    Professione: Assistente Sociale

Social service and disability in immigrant families: professionals views and strategies

Immigrant families with a member with disability represent a social group particularly at risk: their vulnerability, in fact, depends on both the disability and the migration experience. The paper presents a research work starting from a scoping study (Arksey & O'Malley, 2005), realized by analysing 94 scientific works collected through Scopus with the aim of highlighting the specific problems which immigrant families with disabilities have to deal with, what to do and the culturally sensitive intervention strategies effectively used by the services. Often, they lack informal support networks, they have social and/or economic disadvantages, they do not know how the educational, social and health institutions work. Therefore, they live in a multi-problem situation that requires health and social services to activate personalized assistance that takes into account cultural difference. Results from a quanti-qualitative research study conducted in the context of the Adult Disability Service in Padova will be also presented

Gender and Affectivity Awareness in Kindergarten: An Educational Pathway for Boys, Girls and Their Teachers

The issue of gender identity education is at the heart of learning processes related to the equality-disparity dichotomy, positioned longitudinally between the various levels of education and generating broad debate on educational and social levels. Gender and affectivity education appears fundamental to promote positive relational interactions among young people, freed from stereotypical models that are often internalised in the cultural circles to which they belong. In the Italian educational context, there are few concrete teaching experiences on these topics, despite research showing the importance of presenting these topics from earliest childhood. This paper presents a research-action pilot project involving 40 four-year-old boys and girls and their teachers at two municipal kindergartens in north-eastern Italy. The educational pathway showed that boys and girls clearly distinguish between male and female, although the distinction does not concretely affect their choice of characteristics, attitudes, preferences and emotions. As concerns educational figures, the study revealed a significant training need, involving the teachers themselves in understanding and deconstructing gender stereotypes

    No full text

    No full text
Work-life balance is a central question in post-modern societies characterized by diffusion of dual-earner family model, extension of life and aging process, and the increase of adults with duty of care. In Italy, there are limits in the responses to work-life balance that lead to reflect on the role that Regions can act to create spaces of thought and action for new solutions. The research presented investigates this role through the study of the Veneto program Alliances for the Family. The results, balancing the limits and the potential, show how the projects included in this framework have contributed to an activation, if not of interventions, at least of re- flections and knowledge on reconciliation, and it is hoped that the projects and initiated changes have a chance to settle and thrive

Factors affecting Decisions of the Italian Social Worker in Child Protection

    No full text
Services dedicated to child protection are among the most complex and difficult to manage for the Public Authorities and social workers involved. Intervention measures for the protection of minors and support for their families are burdened by undeniable problems, due to both the obvious complexity of the issues dealt with, and lack of available resources. The social workers, in accordance with the national and regional laws in the child protection area, are endowed with a wide margin of discretion, allowing them to respond to the specific circumstances of each individual minor and family. However, this also results in a lack of clear, shared procedures for the choice of the most appropriate measures to be taken for the welfare of minors that risk to create big discrepancy and inequality between territory and territory, even when very close. The aim of the present study was to identify similarities and differences in the factors that influence these decisions on minors and their families, through comparison between professionals, using the focus group technique. The study involved 22 social workers, all working in child protection services in 3 large local councils in the North-East of Italy. The results highlight some common values but a lack of shared practices, with a marked displacement of decision making onto individuals rather than institutions, and an approach that is largely experience-based and intuitive rather than scientific and analytic

Family support as a working style in child protection in Italy: A comparative study on social workers’ child welfare attitudes.

Comparative studies on child protection decision-making highlight the implications and determinants of differences in child welfare systems internationally and reinforce discussions regarding child protection practices and family support when a child is exposed to inadequate parental care. To date, Italian child protection studies have highlighted a system characterised by a strong degree of variability related to the absence of practices shared nationally. Differently, this comparative study focuses more on similarities within the Italian context, seeking to understand how they influence practices. The opinions of 188 Italian social workers with respect to the substantiation of maltreatment, risk assessment and intervention recommendations were compared with the results of a recent study involving practitioners in Israel, Northern Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands. The main outcomes show that Italian social workers prefer a family support orientation, meaning that children are usually removed from their home only if necessary and generally with the aim of reunification with their families. The study also reveals that Italian professionals are more in favour of residential care than foster care

Time in Adolescence. Validating Zimbardo’s Stanford Time Perspective Inventory using a sample of Italian adolescents

    No full text
In this study we explore the psychometric characteristics of Zimbardo’s Stanford Time Perspective Inventory, using a statistically representative sample made up of 1517 Italian adolescents, aged 15-19 years. The results show marked differences with respect to preceding studies conducted in the United States and Italy. In particular, the scale of the present forms a single dimension, losing its subdivision into two distinct dimensions, hedonistic and fatalistic. The two scales presented in the factorial analysis, present and future, show a good degree of internal consistence and discriminating validity. The results will be interpreted according to the individual differences present in the sample and to the cultural and economic changes now occurring at this specific moment in history
