Modelling of hydrological response to climate change in glacierized Central Asian catchments
The arid lowlands of Central Asia are highly dependent on the water supplied by the Tien Shan mountains. Snow and ice storage make large contributions to current runoff, particularly in summer. Two runoff models with different temporal resolutions, HBV-ETH and OEZ, were applied in three glaciated catchments of the Tien Shan mountains. Scenario runs were produced for a climate change caused by the doubling of atmospheric CO2 as predicted by the GISS global circulation model and assuming a 50% reduction of glaciation extent, as well as a complete loss of glaciation. Agreement of the results was best for runs based on 50% glaciation loss, where both models predict an increase in spring and summer runoff compared to current levels. Scenarios for complete loss of glaciation predict an increase in spring runoff levels, followed by lower runoff levels for July and August. Model predictions differ concerning the degree of reduction of late summer runoff. These scenarios are sensitive to model simulation of basin precipitation, as well as to reduction of glaciation extent

Morphological variations of Thymus L. in the vegetation belts of the Tien Shan mountains (Central Asia)
This study demonstrated the correlation between Thymus L. life-forms and Tien Shan mountain conditions in which different vegetation belts can be located at different altitudes depending on a particular ridge. We selected four species of Thymus that are widespread in Tien Shan mountains (Thymus diminutus, T. dmitrievae, T. karatavicus, and T. seravschanicus). Eco-morphological and phytocenotic approaches were used to study the life-forms and biomorphs within the genus Thymus in this region. The module structure and sympodial axis were analyzed according to the slope steepness and stone/herbaceous covering. Acrotonic and basitonic module branching types are characteristics of dwarf shrub and dwarf subshrub life-forms, respectively. The dwarf shrub develops in open spaces in the steppe and forest and the dwarf subshrub develops in different vegetation belts: from steppe to alpine. Thymus dwarf shrub and dwarf subshrub life-forms were characterized by an implicitly polycentric biomorph type (mature plant comprising several closely located growth centers). Thymus species in the Tien Shan mountains exhibited morphological variability. We propose that the branching of Thymus plants can be used as an indicator of a specific vegetation belt in the Tien Shan mountains and to predict the behavior of other species with similar morphology.The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Buddhism and Tourism at Pu-Tuo-Shan, China
This thesis is a study of pilgrimage and religious tourism in a Chinese Buddhist context, with a focus on both the host monastic community and visitors. The selected research site is Pu-Tuo-Shan, one of the Four Buddhist Sacred Mountains of China. While the Western literature on pilgrimage and religious tourism in the context of Buddhism in China remains thin and the many studies in Chinese have their research focus primarily on how to make use of religions to develop tourism and stimulate economic growth, this thesis aims to present the perceptions of Buddhist monks and nuns towards receiving visitors and tourism. The perceptions of religious hosts towards tourism development, and how they cope with the subsequent challenges created by tourism in China, are subjects that have not been studied. Additionally the thesis analyses data derived from a survey of 777 visitors to the island; the quantitative analysis sheds light on the profile of visitors. As elsewhere in the world, the religious sites of China attract not only believers, but also leisure and cultural tourists. The popularity of Pu-Tuo as a tourist destination inevitably disturbs the serenity of the monastic life of the approximately thousand monks and nuns who live there in their monasteries and nunneries. The first objective of this research is to generate a typology of visitors, and this was done through a quantitative approach grounded in post-positivism. The visitor survey was used to construct a visitor typology. The second objective of this thesis, to address how Buddhist monks and nuns perceive receiving visitors and tourism, and their ways to manage visitors’ behaviours, is achieved by adopting a qualitative approach grounded in an interpretive-constructivist paradigm. In-depth interviews with 25 monks and nuns were conducted to capture rich contextual data of their understandings. The two objectives of the thesis are related in the sense that the impact of the visitors on the monastic community and how the monks and nuns perceive their presence in Pu-Tuo depend on the visitors’ reasons for their visits, their behaviour and the strength of their belief in Buddhism. The findings provide insight into how the concepts of ‘pilgrimage’ and ‘pilgrim’ are understood from a Buddhist perspective. The attitudes of the Pu-Tuo Buddhist monks and nuns towards receiving visitors and tourism are found to be mostly welcoming and supportive. This contrasts with the literature on sites belonging to religions other than Buddhism which indicates that tourism is perceived by religious hosts as a burden and as a threat to the sanctity of their religious/sacred sites. Yet, there are challenges created by the visitors in Pu-Tuo and these are noted by the monks and nuns. Their ‘Buddhist way’ of undertaking visitor management is found to be different from what is described in the existing literature about non-Buddhist sites. It is suggested that the empathetic nature of Buddhism is at the root of the visitor management strategies adopted at Pu-Tuo. The findings thereby contribute to the existing scholarly knowledge of how Buddhist sites are managed in the Buddhist way
Recherches sur le genre Carabus L. dans les réserves naturelles de Ailao Shan et Wuliang Shan, Yunnan, Chine (Coleoptera, Carabidae)
Researches on the genus Carabus L. in the Ailao Shan and Wuliang Shan Nature Reserves, Yunnan, China (Coleoptera, Carabidae). Recent field investigations in the Ailao Shan and Wuliang Shan Ranges, in Yunnan Province, China, gave us the opportunity to compare their respective Carabus fauna in terms of impact of deforestation. In the primary forest of the Nature Reserves, we found a rich diversity with the following endemic species : Carabus (Apotomopterus) ludivinae Deuve, 1996, C. (A.) madefactus Cavazzuti, 1997, and C. (Pseudocoptolabrus) taliensis Fairmaire, 1886. From the same forests are also already known C. (A.) microtatos Cavazzuti, 1997, and C. (A.) saga Cavazzuti, 1997. Totally, not less than five different species are then registered from these primary forests. In addition, one of them firstly described from Ailao Shan is newly reported from Bangma Shan and for this reason is presumed to live in Wuliang Shan (C. microtatos ), while reciprocally, another species firstly described from Wuliang Shan is newly reported from Ailao Shan (C. madefactus). In these circumstances, both these mountainous ranges finally have a very similar Carabus fauna in the ancient forests located in altitude, above 2000 meters high.
