George Seferis' poetics: loss and the language of Topos
This thesis offers a detailed examination of the representation of topos, or homeland, in the poetry of George Seferis from an interdisciplinary perspective. It argues that Seferis’ poetry is a response to loss, and in particular the loss of a homeland in Asia Minor. The argument is divided into two parts. The first, entitled “Crisis and Response,” deals with Seferis’ personal biography and the subject of loss, while the second, “Allegories of Topos,” treats three distinct themes that illustrate and allegorize Seferis’ poetics of topos: dystopia, historical poetics, and the poet’s interpretation of Homer. A concluding chapter examines Seferis’ Cyprus poems and the similarities between Cyprus and Asia Minor. Ultimately, this study sheds new light on one of twentieth century Greece’s most iconic modernist poets by presenting a new, place-based reading that illuminates the relationship between nationalism and personal topography.<p>Doctorat en Langues et lettresinfo:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublishe
"Kings and Poets: Self-Irony in Selected Poems by George Seferis and Derek Mahon"
The chapter compares the issue of (self-)irony in the poems of the Irish poet Derek Mahon and the Modern Greek Nobelist poet George Seferis, mainly in Mahon's "Archaeologist" and Seferis's "King of Asine"
The universalization of the poetry of George Seferis: The significance of English translations
The English socio-cultural context was crucial to the dissemination of the work of George Seferis in Europe. Early translations appeared in both French and English, but it was the English versions that propelled Seferis toward international recognition and the Nobel Prize, and gave rise to translations into more peripheral literatures such as Spanish. The wide social circle Seferis enjoyed in the English-speaking world was a key factor in his early success in the United Kingdom. Other determinants were British intellectuals’ empathy for the Greeks during the Colonels’ dictatorship and their liking for modern poetry similar to that of T. S. Eliot.</jats:p
George Seferis and his diary
This doctoral thesis studies the first five volumes of the Yiorgos Seferis’ journal “Days (1925-1951)”, the publication of which had been completed by the time of its defense. The thesis’ aim is both, placing Seferi’s journal within its European environment, and highlighting its introspective character. Seeking the man behind his writing, the thesis focuses on autobiography, with regular references to Seferis’ poetry and other writings. The first chapter is an introduction to the history of journal writing. By arguing that Seferis’ journal is a form of a personal diary, the thesis begins with describing the general features of journal writing, to finally explore the specific mode of writing a personal diary. The history of literature is used primarily here as it is reflected in the western culture, especially in its autobiographical texts. The second chapter presents a number of personal diaries from the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing mainly on Seferis’ documented reading preferences. A small part of the chapter is devoted to Greek autobiographical writing. The approach used is principally comparative, within the specific field of autobiographical expression and the wider scope of the western culture. The third chapter deals with the issue of introspection: after a general introduction which examines introspection within the framework of literature and autobiographical expression, the thesis focuses on Seferis’ introspective writing step by step, following the clues suggested by the journal itself. The method of periodization allows this part of the thesis to highlight key points in the life and self-consciousness of the author. At this point, the study is based on theoretical studies on introspection in relation to writing, but also on a historical approach of Seferis’ biography, after considering the man within the specific terms of his life. At the same time, the investigation aims at evaluating the attempted interventions made by Seferis himself on his first draft, in order to consider the literary qualities of his work. Methodologically, the analysis is based on comparative readings of the journal and the then unpublished correspondence of the poet. The thesis highlights key points of Seferis’ introspection, which illustrate significant stages in his creative career. The thesis ends with conclusions and an index of real and fictitious characters in Seferis’ journal, therefore suggesting the potential for further research.Η διατριβή μελετά τους πρώτους πέντε τόμους του ημερολογίου του Γ.Σεφέρη με τον τίτλο Μέρες, (1925-1951), των οποίων η έκδοση είχε πραγματοποιηθεί ως την ολοκλήρωση και την υποστήριξή της (1983).
The diaries of George Seferis: a contribution to the study of european diaries of the twentieth century
[Δε διατίθεται περίληψη]The diaries 1925-1960 of the greek poet George Seferis present an interesting study object as to the modalities of the subjectivity and their expression in the autobiographical context. The limits of intimity, the organization of time and the art of the reference are closely related to the conception of the diary as autobiographical genre. The concepts of self and his own poetical work mark the character of Seferis' diaries in so far as they are the documents of the private experience which shows for Seferis the only legal way to the interpretation of his poetry.Seferis' respect not only for the diary but for all autobiographical documents is manifested in his lectures and in his reflections on the diaries of others: among other diarists represent Stendhal, Amiel, above all Gide personalities who celebrated the genre and whose attitudes concerned the diary as an autobiographical act Seferis cites and comments.Like by most modern diarists the diary for Seferis is not a compensation but an autonomous genre, an act of communication with him self as well as with the public. The forms of this communication closely related to the individuality of the author, still presuppose a concrete historical and cultural background
The poem “Helen” (1953) of George Seferis: notes about the date and circunstances of its composticion, its classical background, its significance in the Seferis poetry and life, its universal claim for peace.
Modernist poetics of distance: George Seferis and Ezra Pound
This thesis offers the first full-length comparative study of George Seferis and Ezra Pound. The analysis begins by establishing, in the first chapter, a field of research by looking at the ways in which Pound was read, translated and received in Greece from 1935 onwards, and, in doing so, maps out the important Greek publications on Pound. Prominent among the discussed poets and translators, it is argued, Seferis showed a deeper affinity with Pound and developed a significantly similar modernist poetics at once singularly Greek and aligned with the Anglo-American example. This thesis, then, proceeds to elucidate the affinities between the two poets through a detailed comparative reading. The second chapter offers an in-depth analysis of the two poets’ views on translation theory and practice, building on Hugh Kenner’s concept of ‘touching distance’. The third chapter concentrates on the two poets’ responses to place in both their poetry and their travel writings, by problematising the conceptual ‘mobility’ of place at work in their writings. Through these explorations, this project offers insights on both poets individually and helps to broaden current understandings of their poetry and poetics comparatively, ultimately demonstrating that Seferis’ modernism, despite being articulated in Greek, was never far removed from high modernist poetics as represented by Pound
