Transport and dispersion processes in the ocean are crucial, as they determine the fate of biological and chemical quantities drifting with ocean currents. Coastal zones, located between the continent and the open ocean, are subject to numerous anthropogenic pressures causing pollution, toxic algal blooms and invasive species. Undersatnding the transport and dispersion processes of particulate matter in these areas is essential to preserve these environments and enable their sustainable management. Numerical circulation models and observation systems have a significant potential to study dispersion processes. However, they are limited by the complexity of the coastal ocean environment and by the lack of spatio-temporal resolution. This thesis aims to contribute to the improvement of the realistic representation and characterization of coastal current convergence structures using fusion of heterogeneous data. This method consists to optimallu interpolate in space and time surface current velocities derived from Lagrangian drifter deployments to constrain different regular surface current fields (modeled, observed by high-frequency radar). In order to test the capabilities of this techniquen it is applied in two very different study regions - the Eastern English Channel and the southeastern Bay of Biscay. The proposed optimization significantly improves the reconstruction of surface current fields, reducing by 50% the Lagrangian error, thus enhancing our understanding of particulate matter transport and dispersion processes. By calculating various Lagrangian quantities such as dispersion, Lyapunov exponents and Lagrangian divergence, it is possible to identify areas of high turbulence and map the spatial distribution of coastal current convergence structures. Hence, thanks to optimization, the identification of coastal current convergence structures is more precise, enabling a better understanding of the transport of particulate matter at the surface of coastal zones

Despite the growing interest , the use of tidal energy still lags far behind other renewable resource. This delayed development can be explained, on the one hand, by the absence of a relevant methodology for quantifying the hydrokinetic potential and, on the other hand, by the hostile marine environment, in which turbulent phenomena apply constraints on the structure of marine current turbines. The use of High Frequency Radar, presented in the first part of this thesis, provides a powerful tool for analyzing tidal dynamics and its spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Never used in the fields of renewable marine energy, it offers a convincing alternative to numerical modeling which is often chosen although generating questionable results because of simplistic conceptualization of real phenomena. The second part of this thesis is the study of the impact of a fully developed turbulent flow on the performance of a Darrieus-type turbine prototypes. The spectral analysis of the current velocity time series revealed the scalar properties of the flow. Multiscale characterization showed that the flow is driven by a dynamic process of successive breaks of fluid structures of size ranging from the injection scale to the molecular diffusion scale. Finally, the dynamical scaling of the turbulence of the velocity and power spectra generated by the marine current turbine has revealed a certain similarity between the size of the eddies structures that govern the flow and the dimensions of the turbine

Characterizing the circulation and the coastal water quality evolution in the EEC is a major stake in many applications, particularly in a such bio-diversified region. The hydrodynamism plays an essential role in dispersal and mixing processes along the Nord-Pas-de-Calais shores. The EEC funnel physiology gives place to a tidal asymmetry which induces flood conditions stronger but shorter then ebb conditions, involving a residual northern drift, strengthened by the dominant south-west winds. This atypical context confers a complex structure of the coastal flow in a ROFI (Region Of Freshwater Influence). Using the hydrodynamical model MARS3D permitted to underline complexes phenomenon at regional scale and understand the genesis and dynamic of the so called, "coastal river". Thanks to high resolution modelling, circulation pattern inside Boulogne-sur-Mer harbor has been characterized. We identified an anti-cyclonic eddy, characteristic of the flood conditions and responsible of a rapid evacuation of tracers passing through the harbor. In opposition, during ebb, a southward drift traps passive tracers inside the port. This trapping effect can be limited or emphasized depending on wind directions and freshwater inputs. Besides, harbor morphological changes have been assessed in order to propose innovative solution to improve water quality inside the harbor. A similar work was developed in the "baie de Somme" (France) to understand water quality existing issues. Many activities are suspected to supply microbial contamination within the bay, especially the marshes sheep accused to be the major contributor in E. Coli. Assuming passive tracers as bacterial material we have studied dispersion and transport processes within the bay. This study permit to underline environmental conditions favorable to evacuate or maintain pollution emitted from several water sources supplying the bay. A current converging zone has been shownsurrounding the Crotoy area (were the water quality is bad), and simulations reveal an accumulation place for most of the different water bodies relative to the fresh water inputs. This work on circulation pattern in the Bay of Somme regarding environmental conditions, contribute to improve water quality studies and further sustainable coastal managements

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The Gulf of Tonkin (GoT), located on the shelf in the northwestern part the Vietnam East Sea, / South China Sea (VNES/SCS), is very rich in natural resources. Despite its strategic location, the regional circulation and scales of its variability are only poorly understood preventing a progress in environmental studies. A limited knowledge of the circulation in the Gulf is tightly related to the lack of observations. To make up the gap, a network of High-Frequency (HF) radars was deployed in the region providing with an opportunity to monitor the coastal circulation continuously via the remote sensing of surface currents. The 2.5-year-long velocity time series, derived from radar measurements in the southern Gulf, allowed characterization of the flow variability and identification of key process governing this variability. It was shown that tidal motions account for a major part of this variability(60% of the total variance). The freshwater input strongly affects the seasonal variability of currents by modifying the polarization of tidal current ellipses and causing the coastal current intensification in late summer and autumn. The monsoon wind controls the large-scale dynamics and modulates the spatial extension of the coastal current. Transport patterns of passive tracers and turbulent dispersion regimes were investigated in the Lagrangian framework using the velocity fields from radar measurements and high-resolution SYMPHONIE model simulations. Lagrangian diagnostics (relative dispersion and Finite Size Lyapunov Exponents), revealed a significant change in dispersion rate and transport pathways caused by the monsoon wind and freshwater input. The effect of turbulence and horizontal steering on particulate material distribution was found particularly strong in four regions of the gulf. It was shown that fine-scale dynamics plays a major role in structuring the phytoplanktondistribution there

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