In contrast, some investigations in Pinus plantations (P. harmandi) of the Ailao Shan Range, at 2400 m, showed us a poor diversity, with only the presence of Carabus (Apotomopterus) delavayi robustior Breuning, 1966. This subspecies is typical of the Yunnanese Plateau and it perhaps colonized the fields and the tree plantations where the primary forest was suppressed.
We also discovered in the Wuliang Shan Nature Reserve a subspecies of Carabus (Pseudocoptolabrus) taliensis Fairmaire, 1886, which was new for science : C. (P.) taliensis jingdongensis Deuve & Pan, 1999. This is the first time that one representative of the subgenus Pseudocoptolabrus is reported from the subtropical area of South Yunnan. A lectotype is designated for Carabus delavayi Fairmaire, 1886. The taxon talianus Hauser, 1919, is reestablished as a valid subspecies of Carabus (Apotomopterus) delavayi Fairmaire, 1886.Des recherches récentes dans les chaînes des monts Ailao Shan et Wuliang Shan, dans la province chinoise du Yunnan, nous ont permis de comparer leurs faunes respectives en termes d'impact de la déforestation. Dans la forêt primaire des réserves naturelles, nous avons trouvé une diversité élevée, avec les espèces endémiques suivantes : Carabus (Apotomopterus) ludivinae Deuve, 1996, C. (A.) madefactus Cavazzuti, 1997, et C. (Pseudocoptolabrus) taliensis Fairmaire, 1886. Des mêmes forêts étaient par ailleurs déjà connus C. (A.) microtatos Cavazzuti, 1997, et C. (A.) saga Cavazzuti, 1997. Au total, pas moins de cinq espèces différentes ont été signalées de ces forêts primaires. De plus, l'une d'elles décrite des monts Ailao Shan a été reprise dans les monts Bangma Shan et existe donc sans doute dans les monts Wuliang Shan (C. microtatos ), tandis que, réciproquement, une autre décrite des monts Wuliang Shan a été retrouvée dans les monts Ailao Shan (C. madefactus). Finalement, ces deux chaînes de montagnes ont des faunes de Carabus similaires dans les forêts anciennes situées en altitude, au-dessus de 2000 mètres d'altitude.
Au contraire, des recherches dans les plantations de Pins (Pinus harmandi ) de la chaîne des monts Ailao Shan, à 2400 m, nous ont montré une diversité faible, avec seulement la présence de Carabus (Apotomopterus) delavayi robustior Breuning, 1966. Cette sous-espèce est typique du plateau yunnanais et elle a peut-être colonisé les terres remaniées et les plantations d'arbres, là où la forêt primaire a disparu.
Nous avons aussi découvert dans la réserve naturelle des monts Wuliang Shan une sous-espèce nouvelle de Carabus (Pseudocoptolabrus) taliensis Fairmaire, 1886 : C. (P.) taliensis jingdongensis Deuve & Pan, 1999. C'est la première fois qu'un représentant du sous-genre Pseudocoptolabrus est ainsi signalé de la partie subtropicale du Sud-Yunnan.
Un lectotype est désigné pour Carabus delavayi Fairmaire, 1886. Le taxon talianus Hauser, 1919, est rétabli comme une sous-espèce valide de Carabus (Apotomopterus) delavayi Fairmaire, 1886.Deuve Thierry, Pan Yongzhi, Zhang Junwei.
