Video Games and Violence : a cultural anthropological reflection on a complex discourse
The paper analyses the way in witch the representation of violence in video games is being thought of and discussed. Accompanied by an introduction to the present state of scientific positions concerning the topic, the analysis is based on qualitative interviews. By analyzing conversations with adolescent gamers, parents and teachers, the author tries to get to the roots of the different viewpoints and to understand the motivations for the different – often emotionally charged – positions. Reacting to the first result of the study – being, that young gamers do not really participate in the discussion – the main part concentrates on grownup non-gamers and their opinions, showing, that the discussion on video games is the newest form of a recurring discourse on youth and media. Furthermore it is shown, that this discourse is often lead without real engagement of the agents. In many cases there is neither an interest in opposing opinions, nor is there a willingness to accumulate any background-knowledge on the topic. All together one of the basic functions of this discourse seems to be to conceal other, more difficult discussions on youth-behavior, while for young gamers these games offer a chance to rebel against a liberal generation of parents.vorgelegt von Harald KobergAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des VerfassersZsfassung in dt. und engl.
