Factor Analysis of the Italian Version of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire in a Community Sample

    No full text
Despite difficulties measuring parenting styles, many studies have demonstrated a significant relationship between disruptive children and certain parenting practices. One of the most frequently used scales to measure parenting styles is the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ). This scale was originally defined based on theoretical dimensions and using samples from the USA. Therefore, both factor analysis studies and its adaptation to other countries have been proposed to improve and widen its use. The aim of this study was to adapt the APQ to the Italian population. A community sample of 258 mothers and children (94 %) and 192 fathers (70 %) from 274 families with children from 10- to 14-years-old who agreed to participate and met the inclusion criteria completed the APQ. Principal components and exploratory factor analyses resulted in a unique 19-item version of the APQ for mothers, fathers, and children. This unified version has resulted in two factor categories: positive (12 items) and negative parenting (7 items). The internal consistency and goodness of fit of the model were satisfactory. Moderate and significant convergent validity were found for mothers and fathers but not for children. In fact, we found differences in validity rates among the participants. Children perceived less positive and more negative parenting than did fathers and mothers, and mothers believed that they provided more positive parenting than did other parents. In conclusion, the APQ Italian version of the parents and children global report forms are considered a suitable measure for positive and negative parenting styles with acceptable validity and reliability indice

Psychometric properties of the childhood anxiety sensitivity index in a sample of Catalan school children

This study tested the utility of assessing anxiety sensitivity (AS) in children by investigating the long term stability and psychometric properties of a Catalan version of the Childhood Anxiety Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index (CASI, Silverman et al., 1991, Journal of Clinical Child Psychology, 20, 162-168) in a sample of 291 elementary-school children. The Catalan CASI demonstrated acceptable internal consistency and convergent validity estimates, similar to previous research with the English version. The measure also showed incremental validity in relation to other measures of anxiety and test-retest analyses suggested considerable three month and one-year stability in children's level of AS. Finally, a principal component analysis of the Catalan CASI yielded five lower-order factors grouped on a unique higher-order factor. The similarity of the findings to previous research on the CASI and on AS in English speaking children and adults is discussed and some suggestions for future investigations are presented

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

    No full text
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    No full text
Este diagnóstico será un valioso instrumento para detectar similitudes y diferencias entre profesiones y contextos de práctica, y plantear futuras estrategias de mejora de prácticas y políticas seguras y centradas en los pacientes y sus familias.[eng] Patient safety practices continue to be immersed in a biomedical orientation, in which the competencies of all professionals are not recognized, limiting interprofessional collaboration and patient participation in view of a holistic orientation. This research project has as general objective exploring clinical safety discourses of health professionals of specialized care in Mallorca, according to the profession –Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medicine and Social Work- and the professional practice scope –clinical practice and care management-. Consequently, five specific objectives are proposed: (1) analyzing the conceptualization of patient safety, (2) identifying related factors with clinical practice and care management, (3) analyzing the relationship of patient safety with collaborative practice and patient participation, (4) identifying strategies to improve safety clinical practices and risk management, and (5) analyzing similarities and differences in discourses according to profession and context, and the inequalities that it generates in patient care; Thus, a study of critical discourse analysis has been designed from the critical-social paradigm and in particular using concepts from Axel Honneth's Theory of Recognition. In this case, a theoretical-intentional sampling will be carried out to select nurses, physiotherapists, physicians and social workers who practice in the scope of clinical practice and care management. For data collection and generation, a semi-structured interview will be conducted to a total of 32 professionals, flexible to theoretical saturation, and two focus groups will be conducted to a total of 16 participants, homogeneous in terms of professional context, a group of 8 clinical professionals and another group of 8 management professionals. A discourse analysis will be performed with a critical focus on inequalities and power relations, dominance and oppression in relation to patient safety, depending on the profession and the professional practice scope of the participants. Furthermore, rigor criteria of credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability and ethical considerations according to bioethical principles and through informed consent have been considered, in addition to the possible limitations of the study. Finally, two interviews have been piloted, for the improvement of the interview script, the contact with the field work and the generation of preanalytical intuitions. The results of this future research will be useful to obtain a diagnosis of the situation of the professionals’ culture of patient safety, according to profession and professional practice scope.
