Effect of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on rat tissue oxylipin profiles

    No full text
There is much information on the effects of dietary lipids on tissue fatty acid composition, but little data on their bioactive lipid metabolites that mediate their effects on health and disease. Therefore diets differing in levels of linoleic (LA), α-linolenic (ALA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids were provided to male and female weanling rats for 6 weeks, and fatty acids and their oxygenated metabolites (oxylipins) were quantified in kidney, liver and serum. The findings reveal that although oxylipin profiles are generally similar to fatty acid profiles there are some notable exceptions: dietary LA can increase LA and arachidonic acid derived oxylipins without changing the precursor fatty acid level; dietary ALA can increase DHA oxylipins without changing DHA levels. Male tissues generally had higher levels of oxylipins than females, with a few exceptions (e.g. F-series prostaglandins). These findings have implications for dietary recommendations for LA and n-3 fatty acids.February 201

Government Policies, Economic Development, and Possible Environmental Effects at the Land-Water Interfaces of Guangdong Province, China

The coastal zone of South China is characterized by many features that are shared by other developing countries. It is a long-inhabited area with lengthy coastlines, dotted by several modern cities and a large number of fishing ports. Because of heavy population pressure, large demand for food, and the drive to develop modern industries, extensive embankment and reclamation schemes are undertaken, leading to many ecological feedbacks, such as heavy silting of the estuaries, pollution of coastal waters, and depletion of fishery resources nearby. The recent development of offshore oil and gas fields on the continental shelf of the South China Sea has further complicated the issue. On the one hand, one can anticipate rapid economic development along the coast; on the other, there is higher risk of environmental disasters. It is thus necessary to strengthen the present environmental surveillance system and the research effort on the environmental economics of the area.Community/Rural/Urban Development, Environmental Economics and Policy, Food Security and Poverty, International Development, Land Economics/Use, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy, Risk and Uncertainty,

Transplantation of ACE2- Mesenchymal stem cells improves the outcome of patients with covid-19 pneumonia

A coronavirus (HCoV-19) has caused the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Wuhan, China. Preventing and reversing the cytokine storm may be the key to save the patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to possess a comprehensive powerful immunomodulatory function. This study aims to investigate whether MSC transplantation improves the outcome of 7 enrolled patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in Beijing YouAn Hospital, China, from Jan 23, 2020 to Feb 16, 2020. The clinical outcomes, as well as changes of inflammatory and immune function levels and adverse effects of 7 enrolled patients were assessed for 14 days after MSC injection. MSCs could cure or significantly improve the functional outcomes of seven patients without observed adverse effects. The pulmonary function and symptoms of these seven patients were significantly improved in 2 days after MSC transplantation. Among them, two common and one severe patient were recovered and discharged in 10 days after treatment. After treatment, the peripheral lymphocytes were increased, the C-reactive protein decreased, and the overactivated cytokine-secreting immune cells CXCR3+CD4+ T cells, CXCR3+CD8+ T cells, and CXCR3+ NK cells disappeared in 3-6 days. In addition, a group of CD14+CD11c+CD11bmid regulatory DC cell population dramatically increased. Meanwhile, the level of TNF-α was significantly decreased, while IL-10 increased in MSC treatment group compared to the placebo control group. Furthermore, the gene expression profile showed MSCs were ACE2- and TMPRSS2- which indicated MSCs are free from COVID-19 infection. Thus, the intravenous transplantation of MSCs was safe and effective for treatment in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, especially for the patients in critically severe condition. © 2020 Leng Z et al. Extending the Constitution to Refugee-Parolees

    No full text
This comment examines the Constitutional rights of Indochinese refugee-parolees. The author begins by discussing the gap in rights between permanent residents and parolees. Permanent residents have entered the county and therefore receive certain rights. Parolees have not entered the country according to the Supreme Court\u27s decision in Leng May Ma v. Barber and therefore do not receive the same rights. The author argues that the gap between the rights of permanent residents and refugee-parolees must be narrowed. The author also argues that Leng May Ma is inapplicable to refugee-parolees who are not temporary visitors as a parolee is. The author also supports the argument with a description of the Congressional reaction to Leng May Ma and the Presidential rejection of Leng May Ma . The author calls on Congress or the courts to increase the current constitutional protections granted to Indochinese refugee-parolees

Development of GPR data analysis algorithms for predicting thin asphalt concrete overlay thickness and density

    No full text
Thin asphalt concrete (AC) overlay is a commonly used asphalt pavement maintenance strategy. The thickness and density of thin AC overlay are important to achieving proper pavement performance, which can be evaluated using ground-penetrating radar (GPR). The traditional methods for predicting pavement thickness and density relies on the accurate determination of electromagnetic (EM) signal reflection amplitude and time delay. Due to the limitation of GPR antenna bandwidth, the range resolution of the GPR signal is insufficient for thin pavement layer evaluation. To this end, the objective of this study is to develop signal processing techniques to increase the resolution of GPR signals, such that they can be applied to thin AC overlay evaluation. First, the generic GPR forward 2-D imaging scheme is discussed. Then two linear inversion techniques are proposed, including migration and sparse reconstruction. Both algorithms were validated on GPR signals reflected from buried pipes using finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation. Second, as a special case of the 2-D GPR imaging and linear inversion reconstruction, regularized deconvolution was applied to GPR signals reflected from thin AC overlays. Four types of regularization methods, including Tikhonov regularization and total variation regularization, were compared in terms of accuracy in estimating thin pavement layer thickness. The L-curve method was used to identify the appropriate regularization parameter. A subspace method—a multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm—was then utilized to increase the resolution of 3-D GPR signals. An extended common midpoint (XCMP) method was used to find the dielectric constant and the thickness of the thin AC overlay at a full-scale test section. The results show that the MUSIC algorithm is an effective approach for increasing the 3-D GPR signal range resolution when the XCMP method is applied on thin AC overlay. Furthermore, a non-linear inversion technique is proposed based on gradient descent. The proposed non-linear optimization algorithm was applied on real GPR data reflected from thin AC overlay and the thickness and density prediction results are accurate. Finally, a “modified reference scan” approach was developed to eliminate the effect of AC pavement surface moisture on GPR signals, such that the density of thin AC overlay can be monitored in real time during compaction.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'.
