    A Embrapa Semi-Árido esta completando 25 anos de atuação no agronegócio do semiárido, com o compromisso de promover o desenvolvimento rural desta região, procurando conferir eficiência produtiva ao setor agropecuário, reduzindo custos de produção e ajudando o semiárido a aumentar a oferta de alimentos pelo usa de tecnologias que apresentem viabilidade econômica, impactos sociais positivos e conservação ambiental. Foram muitos obstáculos e desafios que jamais nos fizeram recuar, sempre acreditando na viabilidade do nosso semiárido e que um conjunto de tecnologias e conhecimentos seria capaz de conferir a esta região uma sustentabilidade, desfazendo aquela imagem desalentadora de que e impossível vencer a seca. Apresentamos aqui um relato das principais atividades e conquistas realizadas nestes 25 anos, um retrato atual da nossa estrutura institucional, 0 que fazemos e o que temos a oferecer, na busca cada vez mais de uma maior aproximação com os segmentos reais e potenciais dos nossos produtos e serviços. A maturidade alcançada pela Embrapa Semi-Árido nos faz vislumbrar um futuro promissor para a região. Hoje, com a certeza do dever cumprido e a confiança conquistada, chegamos aos 25 anos reconhecendo que a tecnologia e o insumo para a construção de um futuro melhor só serão possíveis se acreditarmos, sobretudo, na vontade de vencer do nordestino. A Embrapa Semi-Árido foi criada pela Deliberação 0045/75, de 23 de junho de 1975. São 25 anos e um acervo de tecnologias e conhecimentos disseminados pelo semi-arido nordestino, incrementando processos agrícolas, econômicos e sociais sustentáveis e dinâmicos. E um tempo de trabalho e competência tecnico-cientffica que transformou incipientes expectativas sobre o potencial de desenvolvimento das áreas secas do Nordeste em programas de pesquisa e desenvolvimento consistentes e integrados a políticas de geração de emprego e renda dos governos municipais, estaduais e federal, e aos empreendimentos competitivos do agronegócio da região. Desde a sua criação, a Embrapa Semi-Árido vem estabelecendo linhas de pesquisa que gerem tecnologias e informações que viabilizem o negócio agrícola e preservem 0 meio ambiente da região

    Application of X-ray Microtomography to Quantify the Liquid Fraction of M2 Steel for Semi-solid Forming process

    Thixoforging, one variant of semi-solid metal processing in which the metallic alloys are processed at low liquid fraction (0.1< Fl < 0.3), is used to produce complex parts with high mechanical properties. Steel thixoforging faces more challenges as compared to that of low melting point materials due to high processing temperature and lack of understanding of the thermomechanical behavior of materials in the given conditions. It is crucial to study the microstructure in the semi-solid state to improve the understanding of the thixoforging process since the material behavior strongly depends on main parameters: the liquid fraction, its distribution as well as the coherence of the solid skeleton. The microstructure has a great influence on the viscosity of the material, on the flows and finally on the final shape and mechanical properties of the thixoforged parts. Here, the characterization of the volume fraction and distribution of liquid in the semi-solid state with high energy 3D X-ray microtomography is investigated on M2 steel grade as a ‘model’ alloy. The obtained results are compared to 2D observations using EDS technique in SEM on heated and quenched specimens. They show a good correlation making both approaches very efficient for the study of the liquid zones in the semi-solid state

    Since the nineties the quarter of Porta Palazzo in Turin undergoes a process of gentrification. Starting from two observations the author connects this urban process with some trade exchanges between a Berber shopkeeper of Moroccan nationality and his young Italian customers. He studies trade relations built up on misunderstandings. Some Italian customers « buy » products that, beyond their materiality, represent in their eyes the Maroccan culture or they refuse the transaction proposed to them on account of their own cultural and political values, namely their ecological principles against ivory trade. An ethnographic study of these « failures » helps better understand the trade space as a place where social relations are built up by actors with different trajectories who are brought together as a result of urban mutations

    Microstructure Evolution and Material Flow of Steel in Semi-solid Forming Process

    The present study aims to identify and characterize the development of microstructure and deformation characteristics of steel grades in semi-solid state which is affected by the change in morphologies of microstructure at high temperature. Thixoextrusion tests with different combinations of forming temperature and forming speed were performed. It was identified that several process parameters, such as initial billet and die temperatures or forming speed, affect thermal exchanges thereby influencing the microstructure evolution and material flow. Furthermore, 2D and 3D microstructure characterization was performed on the same sample which was partial remelted and quenched. Reconstructed 3D images were compared with the ones obtained with a Scanning Electron Microscope and an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry system. The good agreement between 2D SEM observations and 3D X-ray microtomography results makes these two techniques efficient to characterize steels in the semi-solid state

    Between a soft and a hard place: Southern European gentrification for short-term populations

    Focusing on a selected case study in a central area of the city of Turin in north-western Italy, the main aim of this article is to discuss fifth-wave gentrification processes within the framework of austerity urbanism in Southern European cities. Based on semi-structured interviews, participant observation and digital re-photography, the paper discusses how short-term populations are used as shock troops to sanitise and cleanse rebellious and poor neighbourhoods. More specifically, the contribution explores the material and symbolic dynamics, or what we might call the hard and soft interventions of gentrification, through which public-private partnerships attempt to produce cities for increasingly affluent (short-term) users and to erase conflicts and undesirable urban populations, also claiming an aesthetic dimension. The first part of the article situates the analysis within the literature on fifth-wave gentrification and the debate on Southern European cities, while the second part draws on semi-structured interviews and visual digital methods to examine hard and soft interventions of gentrification, namely evictions and real estate redevelopment on the one hand, and graffiti and mural art on the other, in a central, multi-ethnic area of Turin, where local authorities and private investors have teamed up to design an upscale restructuring for short-term populations

    Music as a Science of Man offers a philosophical and historical perspective on the intellectual representation of music in British Eighteenth century culture. From the field of natural philosophy, involving the science of sounds and acoustics, to the realm of imagination, involving resounding music and art, the branches of modern culture that were involved in the intellectual tradition of the science of music proved to be variously appealing to men of letters. Among these, a particularly rich field of investigation was the British philosophy of the mind and of human understanding, developed between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which looked at music and found in its realm a way of understanding human experience. Focussing on the world of sensation - trying to describe how the human mind could develop ideas and emotions by its means - philosophers and physicians often took their cases from art's products, be it music (sounds), painting (colours) or poetry (words as signs of sound conveying a meaning), thus looking at art from a particular point of view: that of the perceiving mind. The relationship between music and the philosophies of mind is presented here as a significant part of the construction of a Science of Man: a huge and impressive 'project' involving both the study of man's nature, to which - in David Hume's words - 'all sciences have a relation', and the creation of an ideal of what Man should be.     This dataset is from the research study that aims to diversify the production environment to de-risk production in these semi-arid ecologies. In this study, two approaches were used , i.e. (i) testing suitability of legume x legume and legume by cereal production systems; (ii) modeling the multiple cropping systems using APSIM crop simulation model to assess changes in resource base, resource use efficiencies, productivity and profitability of the different cropping systems.
