Satisfiability Algorithm for Syntactic Read-kk-times Branching Programs

    No full text
The satisfiability of a given branching program is to determine whether there exists a consistent path from the root to 1-sink. In a syntactic read-k-times branching program, each variable appears at most k times in any path from the root to a sink. We provide a satisfiability algorithm for syntactic read-k-times branching programs with n variables and m edges that runs in time O\left(\poly(n, m^{k^2})\cdot 2^{(1-\mu(k))n}\right), where \mu(k) = \frac{1}{4^{k+1}}. Our algorithm is based on the decomposition technique shown by Borodin, Razborov and Smolensky [Computational Complexity, 1993]

Received 30 September 2024. Accepted 5 March 2025. Published online 30 April 2025.The paper examines the digital geography of the virtual Seto community in the VK social network (also known as VKontakte), focusing on how dispersed Seto people in Russia and Estonia use digital spaces to communicate, as well as express, preserve, and promote their cultural identity. By applying a multi-sited ethnographic methodology, the research involves both online explorations and offline semi-structured interviews, with fieldwork conducted in the Pechory District. Using the network and territory approaches to digital ethnography, the study highlights how the VK serves as a digital territory where Setos, divided by distances and physical borders, connect, share cultural practices, and foster a sense of community. Special attention is given to the Seto traditions of leelo polyphonic singing and festive costumes, both of which serve as vital markers of ethnic identity in this digital landscape. Through content analysis of Seto personal profiles and public pages, the research reveals how social networks help maintain connections and how digital geographies are constantly shaped and reshaped by cultural exchanges. This study underscores the adaptability of online spaces in sustaining fragmented ethnic communities across physical distances. This work was supported by the Russian Science Foundation under Grant 23-78-10079, https://rscf.ru/project/23-78-10079/The author is grateful to the assistance of the Museum Reserve Izborsk, Manor Museum of the Seto people in the village of Sigovo, Pechory Museum of History, and the “Flax Province” Museum. The author is also highly appreciative of the valuable consultations and recommendations provided by Elena Variksoo, Tatiana Ogareva, Mare Piho, Malle Bogacheva, and Vera Fest

    Radiation reaction in high-intensity fields

    No full text
    R. Soc. Lond. A 167, 148 (1938)], many authors have tried to reformulate this model of the so-called “radiation reaction”. Recently, this effect has become important in ultra-intense laser– electron (plasma) interactions. In our recent research, we found a way of stabilizing the radiation reaction by quantum electrodynamics (QED) vacuum fluctuation [K Seto et al., Prog. Theor

The Screening Scale for Pedophilic Interests (SSPI): Construct, Predictive, and Incremental Validity

    No full text
This study of 410 adult male sex offenders against children, using data from the Dynamic Supervision Project (Hanson, Harris, Scott, & Helmus, 2007), examined the construct, predictive, and incremental validity of the Screening Scale for Pedophilic Interests (SSPI; Seto & Lalumière, 2001), a brief proxy measure of phallometrically assessed sexual response to children that is based on sexual victim characteristics. As predicted, the SSPI was significantly related to the Deviant Sexual Interests item on the STABLE-2007 (Hanson et al., 2007), a dynamic risk measure encompassing multiple domains, and with the Deviant Sexual Interests item from its predecessor, the STABLE-2000 (Hanson et al., 2007). The SSPI was unrelated (or more weakly related) to items measuring general antisociality. In addition, the SSPI significantly predicted sexual recidivism, defined as new charges or convictions for sexual offenses, and a broader sexual recidivism outcome that included breaches of community supervision conditions that might involve sexually motivated behavior (e.g., being in the presence of children unsupervised). The SSPI did not add to the predictive accuracy of 2 actuarial risk measures, the Static-99R and Static-200R (Helmus, Thornton, Hanson, & Babchishin, 2012), but it did add to the predictive accuracy of the STABLE-2007. Additional analyses suggest the SSPI can serve as a substitute for the STABLE-2007 Deviant Sexual Interests item, if necessary (e.g., in archival research), when assessing sexual offenders against children

RECOMBINANT HUMAN THYROID PEROXIDASE GENERATED IN EUKARYOTIC CELLS - A SOURCE OF SPECIFIC ANTIGEN FOR THE IMMUNOLOGICAL ASSAY OF ANTIMICROSOMAL ANTIBODIES IN THE SERA OF PATIENTS WITH AUTOIMMUNE THYROID-DISEASE

    No full text
Recombinant, enzymatically active human thyroid peroxidase (hTPO) generated in nonthyroidal eukaryotic cells was compared with Graves' thyroid microsomes as a source of antigen for the immunological detection of antimicrosomal/anti-hTPO antibodies. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of 51 sera, selected to produce a balanced distribution of antimicrosomal antibody (anti-MSA) levels, revealed (at 1:100 serum dilution) a moderately good correlation between anti-MSA and anti-hTPO antibody levels (r = 0.668; P < 0.001). However, a number of sera with high anti-MSA levels yielded markedly discordant values between the two assays. A much lower correlation was observed between antithyroglobulin and anti-hTPO antibody levels (r = 0.315;P < 0.05). At higher serum dilutions (1:1,000 and 1:10,000), at which low affinity, high capacity binding reactions will be reduced, the correlation between anti-MSA and anti-hTPO antibody values was greatly improved (r = 0.906 and 0.902, respectively; P < 0.001), and there were no longer widely discrepant values between the two assays. In summary, the present study indicates that recombinant hTPO expressed in nonthyroidal cells provides an unlimited source of human TPO of unvarying quality for anti-hTPO antibody assays. This material offers increased specificity over standard anti-MSA assays that use thyroid cell microsomes as antigen
