Cultural practices before and during pregnancy: example of Turkey

    No full text
Şahin, Ezgi (Arel Author)Having children is a substantial part of cultural identity in our society. From past till now, various customs, traditions and beliefs have been applied, especially during pre-pregnancy and pregnancy period in Anatolia. Some of them are still in practice and effective. However, all these practices to have children are applied generally to women, and there are few practices applied on men regarding the elimination of infertility because women are regarded as responsible for not having children in Anatolia. In this compilation, the traditional beliefs and practices applied before and during pregnancy in Anatolia are explained. National and international articles on this subject are analysed by using keywords in Google academic database. As a result, it is found that some practices negatively affect both the mother's and child's health. So, awareness on this subject should be raised, unhealthy practices and beliefs should be discussed and changed, and beneficial ones should be supported

The Effect of Self-Enhancement and Regulatory Focus on Word of Mouth

Ezgi Akpınar (MEF Author)##nofulltext##Word of mouth is one of the main drivers that shapes consumers’ decisions. With the advent of social media, consumer reviews, opinions about brands propagate ata higher spread and reach masses. Thus, giving the rising interest in word of mouth, many brands are interested in understanding what makes consumers talk favorablyabout their products. Existing research suggests that one of the psychologicalmotivations to engage in positive word of mouth is self-enhancement. Consumers liketo provide positive information, which makes them look good to others. Yet, it is not somuch known how self-enhancement affects sharing. Do consumers also provide positiverecommendations when they already feel good about themselves? Our research showsthat self enhancement boosts the likelihood of giving positive recommendations. Yet,this pattern does not always hold and can be moderated with regulatory focus. We showthat when consumers are under high prevention focus, higher self-enhancement, in fact, decreases the likelihood of giving positive recommendations. This framework shedlights on how companies can encourage positive word of mouth, by understanding selfenhancement and regulatory focus mechanisms

The soul of the White Muslim: Race, empire and Africa in Turkey

    No full text
This dissertation explores the articulation of race and religion with global capitalism in the context of Turkey’s contemporary relations with Africa south of the Sahara under the neoliberal authoritarian regime of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). In contrast to the political science and international relations literatures on South-South relations, this anthropological research explores how the transnational political, economic and religious entanglements in the Global South are racially structured. More specifically, it asks how and why the recent orientation towards Africa south of the Sahara has intertwined with a racial orientation towards whiteness, an affective orientation towards the global umma (community of believers), and a temporal orientation towards the Ottoman imperial past. While whiteness has historically been associated with Western modernity and state secularism in Turkey, the Islamist critics of these twin ideological projects self-identified with blackness as a metaphor of victimization under the secularist regime. This dissertation argues that Africa provides a racial terrain for the Black Turk to reinvent himself as White Muslim in alignment with the consolidation of the Islamists’ hegemony over the last decades. I therefore explore Turkey’s recent transnational entanglements in Africa as a spatial fix, not only for the crises of capitalism, but equally for the contradictions of racial formations on a national scale. My analysis of the construction of Muslim whiteness contributes to global critical race theory by showing how local racial formations articulate with global white supremacy in inventive ways. Furthermore, this analysis makes a critical contribution to the scholarship on the racialization of Muslims by thinking beyond the post 9/11 context and taking into consideration racial formations within the Muslim world.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2022-12-01The student, Ezgi Guner, accepted the attached license on 2020-12-02 at 10:16.The student, Ezgi Guner, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2020-12-02 at 10:17.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2020-12-07 at 08:24.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #16030 on 2021-03-04 at 16:33:14Made available in DSpace on 2021-03-05T21:47:27Z (GMT). Dr. Suphi Ezgi`s tanbur method: Transcription and comment

    No full text
As It is seen above, the method seems to be a complete rough draft, hand written by author. Sometimes, entering an article for chapter titles has been omitted or forgotten, so this surely supports the belief that this is a rough draft only. Totally 27 studies have been given in method. The marks used on this studies have been explained at the beginning of the method. If worked according to these, Tanbur playing manner of Dr. Suphi EZGİ can be easily understood. As we mentioned in our examination, It is understood that whole method contains of prepared studies aiming to intensify on different playing style. In method, expect studies, we have not encountered any work or a clause saying that this work is to be played. This reinforces the impression that the method has not been completed yet. Also, at the end of the method there is no sign to confirm the completion of it. Therefore, It is understood that these are the first rough drafts of author and the complete method has not been formed yet. It starts with a simple knowledge and simple studies and then getting harder with studies in pedagogic manner. Under the light of these data, we have to mention that the method, considering the information covered and history of music, is an important writing. However, being in complete is a great loss for the instrument, Tanbur. Furthermore, even It is a rough draft only, It is a result of a meticulous study

