Günümüz Türkiye’sinde böylesi tahlillerin sosyolojikçözümlemelerimizi zenginleştirici etkisini vurgulamak, bu tezin amacıdır.SUMMARYThis thesis aims to focus on the role of art, especially that of literature, regardingthe development of humans as culture breeding entities, the way in which it is affected by social interactions and transformations, and also how it affects them as well as focusing on its value in terms of cultural persistence and enrichment by working within the scope of Nurdan Gürbilek’s essays. In this study, by deciphering the sociological analysis which feeds her writing style on literature, it is attempted to grasp both human condition in the modern world and the cultural climate in Turkey, and evaluate the author’s cultural studies which served to improve her interdisciplinary cooperation. Authors are the voices of past and potential future as well as the time period in which they live. Reading puts as much value and meaning to texts as writing does. Literary works will be the witnesses of an history that is not written, a past that is not reminisced. Every author is a carrier, narrator and commentator of the culture and language they live in. On the basis of this conception, all of Nurdan Gürbilek’s works serve as a satisfying response to our desire and curiosity of understanding societies (within the psychological and sociological analysis of literary works, authors and novel characters). It is the purpose of this thesis to emphasize the enriching effects of such analyses in today’s Turkey regarding our sociological decipherment

Çolakoğlu, Nurdan (Arel Author)Two-sided markets are the new issues in economic theory and have been studied since the beginning of the 21th century. Barriers to entry are also important to provide a balanced full competition condition in markets. Generally, incumbent firms don’t want new rivals because new rivals usually mean decreases in profits provided that firms seek profit maximizing. However, some of the previous studies show that profit maximizing firms can find unprofitable to set up barriers to entry in two-sided markets. The aim of this study is to confirm these studies by conducting a research in a shopping mall in Istanbul. To this end, we prepared a survey and applied it in this area. We hope that the results are pioneering for further studies

Ayrancı, Evren (Arel Author), Çolakoğlu, Nurdan (Arel Author)The dual issues of leadership features and innovativeness constitute an important component of the related literature along with the studies focusing on the connections between these two. The current study considers this connection with the notion that innovativeness should be included as a feature of a leader, but it also moves further by trying to understand how leadership orientations and innovativeness are patterned together within the leadership concept. To this end, the authors of the current study collect data from the top managers of businesses in the Istanbul Leather Organized Industrial Zone and perform inferential analyses. It is discovered that leadership orientations have three and that innovativeness has five distinct factors. A structural equation model that includes all of these factors together under the concept of leadership is proposed. Although all of the innovativeness factors are found to be integrated within this model, only one factor for leadership orientations – people orientation – can be integrated within the model. In other words, innovativeness can entirely be included within the proposed model of leadership, but leadership orientations can only partially be included. Most of the innovativeness factors are positively and moderately related to leadership, albeit assertiveness is not considerably favored. Overall, the emphasis appears to be on people oriented and innovative leadership

Dilek, Serkan (Arel Author), Çolakoğlu, Nurdan (Arel Author)Global financial crisis which began with high default rates on subprime and adjustable rate mortgages, developed in 2007 and became visible after the crash of Lehman Brothers in 2008. Like other financial crises, it caused significant declines in consumer wealth. Although it started in US mortgage and state market, its effects are held all over the world. Generally, rich people have more ways to protect their assets than poor people do. So the negative effects of financial crisis (such as decreasing income) are lower for rich persons. One of the most important questions, which arose after the global financial crisis, asked if the burden of recession is felt by all people in the world or region, equally. The aim of this study is to reveal the effects of financial crisis on Turkish university students with different income levels when Turkish economy is collapsing. So we can learn if income distribution between students is deteriorated or not. To realize this aim, the survey which includes 36 questions are applied to students in a private university vocational school of economics and administrative sciences programmes and in a public university school of EASF economics programme. The survey is analyzed by SPSS 16.00 statistical package programme

Çolakoğlu, Nurdan (Arel Author), Ayrancı, Evren (Arel Author)This study considers intellectual capital based on the assumption that this capital, which possesses social aspects, is related to the emotional capacities (i.e., emotional intelligence) of an organization’s members. A literature review indicates that this relationship has been previously noted and studied, and researchers agree that the emotional intelligence of the members of an organization affects the organization’s intellectual capital. Based on this analysis, this relationship is examined in the Turkish business context. Data are collected from top managers, who can affect the intellectual capital oftheir businesses and who, as human beings, are emotional. Thus, in this study, the emotional intelligence of top managers and their opinions regarding the intellectual capital of their businesses are considered to be related, with interesting results. When all of the factors of emotional intelligence that are likely to affect opinions regarding intellectual capital are examined using a multivariate model, the effect of emotional intelligence is revealed. Primarily, three factors of the emotional intelligence—empathy and communication skill, self-awareness and sociability—affect the participants’ opinions regarding the intellectual capital of their businesses. Univariate models are used to evaluate the effect of each emotional intelligence factor on the participants’ opinions regarding the intellectual capitalof their businesses. Empathy and communication skills affect opinions about the quality of human capital. Self-awareness affects opinions about the organizational commitment of workers. Sociability can affect opinions about information technology and information sharing. In summary, emotional intelligence affects opinions about human capital quality, information technology and information sharing
