    this document. We hope that others find ViTAN helpful and welcome your feedback. Also, we welcome additions and refinements to the tool. 2. Installation After having downloaded the ViTAN tool (see Section A for details), the file has to be untared and unzipped: tar zxvf ViTANv11.tar.gz This process generated a subdirectory called ViTAN. Be sure that you have the following files in the subdirectory (dates and user names are di#erent, file names are the same): 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i ng 178653 Feb 19 18 : 14 100- . f i g 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i ng 177427 Feb 1 9 1 8 : 1 4 1 0 0 . f i g 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i ng 22142 Feb 17 08 : 57 100- . i nput 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i ng 22542 Feb 1 7 0 8 : 5 7 1 0 0 . i nput 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i ng 22948 Feb 17 08 : 57 100+ . i nput 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i ng 188527 Feb 19 18 : 14 100- . j pg 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i n g 149096 Feb 1 9 1 8 : 1 4 1 0 0 . j pg 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i n g 144617 Feb 19 18 : 14 100- . pd f 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i n g 144113 Feb 1 9 1 8 : 1 4 1 0 0 . pd f 1 p s e e l i ng p s e e l i n g 102705 Feb 19 18 : 14 100- . png 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 79881 Feb 1 9 1 8 : 1 4 1 0 0 . png 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 39428 Feb 1 7 1 8 : 0 2 1 . f i g 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 187242 Feb 1 7 0 8 : 5 7 3 0 0 . i nput 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 114376 Feb 1 9 1 8 : 1 4 3 0 . f i g 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 35007 Feb 19 18 : 14 30+ . f i g 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 2675 Feb 1 7 0 8 : 5 9 3 0 . i nput 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 2498 Feb 17 08 : 59 30+ . i nput 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 172180 Feb 1 9 1 8 : 1 4 3 0 . j pg 1 p s e e l i n g p s e e l i n g 100066 Feb 19 18 : 14 ..

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
