    Proposing a new score to measure personal happiness by identifying the contributing factors

The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ), that has 29 items, has been used widely to estimate personal happiness. The OHQ is used to quantify personal happiness based on an equal effectiveness assumption for all 29 items. Although the OHQ has been used by several studies, very few studies assess the contribution of the individual OHQ items in explaining personal happiness. The current study attempts to fill this gap by assessing the contribution of the individual OHQ items in explaining personal happiness as a latent variable. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to assess the relationship of the individual OHQ items in explaining personal happiness in Skudai, Johor, Malaysia. The significant OHQ items that are extracted from SEM results, are used to develop a new personal happiness measurement score. The SEM factor loading values are used to weight the extracted items. All usual clustering methods are used in this study and the most suitable one based on the higher silhouette value is chosen to cluster the proposed personal happiness index. Finally, the relationships between socio demographic factors and the proposed personal happiness index clusters are tested by Gamm and Pearson Chi-Square tests. The SEM results show that 16 out of the 29 OHQ items have poor associations with personal happiness and can be excluded from the model. Most of the non-significant items (items with low level of association) are negatively worded items and the majority of the significant items are related to personal attitudes. The proposed personal happiness index can help to save time and avoid confusion. © 2019 Elsevier Lt

    Applying non-parametric models to explore urban life satisfaction in European cities

    peer reviewedAlthough urban quality of life is one of the important topics in most of the European policies, these policies are not supported by empirical analysis. Furthermore, there are few studies in urban quality of life area that consider a sufficiently large number of cities and related factors and those that focused on European cities applied parametric analysis techniques that cannot handle multicollinearity. To remedy the aforementioned shortcomings, in this study, a large number of factors related to urban quality of life are investigated in different European cities, and to handle multicollinearity, non-parametric analysis techniques are adopted. The data stem from the Eurostat (2015), collecting information on urban quality of life for >40,000 citizens in 112 urban areas. Different non-parametric modeling techniques are applied and the results of the method that yielded the highest overall accuracy, i.e. the C5.0 algorithm, are presented. The results show that from the wide scope of considered factors, five main variables play an important role in urban life satisfaction, i.e. (i) feeling safe in the city, (ii) satisfaction with healthcare services in the city, (iii) satisfaction with the state of streets and buildings in the neighborhood, (iv) satisfaction with public transport in the city, and (v) availability of retail shops.EMR Connect (ECON

    Nowadays transporting cargo via containers are significant for every shipment. The movement of container involves multi modes to reach destination. In Malaysia, efficient transport networking systems are catalyst for container terminal in providing excellent services to their client. The paper focuses on the metamorphosis of the terminal efficiency and container movements at 6 major container terminals in Peninsular Malaysia. The aim is to analyse the efficiency of container terminals that contributes significant economic development in Peninsular Malaysia. Non parametric approach under frontier method is used to analyse panel data from 2003 to 2010 in relation with container terminal equipments and throughput. Result of the analysis shows no significant relationship between container terminal size and efficiency. Thus, efficiency is determined from allocation of resources efficiently by terminal operators and not by size of terminals.     A regression model for vessel turnaround time

    Turnaround time in port industry portrays capability and ability of container terminal in providing services. This study is motivated by the rapid development in port container terminal, in providing efficient and effective services and high port productivity, with the aim to achieve optimum port performance. Research arises from the issue between port throughputs (i.e. Teus- Twenty Footer Equivalent Unit) and port facilities (e.g. quay crane, prime movers etc), as currently it is not possible to determine significant factor(s) that influence port performance, in terms of turnaround time. For this purpose, the research proposes a regression model that relates these variables, i.e. turnaround time and port facilities. Two ports in Port Klang – Westport and Northport – are used as the subjects from which actual vessel call data collected between August 1 and August 31, 2005 are used. The results show that vessel turnaround time is highly correlated with crane allocation as well as the number of containers loaded and discharged. The benefits of such model include giving port operators opportunity to determine optimum crane allocation to achieve the desired turnaround time given the quantity of containers to be processed

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The Application of the Tripod Beta Approach in Assessing the Effectiveness of the Port Security Measures in Compliance to the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code

    Presently the port facility measures their compliance ISPS Code requirement is via periodical internal and external audit where documentations sampling are cross reference to the measures and procedures stipulated in the Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP). Unlike the safety related processes where the availability of positive performance measurement system allows an organization to determine the effectiveness of the system implementation and identification of level of performance. The absent of such system in the security environment leave questions on the method of determination on it effectiveness level, and how the port facility would positively identified gap(s) in the implementation without having to expect for accidents or attacks on the facility to occur, to determine the level of effectiveness. This research studies the various quality and quantity assessment process for determining risk and accident investigation tools used by the industry. From the tools available, Tripod-Beta accident investigation approach is identified as the most appropriate approach to measures the effectiveness of security measures and procedures implemented by the port facility. From there the audit measurement methodology was developed and tested on port facilities that complied to the ISPS Code requirement
