A prospect of moving towards free milk quota market in Ireland – will milk quota movement follow efficiency?
Quota trade in Ireland is ‘ring fenced’ to milk processors where farmers are not allowed to trade milk quota outside their designated milk processor. This ensures milk production staying within a region but has implications for the efficiency of milk production. In this paper, we simulated a free milk quota market in Ireland and compared the results with a milk quota exchange which was ring fenced to determine if the quota move from an inefficient region to a more efficient region. The results show that quota indeed follow efficiency of production when there is restriction over trade area.Milk quota trade, Irish quota market, Farm level model, Agricultural and Food Policy,

Electric machine and battery sizing for hybrid electric heavy-duty vehicles
Medium- to heavy duty vehicles make a major contribution to freight transportation and are expected to keep growing continuously. In order to reduce the CO2 emissions and avoid climate change, ambitious regulations have been introduced. To fulfill these requirements, aerodynamic drag and vehicle mass reduction, more efficient conventional internal combustion engines (ICE) and alternative powertrain architectures are being developed. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are one of the solutions with the highest potential for fuel economy improvement, provided that all the subsystems at play are correctly sized. In this work, a power based approach is used to define the electric machine (EM) and battery size by considering the power request in braking and technology constraints in the battery and power electronics. The hybrid layouts under study are P0, P1, and P2 parallel applied to a 35 Ton vehicle whose model is developed in a Matlab/Simulink environment using the velocity profile from the European Union Commission simulation tool (VECTO). The Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy is used as an energy management system to provide optimal torque references to ICE and EM. The regional delivery and long haul driving cycles, which are the official driving cycles for the certification of heavy duty vehicles in the EU, were used to evaluate the performance of hybrid solutions with respect to conventional pure ICE

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods

The typical optic disc features of glaucomatous disease are often subjective, and often overlap with disc changes in compressive intracranial lesions. Ancillary diagnostic testing such as retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) analysis and visual field testing can elevate the index of suspicion of an underlying non-glaucomatous process. We present a case of a nonfunctional macroadenoma coexisting with NTG, although it is unclear if the concurrent brain lesion aggravated or caused it. This case highlights the diagnostic challenge of recognizing optic cupping and non-matching abnormalities in the visual field from a coexisting intracranial lesion, even in the absence of other neurological signs. Keywords: cupping, normal tension glaucoma, pituitary macroadenoma, visual field defect
Testing tri-state and pass transistor circuit structures
Tri-state structures are used to implement multiplexers and buses because these
structures are faster than AND/OR logic structures. But testing of tri-state structures has
some issues associated with it. A stuck open control line of a tri-state gate will cause
some lines in the circuit to float and take unknown values. A stuck-on control line can
cause fighting when the two drivers connected to the same node drive different values.
This thesis develops new gate level fault models and dynamic test patterns that take care
of these problems. The models can be used with traditional stuck-at and transition fault
automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) to ensure high fault coverage.
This research focuses on producing good test coverage with reduced effort for tristate
and pass transistor structures. We do circuit level modeling to help develop and
validate gate level models, which can be used in production ATPG. We study the two
primary effects of interest, capacitive coupling and leakage, and analyze the tri-state
structures using these two effects. Coupling and leakage can cause a Z or X state to be
seen as 0 or 1 in some cases. We develop parameterized models of behavior of common
structures using these effects and some parameters such as number of fan-ins. We also
develop gate level models of tri-state circuits that would replace the tri-state library cells in the ATPG engine. This work develops a methodology to make tri-state and pass
transistor circuit structures more usable in the industry
Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
