    No full text
In the paper we reply to some criticisms raised by Sergio Parrinello to the book "Pasinetti and the Classical-Keynesians" (C.U.P.2021) edited by Enrico Bellino and Sebastiano Nerozzi. The main topics raised in the paper focus on some interpretative issues concerning Pasinetti's model of structural economic dynamics

The Political Economy of Luigi Pasinetti

For many decades, we have been closely associated with Pasinetti’s research, though in different ways and in different capacities due to our belonging to different academic age cohorts. Through all those years, we have had many opportunities to discuss with him his contributions to economic theory, which we have always found greatly inspiring, even when following research tracks different from his. In a nutshell, we could say we all share with Pasinetti a deep commitment to the structural dynamics approach to economic theory and political economy. Our close personal and intellectual acquaintancewith Pasinetti makes it difficult for us to write a standard comprehensive introduction, which would have to consider the manifold areas of our collaboration with him and involvement with his lines of research. On many occasions, we wrote essays dealingwith specific features of his approach to economic theory. For this reason, we decided to focus our attention on what are, in our view, Pasinetti’s key contributions to theory-building and to highlight the unifying train of thought flowing through all of them

This paper presents and reproduces an unpublished oral history interview given by Jacob Viner in 1953. The interview released by Viner for the Columbia Oral History Project gives us a valuable opportunity to throw light on his advisory activity during the New Deal Era. In our introduction we attempt to make a critical appraisal of Viner's reminiscences and to state the contribution they can provide to our general knowledge of the period. In addition, we also attempt to find out some biographical and interpretative elements useful to understand Viner’s own vision and his contribution to important economic policy processes during the New Deal.

Doing Math in Mussolini’s Pocket: Ernesto Rossi and Fascist Public Finance (1926-1930)

bstract · This essay deals with the brief but intense collaboration of Ernesto Rossi with the «Ri forma Sociale», a prestigious journal of economics and social sciences founded by Francesco Saverio Nitti in 1894 and directed by Luigi Einaudi since 1908. Between 1926 and 1930, Rossi authored seven long essays on issues of public fnance, applied economics, and economic statistics that have been relatively neglected by historiography. The rereading of these contributions allows us to illuminate some central moments in his training as an economist. This essay focuses on four articles he devoted to a deep analysis of the Italian budget and public debt, recalculating public revenues and expenses, with relation both to the accrual-based balance and the cash-based balance, in the attempt to make them comparable year by year, despite relevant changes introduced in those years in accounting prac tices and norms. The highly technical character of this analysis did not hide the political message underpinning Rossi’s fndings highlighting some signifcant inconsistencies and shortcomings in the fscal policy pursued by Mussolini’s government. Its declared aims were to attain a balanced budget, to reduce and consolidate the huge public debt, to secure monetary stability and, last but not least, improve the transparency of public accounting practices. Rossi’s deep and accurate revision of the public budget showed how these diferent but closely interlinked objectives, crucial for attaining and maintaining middle-class consensus to the regime, were often betrayed, or, at least, pursued with little determination and consistency

Building up a multilateral strategy for the United States: Alvin Hansen, Jacob Viner and the Council on Foreign Relations (1939-1945)

Between 1943 and 1947 a new economic order was founded, which aimed at implementing multilateral trade, international monetary cooperation and economic stability supported by government intervention. This paper describes the contribution provided to this process by a group of American economists working under the auspices of the Council on Foreign Relations and in close connection with the State Department. Since 1939 the Economic and Financial Group led by Jacob Viner and Alvin H. Hansen played an important role in designing strategic choices which concerned American economic interests in the post-war world and in preparing the ground for the establishment of such multilateral agencies as the IMF, the IBRD and the ITO-GATT system. In assessing Viner’s and Hansen’s views and proposals, this paper shows how different and competing approaches to economic theory and policy compromised and converged in supporting this outcome.Jacob Viner, Alvin Hansen, Bretton Woods, Council on Foreign Relations, Post-War Planning; State Department.
