Author Paul Shaker Responds to the Video Review of his Book, Reclaiming Education for Democracy
Thank you and specifically the reviewers for your close attention to our book, Reclaiming Education for Democracy: Thinking Beyond No Child Left Behind (RED) (Shaker & Heilman, 2008), and for the fair and sensitive reading that you gave the book. As you can imagine, such academic attention is deeply gratifying. I have been invited to respond to the video review in print and I choose to do so in an informal manner, without footnotes, and by giving my individual reaction. At the same time I wish to acknowledge my co-author, Professor Elizabeth E. Heilman, of Michigan State University
Just Green Transitions: Between Terminological Inexactitudes, Conceptual Fragmentation, and the Exigency for a Theoretical Framework
The European Green Deal is promoting a twinned transition which is expected to be
just and green. Various related terminologies have gained ground without being precisely defined
or commonly agreed upon. Following an interdisciplinary exploratory approach, this contribution discusses the terminological inexactitudes which could risk a common conceptualisation, operationalisation, and implementation of the so-called Just Green Transitions. Through a critical interpretative literature review, this contribution highlights the conceptual fragmentation of these three dimensions: just as a polylemma of socio-spatial-temporal justice, green as a non-replication of pseudo-fashionable labels, and transitions as meta, multiple, and multilevel paths of institutional and social changes
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dynamic interactions between parametric pendulum and electrodynamical shaker
In this paper we investigate the dynamic interactions between a parametric pendulum and an electro-dynamical shaker aiming to explain a weak correlation between the theoretical predictions obtained for a parametric pendulum model and the experimental results for pendulum rig driven by the shaker. In particular, the quasi-periodic rotations were found experimentally to be co-existing with the period one rotations, where no such motion can be predicted for parametric pendulum with an ideal parametric excitation. First the experimental setup including the pendulum, the shaker and data acquisition system is described. Then the electro-dynamical shaker is modelled as two and a half degrees-of-freedom system. Next the parameters of the system have been identified by static and dynamic tests. Finally, comparisons between theoretical and experimental results were made for the pendulum–shaker system and a good agreement was obtained for a wide range of the system parameters
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Bandwidth-optimized force platform for a multiaxial shaker
The aim of this work is to improve the dynamic performances and the bandwidth of a novel multiaxial shaker, to be employed for measuring the three-dimensional apparent mass of a standing person subjected to vibrations. In particular, the first part of the thesis involves the employment of lightweight design principles and composite materials, with the aim of optimizing the mass and the stiffness of the moving parts of the structure: hence, a series of numerical simulations would address the most effective changes to be applied in order to enlarge the system bandwidth. Then, the second part of the work focuses on the implementation of a force measurement system to be installed on the same structure, intended to convert the shaker in a force-sensing platform. The proposed system would allow the measurement of the three spatial components of the force and torque vectors generated at the centre of the moving platform by a standing human body subjected to multiaxial vibrations, thus allowing the evaluation of its apparent mass
