    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Some of the newly synthesized compounds showed Hsp90 inhibitory activity in preliminary biological assays

    The effectiveness of different conservation policies on the security of natural capital

    The maintenance of ecosystem goods and services, i.e. natural capital, is the basic guarantee of environmental security that aims to evaluate the level of threats to the actual flux of natural capital. This research concerns a natural protected area in southern Italy and aims at (1) assessing the temporal dynamics of land-use and land-cover mosaics, and indirectly of the natural capital they support, using the economic valuation of ecosystem goods and services as surrogate; and (2) ascertaining whether all the past environmental conservation policies have fostered the natural capital, reducing or increasing its security. To these purposes, orthorectified aerial photos, referring to July 1954, 1987, 1997 and 2004, were used to analyze the landscape change trajectory and the consequent change of natural capital flux. Surprisingly the results showed that not all environmental conservation policies have played an equal role in fostering the maintenance of natural capital. This research highlighted that the recognition of the natural value of a site according to the European Directives is not sufficiently effective for the conservation of the natural capital, while the presence of a local management authority setting some limits on human activities that cause landscape changes, can increase the security of natural capital. This is of particular relevance considering that in each European partner country there is a great number of areas that are recognized for their natural value but that, at the moment, are not protected at a local level with any measure aimed at mitigating human impact

    Nature-Based Solutions Planning for Urban Microclimate Improvement and Health: An Integrated Ecological and Economic Approach

    Nature-based Solutions (NbSs) play a pivotal role in mitigating the impact of microclimates on human well-being. The effectiveness of NbSs is contingent upon the synergy between natural capital, defined by the ecological structure and functions of the ecosystem, and human-derived capital, encompassing the economic investments required for implementation. This study introduces a decision-making framework designed to evaluate the impact of NbSs and advocate for optimal solutions for human health at the local scale, amalgamating ecological and economic assessments. Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) was chosen as a key urban parameter to assess the efficacy of NbSs in mitigating urban microclimates and enhancing human health. The PET analysis was conducted using ENVI-met 5.0.3 software across diverse urban scenarios in Gallipoli city, Italy. Integrated with a cost–benefit analysis of NbSs considering various investment scenarios, the study aimed to identify the most effective solution. Results indicated positive effects of NbSs in open spaces and around building blocks where the PET levels remained below 30 °C. Conversely, scenarios without NbSs exhibited PETs exceeding 40 °C, with peaks of 50 °C, posing potential risks to human health. Considering the social and economic benefits associated with PET mitigation, the cost–benefit analysis suggests that implementing NbSs using a mix of young and mature plants in the initial phase is advantageous compared to using only young plants. Thus, in establishing NbSs, it is crucial to consider not only the quantity of vegetation but also the strategic timing of implementation. In conclusion, our work offers an innovative framework that combines ecological and economic perspectives, providing valuable insights for decision-makers in urban planning and promoting the practical application of NbSs for enhanced human well-being

    Planning of urban green spaces: An ecological perspective on human benefits

    In the context of urban land-use growth and the consequent impacts on the environment, green spaces provide ecosystem services for human health. The ecosystem services concept synthesises human–environmental interactions through a series of combined components of biodiversity and abiotic elements, linking ecological processes and functions. The concept of green infrastructure (GI) in the urban context emphasises the quality and quantity of urban and peri-urban green spaces and natural areas. In dense urban contexts, the applications of GI are limited and not applied to the potential urban spaces such as roofs and gardens. Often, roofs are characterised by impermeable paved surfaces with negative effects on human well-being, whereas garden designs do not consider social needs and environmental interactions. The role of urban stressors or the urban context as a driving force or pressure of urban green space is not always well understood and employed in the planning of green spaces. This is partly due to a knowledge gap between different science disciplines that operate on different scales, from single processes of the plants (which focus on plant responses to environmental stresses affecting human well-being) to urban ecosystems (which focus on the biodiversity and urban space planning–human well-being relationship). This can create a paradox, as green spaces that are not adequately designed might not produce the expected effects. In this paper, an overview of benefits and limitations of applying the ecosystem services approach when designing green spaces is presented. The focus is on the main urban ecosystem services provided by green roofs and community gardens such as GI that can represent strategies to provide ecological and social multifunctionality to waterproofed surfaces connected to the buildings and low-exploited gardens being the main areas that affect dense urban settlements, and thus, increasing the ecosystem services in the urban environment, such as reducing the Urban Heat Island, as well as flooding events. Specifically, the paper highlights (i) feedback between ecological processes and functions that support ecosystem services, (ii) urban environmental stresses in relation to disservices that these can create for human well-being and (iii) key issues that should be considered in the planning and design of urban ecosystem services. Such a new vision of urban ecosystem services highlights the need to look at GI as an active part of the urban space design in the built environment

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
