System Xc(-) inhibition blocks bone marrow-multiple myeloma exosomal crosstalk, thereby countering bortezomib resistance
Multiple myeloma (MM) cells derive proliferative signals from the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment via exosomal crosstalk. Therapeutic strategies targeting this crosstalk are still lacking. Bortezomib resistance in MM cells is linked to elevated expression of xCT (the subunit of system Xc(-) ). Extracellular glutamate released by system Xc(-) can bind to glutamate metabotropic receptor (GRM) 3, thereby upregulating Rab27-dependent vesicular trafficking. Since Rab27 is also involved in exosome biogenesis, we aimed to investigate the role of system Xc(-) in exosomal communication between BM stromal cells (BMSCs) and MM cells. We observed that expression of xCT and GRMs was increased after bortezomib treatment in both BMSCs and MM cells. Secretion of glutamate and exosomes was simultaneously enhanced which could be countered by inhibition of system Xc(-) or GRMs. Moreover, glutamate supplementation increased exosome secretion by increasing expression of Alix, TSG101, Rab27a/b and VAMP7. Importantly, the system Xc? inhibitor sulfasalazine reduced BMSC-induced resistance to bortezomib in MM cells in vitro and enhanced its anti-MM effects in vivo. These findings suggest that system Xc? plays an important role within the BM and could be a potential target in MM

IC XC NI KA. The apotropaic Function of the victorious Cross
In this article the author attempts to bring up to date the research undertaken by the late Anatole Frolow and the late Gordana Babic on the place of the formula IC XC NI ΚΑ in Byzantine art. He provides an extended repertory of representations of this formula in different media, together with other legends or acronyms which may replace or supplement it. He rejects its early association with Eucharistie practice and Iconoclast propaganda. In tracing the development of its use, he observes that its early exploitation as an affirmation of victory, usually but not necessarily imperial, gave way to apotropaic practices. Although some of the acronyms which increasingly accompanied the formula in later Byzantine art are hard to decode, the author does not consider that they were intended regularly to be arcane.REB 55 1997 France p. 193-220

Numeric Simulation for the Seabed Deformation in the Process of Gas Hydrate Dissociated by Depressurization
When the gas hydrates dissociate, the mechanical properties of sediments will change, which may cause the deformation of the seabed. Such incidence will directly affect the stability of the undersea device. Under the consideration of seepage-stress coupling, this paper analyzed the deformation of seabed using finite element method. Duncan Chang's E-B constitutive model code was written, the impact of stress on the elastic constants was considered in this model. It was implemented in ABAQUS and used to simulating the nonlinear deformation of sediments. The results show that vertical effective stress of soil around the well increase significantly when gas hydrates are exploited by depressurization. The deformation of seabed increases nonlinearly with the increasing of the decomposition radius of hydrate. The maximum settlement reaches 9 m and the maximum horizontal displacement reaches 4 m. The results provide guidance on the submarine construction in the process of gas production from hydrates
Suppression of Hopf bifurcation in metal cutting by extrusion machining
Hopf bifurcation is a common phenomenon during the metal cutting process which results in poor surface finish of the workpiece and inhomogeneous grain structure in materials. Therefore understanding and controlling Hopf bifurcation in metal cutting are necessary. In this work the systematic low-speed extrusion machining experiments were conducted to suppress Hopf bifurcation phenomenon. It is found that the suppression of Hopf bifurcation is achieved with the increasing constraint extrusion degree. In order to reveal the mechanism of the suppression of Hopf bifurcation a new nonlinear dynamic model for extrusion machining is developed where the convection the diffusion the extrusion of constraint the thermal-softening deformation and the fracture-type damage are included. The theoretical predictions are in agreement with the experimental results; therefore the present theoretical model is effective to characterize the suppression of Hopf bifurcation in metal cutting. Based on the numerical calculation of the theoretical model the mechanisms underlying in extrusion machining are further revealed: Fracture-type deformation is more important than the thermal-softening-type deformation in low-speed extrusion machining; however the thermal-softening-type deformation is the primary deformation mode for high-speed extrusion machining

Enhancing surface integrity by high-speed extrusion machining
High-speed machining (HSM) is an advanced machining technology to form components. However the poor surface integrity tends to appear due to chip flow instability in HSM. It is found that the surface integrity results from the competition of shear deformation instability between in primary shear zone (PSZ) and in separating shear zone (SSZ). To improve the surface integrity of machined components the systematic high-speed extrusion machining (HSEM) experiments of magnesium alloy AZ31B with different constraint extrusion factors (CEFs) were carried out. The instability of shear deformation in PSZ is suppressed and the microwaves on machined surface disappear when CEF is equal to or larger than a certain value. The measurements of the machined surface show that an improvement of surface integrity is achieved if CEF exceeds a certain value. The theoretical model for HSEM was established to elucidate the critical CEF. The underlying physics of surface integrity in HSEM is further revealed. The experimental results verify the validity of the theoretical model
The narrow Theta(5) pentaquark as the first non-planar hadron with the diamond structure and negative parity
Using the picture of the flux tube model, we propose that the Theta(5) pentaquark as the first candidate of the three-dimensional non-planar hadron with the extremely stable diamond structure. The up and down quarks lie at the corners of the diamond while the anti-strange quark sits in the center. Various un-excited color flux tubes between the five quarks bind them into a stable and narrow color-singlet. Such a configuration allows the lowest state having the negative parity naturally. The decay of the Theta(5) pentaquark into the nucleon and kaon requires the breakup of the non-planar diamond configuration into two conventional planar hadrons, which involves some kind of structural phase transition as in the condensed matter physics. Hence the width of the Theta(+) pentaquark should be narrow despite that it lies above the kaon nucleon threshold.
