Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

No full textDem Bedarf an lebendiger Theaterkultur steht eine Notwendigkeit in der Architektur gegenüber, auf kultur- und gesellschaftspolitische, wirtschaftlich sowie technisch orientierte Bedingungen zu reagieren: Neue Unterhaltungsbedürfnisse der Bevölkerung erfordern Medienkombinationen und Experimentiermöglichkeiten; die hohe Zuschussbedürftigkeit von Bühnenbetrieben ist aufgrund der Haushaltslage kaum noch tragbar; viele als Theater geführte Häuser genügen mit ihrer z.T. maroden Bausubstanz vor allem in den Neuen Ländern der Bundesrepublik nicht mehr den gesteigerten sicherheits-, veranstaltungs-, theater- und haustechnischen Ansprüchen. Hinsichtlich der Frage, wie die Optimierung oder Nachfolge bestehender (Theater-) Häuser aussehen und finanziert werden kann, wird seit den 1990er-Jahren der Gebäudetyp des „multifunktionalen Kultur- und Kongresszentrums“ zunehmend planerisch wirksam. Die Dissertation fußt auf der These, dass die bauliche Einheit verschiedener Nutzungsbereiche eine überzeugende Alternative zum monofunktionalen Theater- und Kongressbau in ausgewählten Regionen ist. Im Rahmen der gebäudetypologischen Untersuchung werden konstante und variable Planungsparameter visualisiert und Empfehlungen für künftige architektonische Entwurfsprozesse ausgesprochen. Neben der Betrachtung historischer Vorläufer und der Rezeption zeitgenössischer Vergleiche sowie bestehender Theorieansätze werden anhand der Analyse von Beispielen entscheidende Kriterien zusammengetragen, auf denen der vorliegende Planungskatalog basiert. Methodisch ist die Dissertation in sechs Kapitel unterteilt: Die ersten drei Kapitel dienen der Erarbeitung von Grundlagen und der typologischen Einordnung. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt jedoch auf den Bestandsanalysen und Konzeptvorschlägen, wie sie im vierten und fünften Kapitel geboten werden. Im letzten Kapitel wird die aktuelle Diskussion im multifunktionalen Theater- und Kongressbau wiedergegeben und ergänzt. Die Dissertation stellt einen jungen, umstrittenen und zu optimierenden Gebäudetyp vor, dessen negatives Image – schwer greifbar, zu vielschichtig und unverbindlich zu sein – anhand eines neuen Definitions- und Systemvorschlags entkräftet wird. Sie zeichnet eine Tendenz nach, wodurch kommunale Entscheidungsträger und Arbeits- bzw. Projektgruppen im Bereich Theater- und Veranstaltungsbau zum Umdenken aufgerufen werden, und unterbreitet dabei einen alternativen Lösungsvorschlag, denn dem eindeutigen Bedarf an besonderen Kulturerlebnissen und -räumen steht ein vermehrter Bedarf an zielgruppenorientierten Veränderungen baulicher Gegebenheiten und Programmstrukturen gegenüber. Die Arbeit kann Planern und Entscheidungsträgern mittels der Erarbeitung objektivierter Kriterien und Parameter einen Schaffensprozess auf der Grundlage von kritisch reflektierten Positionen ermöglichen. Ausgehend vom Verbesserungsbedarf bei der Wirtschaftlichkeit von Theaterhäusern in Mittelstädten dient sie der fundierten Auseinandersetzung mit Multifunktionalität und Flexibilität bei zukünftigen Um- und Neubauvorhaben.The demand for a vibrant theatre culture confronts a necessity of architecture to react to culture-, sociopolitical-, economic- and technically oriented conditions: New entertainment needs of the population require the combination of different media and opportunities to experiment. Due to the present budgetary situation, the high subsidization of theatres is hardly affordable. Many of the structurally unsound buildings presently used as theatres, particularly in Germany’s eastern states, no longer meet the increased safety and event technology standards and other theatre-related technical and electrical requirements. Since the 1990s, the building type of the “multifunctional cultural and congress centre” has increasingly established itself as the architectural answer to the question of how to optimise or replace and finance existing theatre buildings. This dissertation is based on the thesis that the structural unity of different usable spaces provides a convincing alternative to monofunctional theatre and congress buildings in certain regions. As part of the building typology analysis, constant and variable planning parameters are visualised as well as recommendations for future architectural design processes given. In addition to examining historical predecessors and discussing contemporary comparisons and existing theoretical approaches, an analysis of examples provides the key criteria on which the present design catalogue is based. Methodically, this dissertation is devided into six chapters: The first three chapters serve as a development of basic principles and the typological classification. However, the main focus is on the examination of existing facilities and concept proposals as presented in chapters four and five. The last chapter reflects and complements the current discussion concerning multifunctional theatre and congress architecture. The dissertation introduces a new, controversial building type in need of optimisation, the negative image of which – being difficult to seize, overly complex, lacking commitment – is counterbalanced by proposing a new definition and system. It both traces a tendency, which appeals municipal decision-makers, workgroups and project teams for rethinking the existent position in the field of theatre and meeting architecture and it submits a possible alternative solution because the definite demand for particular cultural facilities and cultural experiences faces increased demand for the audience-oriented changes of structural circumstances and program structures. Consequently, by critically exploring and evaluating different positions, it develops unbiased criteria and parameters to assist planners and decision-makers in the creative process. Based on the need for improvement of economic efficiency of theatres in medium-sized towns, this thesis deals with the profound examination of multifunctionality and flexibility with regard to future conversions and erections of buildings
