Review of 'Caring for Strangers', by Megha Amrith (ed.2017)
Caring for Strangers (2017) takes the reader on an interesting journey to the everyday lives of Filipino migrant nurse workers placed in Singapore. It does so focusing on the narratives and the frequent encounters that anthropologist Megha Amrith had over her fieldwork time in Singapore. The result is a rich compilation of the social, political, and economic factors that make many men and women in the Philippines undertake nursing education with the purpose of migrating to work abroad. This review of the book focuses on three aspects of the book that the present author found to be of great importance in the contemporary anthropology of economy and labour: the political economy of global capital, the marketization of care work, and the ways in which these migrant workers built their subjectivities.

INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE SCREENING PRACTICES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
Intimate Partner Violence Screening Practices at an Urban Midwestern Hospital’s Emergency Department Presenting Author: Viktoriya Tulchinskaya, Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Mentor: Catherine L. Satterwhite, PhD, MSPH, MPH Contributors: Andrew Park, MD, Megha Ramaswamy, PhD, MPH BACKGROUND: The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends intimate partner violence (IPV) screening for all women of reproductive age. The emergency department (ED) represents an important venue for screening an at-risk population who may not regularly access health care services. OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence and correlates of IPV screening in an urban Midwestern emergency department. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted among a convenience sample of all women and men aged 18-44 who visited the ED of a large, Midwestern metropolitan hospital between January 4th and 10th, 2015. Patient demographics, IPV screening status, and ED visit characteristic were collected. IPV screening status was compared by age, gender, race, ethnicity, primary language, need for interpreter, use of interpreter, insurance type, reason for visit, time/day of visit, number of previous ED visits, pregnancy status, and contraception method. RESULTS: Mean age of the study population was 42 years, and the most common reason for visit was “abdominal pain.” Based on pilot data from 30 subjects (target: 360 eligible subjects), 87% of females and 90% of males received recommended IPV screening. Data suggested that ethnic minority status corresponded to a lower prevalence of screening: 57% of patients who identified as Hispanic or Latino received IPV screening, compared to 87% of Non-Hispanic patients (p = 0.12). CONCLUSIONS: Patients of female gender and minority status may be less likely to receive IPV screening. Further analysis is required to examine ED follow-up among patients who screened positively for IPV

A cluster of central retinal artery occlusions following cataract surgery
Purpose: To report a series of central retinal artery occlusions (CRAO) following cataract surgery complicated by posterior capsular rupture (PCR). Methods: Data from 14 patients with acute CRAO following cataract surgery was collected for this study including subject demographics, initial and final best-corrected visual acuity, systemic investigations, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) findings. Results: Mean subject age was 59.9 ± 12.1 years. Male: Female ratio was 1:1. All patients were operated between October and November 2015 and presented with acute vision loss 1 to 4 days after surgery. All the patients underwent cataract surgery under peribulbar anesthesia and had PCR for which anterior vitrectomy (AV) was done. In all the cases Ethylene oxide (ETO) sterilized vitrectomy probe was used for AV. Clinical picture of CRAO was noted in all the cases during the immediate postoperative period. OCT showed inner retinal layer hyperreflectivity while FFA was normal in all the cases. The final visual acuity was poor in all the eyes. This paper discusses the possible mechanisms of CRAO in these cases. Conclusion: CRAO is a potential complication of peribulbar anesthesia for intraocular surgery in patients with vascular risk factors and hence any substance that can aggravate the vasospasm in such patients should be used cautiously. Vasospasm could be caused by ETO as residual ETO could be present in the vitrectomy machine tubing causing toxicity. It is recommended to be cautious while using ETO sterilized instruments for cataract surgery
Intimate Urbanity of Rue du Moulin: Study on the fragmentation and the collective memory of Rue du Moulin
The street is perhaps the most prosaic of the city’s public realm, allowing us to view the very ordinary practices of life and livelihood – a space to move or pause, to meet friends, post a letter, to buy goods and is composed of an amalgamation of rooms along it. Due to the possibility of maneuvering, it tends to exhibit the external spatial reinforcements taken to mark a person’s position. This makes a street not a linear study but a system of social and spatial labyrinths. Hence, the street gives a peek at not only what was and what is, but also the lived realities of allegiance and participation by understanding the social and cultural formations occurring within itself. This is observed by unfolding the street to understand the levels of interactions (or scenes) within the layers between the building and street. The thesis focuses on the field between architecture and urbanism, on the domain between public and private. It is an attempt to bring an interactive notion to ‘street’ and its role in the design of urban areas and smaller architecture projects. It aims to reinforce the quality of open space within and between the built structures and the existing corridors by blurring the borders of inside and outside.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science
