    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Investigation of Neonatal Hookworm (Uncinaria sp.) Infection on Immune Variation in South American Fur Seal Pups (Arctocephalis australis)

    Although immunity is highly variable among animals, individuals can have relatively consistent immune responses over time, leading to distinct immune phenotypes. Immune phenotypes are largely influenced by non-heritable factors such as exposure to pathogens and commensal organisms. Nematode parasites are ubiquitous pathogens known to influence susceptibility to viral and other intracellular infections and allergic disease, but their role on the immune phenotype of wild animals is not well established. Using South American fur seals (SAFS, Arctocephalus australis) as a natural model, we investigated the influence of neonatal hookworm (Uncinaria spp.) infections on immune phenotype. We hypothesized that hookworm-mediated immune responses were non-uniform, and hookworm-specific properties were a probable cause for this variation. Fur seal pups (n=30) were serially captured weekly from birth until approximately 80 days of age for physical examination and collection of morphometric data, fecal and blood samples. Serum cytokines were assessed using a Luminex® Bead-Based Assay, and comparisons were made against hookworm fecal egg counts, and hematological and biochemical analytes. At final capture, the pups were stimulated with a T cell mitogen injected in the dermis and CD3+ T cells were measured in pre and 12-hour post stimulation skin biopsy samples. Our study results revealed both intra-individual variability in serum IFNᵧ concentrations over time, as well as inter-individual variability with diverging patterns of serum IFNᵧ. Ten SAFS pups showed persistently high or increased IFNᵧ concentrations over time while 13 showed decreasing IFNᵧ concentrations over time. The remaining 7 never had positive fecal egg counts and served as hookworm-free controls. These IFNᵧ patterns were not associated with hookworm burden, markers of anemia or systemic inflammation. When evaluating clinical status, the decreasing IFNᵧ group was twice as likely (46 %) to be clinically ill compared to the persistent-increasing group (20 %), although the difference was not significant. There was no difference in mitogen-stimulated CD3+ T cells in either group. These results suggest that variability in immune phenotype in hookworm-infected SAFS pups is not directly related to hookworm burden or pathogenic properties, however differences in IFNᵧ response may have clinical relevance

    Health surveillance in muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) and Francisella tularensis surveillance in rodents and lagomorphs in Ontario, Canada

    Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) populations have declined in parts of North America, yet underlying health factors that may be associated with this decline remain poorly understood. This study aimed to conduct health surveillance of Ontario muskrats through pathological evaluation and select disease screening, with a particular focus on Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of tularemia. In addition, we reviewed reports from rodents and lagomorphs submitted to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative between 2018–2023, to identify cases of F. tularensis in Ontario. We examined 149 harvested muskrats collected in two seasons, September 2021 to May 2022 (Trapping season 1) and October 2022 to May 2023 (Trapping season 2), identifying frequent lesions in the tongue, lungs, skeletal muscle, liver, and stomach. Findings included lymphoplasmacytic inflammation, protozoan and fungal infections (e.g., Sarcocystis spp., Emmonsia spp.), and parasitic infections with the zoonotic helminths such as Capillaria spp (syn. Calodium spp). and Echinococcus multilocularis. These findings were not influenced by trapping location or body condition. These results suggest chronic immune activation in muskrats potentially linked to infectious stressors. No cases of F. tularensis were detected in the harvested muskrat samples; however, we identified F. tularensis in four wild mammals, including three muskrats and, notably, one eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) —the first such report in Canada. Key limitations included postmortem artifact due to freezing, lack of molecular or serological confirmation for most pathogens, and seasonal/geographic sampling biases. Despite these constraints, the findings highlight the value of integrated pathological and molecular approaches to wildlife health surveillance and underscore the importance of muskrats in monitoring zoonotic risks. Broader, year-round surveillance and enhanced diagnostic tools are needed to better understand health drivers in muskrat populations and inform public health strategies.2026-07-2