Unraveling the Roles of Distrust, Suspicion of Infidelity, and Jealousy in Cyber Dating Abuse Perpetration: An Attachment Theory Perspective

    No full text
People who are anxiously attached, distrustful and jealous of their partners, and suspect infidelity are more likely to use psychological dating violence. Is this also true for cyber dating abuse perpetration (CDAP)? This study investigated the prevalence of and gender differences in self-reported CDAP and whether trust, anticipated partner infidelity, and jealousy serially mediated the association between anxious attachment and CDAP in a sample of Turkish college students. College students (N = 390) completed the Cyber Dating Violence Inventory, Anxious Attachment subscale of the Experiences in Close Relationship Scale-Short Form, Dyadic Trust Scale, Cognitive Jealousy subscale of the Multidimensional Jealousy Scale, Partners’ Intentions Towards Infidelity Scale, and a Demographic Information Form. A total of 67% of the sample used at least one cyber abusive behavior with their partner over the last 6 months. A multiple serial mediation model indicated that greater anxious attachment was related to more dyadic distrust, the anticipation of partner infidelity, and jealousy, and, in turn, to the use of cyber dating abuse. Overall, results show that the prevalence of CDAP is high and that attachment theory offers a promising framework for identifying predictors of CDAP in emerging adults. These findings have implications for research, intervention, and prevention of CDAP by identifying potential risk factors for perpetrating cyber abuse. © The Author(s) 2020

Hakan Verdu Martinez, Ezgi (Anadolu Author)Clay, along with humanity’s existence has been used as the most primitive material in making all kinds of goods to meet daily needs. One of these daily use objects is the toy that carries great importance as tool of entertainment, communications and development. The human instinct to explore and play has been shaped in various ways with the clay in different civilizations. Terracotta has become the basic material of the different toys as the main tool of act of playing. Ceramic whistles, widely seen from Prehistoric times to the present day from Europe to Asia, America, pre-Columbian cultures, also appeared in various civilizations as a type of whistling instrument as the ritual objects used in ceremonies. In this sense, ceramic whistles began to lose attention, especially in Turkey started to disappear with missing values due to diversity, changes and the development of toys within the industrial revolution. They are being produced as nostalgic toys, souvenir objects with limited edition. In this study, reference to the history of ceramic whistles, the arrival of the present day is being explained, as handicraft production, particularly by means of traditional aspect

Ergenlik döneminde eğlence amaçlı esrar kullanımının ve subklinik psikoz riskinin, beynin beyaz madde bütünlüğüne ve yapısal bağlantısına etkisi

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 43-61).The impact of cannabis use on the psychosis risk in the healthy population has been less examined in the literature. Furthermore, previous diffusion tensor imag-ing and structural connectivity studies investigating the effects of cannabis use and psychosis risk offer contradictory results. To address these gaps and inconsistencies in the literature, the author examined whether recreational use of cannabis increases the risk of subclinical psychosis. The author further ex-amined the relationship between recreational cannabis use, subclinical psychosis, and white matter microstructure or structural network connectivity. Twenty-five adolescent cannabis users and 25 demographically matched controls participated in the study. The Cannabis Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) was used to assess cannabis consumption. Subclinical psychosis was evaluated with the Community Assessment of Psychic Experience (CAPE-42) questionnaire. While ROI-based Tract Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS) was used to examine white matter integrity in specified region of interests, Structural Connectivity Analysis was performed to examine brain structural topology. White matter integrity was assessed by four diffusion tensor derived measures: fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity, and radial diffusivity, while structural network topology was examined by several graph-theory metrics: global efficiency, local efficiency and clustering coefficient. In order to eliminate possible confounding effects of alcohol and to-bacco use, weekly alcohol and daily tobacco consumption were also considered. The findings revealed that cannabis users scored higher on subclinical psychosis compared to non-users. ROI-based TBSS analysis indicated that cannabis use and subclinical psychosis do not affect white matter integrity in corpus collosum and superior longitudinal fasciculus. Similarly, the network connectivity parame-ters were not affected by the recreational cannabis use and psychosis risk. These results might indicate that recreational cannabis use increases the psychosis risk in adolescence, but that recreational cannabis use and subclinical psychosis risk together do not affect white matter microstructure and topology.by Hande Ezgi Atmac
