Overall view from North Hanover St., looking north; City of Glasgow College was created from the 2009 merger of three Glasgow colleges, and currently uses the building. At the start of the 1960s the Glasgow Corporation commissioned a new home for the College of Building at North Hanover Street. The new building was one of the first commercial high rise structures in Glasgow and took four years to build. It was officially opened in 1964 by Harold Wilson, who later went on to become UK Prime Minister. By Wylie, Shanks & Underwood, 1958-1964; with podium/millennium block by Wylie, Shanks & Partners 1969. The building is a 13-storey with rooftop plant, 24-bay, hexagonal-plan, flat-roofed, horizontally-proportioned tower block with Le Corbusier style elements of pilotis, sculptural rooftop gymnasium and plant. A historical listed building since 2002. Source: Urban Glasgow Collection [website]; http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/ (accessed 7/7/2012

Overview & Shownotes There’s perhaps no better example of an obedient person than a soldier. And yet, soldiers often thoughtfully disobey direct orders, and in some cases, are legally obligated to disobey the rules. Pauline Shanks Kaurin, who is a philosopher and professor of military ethics at the U.S. Naval War College joins us to explore the ethics of obedience. She’s discussing her book On Obedience: Contrasting Philosophies for the Military, Citizenry, and Community. For the episode transcript, download a copy or read it below. Data are a combination of field-collected data on barnacle populations at stations from San Diego, California to La Push, Washington. Stations names are in column A and they were cataloged (column B) as either rocky shores (1, continuous rocks intertidal for at least 50 m) or rocks within beaches (2, rocky shore <50 m). The latitude and longitude (columns D and E) are precise locations using the ‘place’ tool in Google Earth. Columns F and G are alongshore wind stress (a proxy for upwelling/downwelling) and average wave height calculated for each station latitude. See Shanks et al (in press) for descriptions of the methods. Daily solar radiation (column H) is from the National Solar Radiation Data Base (http://rredc.nrel.gov/solar/old_data/nsrdb/). Average surfzone width (Column I) was determined from Google Earth images (See Shanks et al, in press for methods). Intertidal width and beach angle (columns J and K) were measured in the field at the time the stations were sampled and methods are described in Shanks et al. (in press). Barnacle data (columns L-W) are from photographs taken in the field at each sample site. ImageJ was used to analyze the photographs and methods are describe in Shanks et al. (in press)

Implicit learning: What does it all mean - Response

In the original target article (Shanks & St. John 1994), one of our principal conclusions was that there is almost no evidence that learning can occur outside awareness. The continuing commentaries raise some interesting questions, especially about the definition of learning, but do not lead us to abandon our conclusion
