherapies, which make use of sleep and circadian rhythms, provide a promising alternative treatment route for depression. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), bright light therapy (BLT), and combined chronotherapies used to treat depression were systematically reviewed. Both CBT-I and BLT have evidence to support their efficacy in treating depression; combined therapy including sleep deprivation, BLT and/or sleep phase advance may also be effective. We propose a novel combined chronotherapeutic treatment, consisting of telehealth CBT-I and BLT, which we believe would be efficacious, accessible, and which would help to relieve the considerable burden of depression in Canada.M.Sc
