    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Clypeus with 2 setose punctures on each side bearing 2 setae each. Prothoracic carina broad, crenulated and extended to beyond anterior angle, pronotum fovea deep and broad or narrow. Elytral striae with regularly distributed, small asetose punctures. Setose punctures on 3 rd ventrite absent, present 4 th and 5 th ventrites. Apical portion of aedeagus symmetrically rounded with a strong twist to right of vertical axis. Dorso-apical portion of central spicule, greatly expanded. Left paramere basal lobe rectangular, arm and apical lobe relatively large, and with setation along apical ½ of ventral edge. Description. Length 19–26 mm. Colour black. Head, body broad and flattened. Microsculpture of frons and vertex absent. Vertexal groove narrow, well defined for entire length. Form of microsculpture on anterior area of clypeus, sulcate. Clypeus with 2 setose punctures on each side bearing 2 setae each. Form of lobes of the mentum, square. Submentum constriction, narrow with greater than or equal to 6 setae. Prothoracic carina is broad, crenulated and extended to beyond anterior angle. Pronotum broad and flattened, posterior lateral sinuation parallel or slightly angled outward, pronotal fovea deep and may be broad or narrow, rugose microsculpture may be present laterally on pronotal disc. Elytra broad and flat, striae with regularly distributed, small asetose punctures, intervals slightly convex. One or two setose punctures present on mesocoxa, setose punctures of metacoxa absent. Setose punctures of 3 rd ventrite absent, present on 4 th and 5 th ventrites. Apical portion of aedeagus symmetrically rounded with a strong twist to right of vertical axis. Dorso-apical portion of central spicule, greatly expanded. Left paramere basal lobe rectangular, arm and apical lobe relatively large, and with setation along apical ½ of ventral edge. Comments. This species was described by Broun (1923) as species no. 4256. The name was based on two specimens, one damaged, from Tokaanu. Mecodema exitiosus was incorrectly synonymised by Britton (1949) under M. occiputale (see above). The northeastern most geographical range (Kaimai Ranges / Bay of Plenty) of Mecodema occiputale overlaps with the ranges of M. curvidens and M. atrox; these three species have very similar external morphology but are widely separated phylogenetically.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Elytral striae with small regularly distributed asetose punctures. Setose punctures absent on 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th ventrites. Apical portion of aedeagus symmetrically rounded with a moderate twist to right of vertical axis. Dorso-apical portion of central spicule, greatly expanded. Basal lobe of left paramere rectangular, arm medium and apical lobe relatively small, with setation along apical ¾ of ventral edge. Description. Length 16–22 mm. Colour black. Head and body convex. Microsculpture of frons and vertex absent. Vertexal groove shallow laterally, narrow and defined middle. Form of microsculpture on anterior area of clypeus, sulcate, clypeus with a single setose puncture bearing 2 setae. Form of lobes of the mentum, square. Submentum constriction broad, with greater than or equal to 6 setae. Prothoracic carina narrow, crenulated and extended to anterior angle. Pronotum broad but convex, posterior lateral sinuation angle parallel or slightly angled outward. Pronotal fovea deep and broad, rugose microsculpture may be present laterally on pronotal disc. Elytra narrow and highly convex, striae with small regularly distributed asetose punctures. A single setose puncture present on mesocoxa, absent on metacoxa. Setose punctures of 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th ventrites absent. Apical portion of aedeagus symmetrically rounded with a moderate twist to right of vertical axis. Dorso-apical portion of central spicule, greatly expanded. Left paramere basal lobe rectangular, arm medium and apical lobe relatively small, with setation along apical ¾ of ventral edge. Comments. This species was named for one specimen from Te Aroha described by Britton (1949). The specimen is in poor condition, and missing the right maxillary palpus, antennomeres 2–11 from the right antenna and antennomeres 5–11 from the left antenna. The type locality for this species is the summit of Mt Te Aroha, Waikato. However, six years (2004–2010) of continuous pitfall trapping has failed to catch additional specimens of M. pluto on or near the summit of Mt Te Aroha. Anecdotal collecting evidence suggests that this species is associated with kohekohe (Dysoxylum spectabile) forest on the mid to lower slopes of the mountain and found rarely in the cloud forest around the summit. Comments. This species was described by Britton (1949) based on a single male specimen. The specimen is in poor condition with antennomeres 6–11 of right antennae missing; last 3 tarsal segments of right mid-leg and left fore-leg missing; all tarsal segments missing from right and left hind-legs; entire left mid-leg missing; genitalia card mounted and pinned with specimen. Mecodema atrox is found on the lower slopes of the Coromandel Ranges, northern Kaimai Ranges, is sister species to M. aoteanoho (Great Barrier Is.) and M. haunoho (Little Barrier Is.), and along with M. occiputale, is basal to this monophyletic group (fig. 5). The scarcity of specimens may be due to the ruggedness of the region in which this species is found; as a result, the Department of Conservation has listed this species as endangered and declining due to habitat loss (McGuinness 2002). Distribution. North Island: Bay of Plenty (BP), Coromandel and northern Kaimai Ranges. Type locality: Tauranga.
