Persistence ed effect of rotenone on oil quality in two Italian olive cultivars

    No full text
The aims of this work are to assess the persistence of rotenone in oil and drupes of olive plants of cultivars Nocellara del Belice (NB) and Cassanese (CA), and to compare the quality of oils from rotenone-treated and untreated plants. Samples of drupes and oil were analyzed at 2, 12, 22 and 30 days after treatment. Rotenone levels in drupes of treated plants declined by about 50% after 22 days from treatment (0.037 mg kg-1 in NB and 0.039 mg kg-1 in CA), whereas the respective values in the oil were higher (0.209 mg kg-1 in NB and 0.229 mg kg-1 in CA) and had a lower decay half-life (4.02 days in NB and 4.71 days in CA). For both cultivars, no significant differences in oil physicochemical and nutritional parameters were found between the two treatments. The panel test of oils extracted after 22 days did not reveal significant differences in unpleasant aromatic notes nor defects between the two treatments. Our results confirm that serious doubts remain about the safety and healthiness of oils extracted from drupes treated with rotenone. This information could assess the real risk in the use of this product for plant protection in olive growing

Roux-en-y gastric bypass as revisional surgery

    No full text
The roux-en-y gastric bypass (rygB) is a worldwide-performed procedure as primary surgery, and as conversional procedure after complications and/or failure of other bariatric procedures. rygB can be performed as revisional surgery after adjustable gastric banding, vertical banded gastroplasty, sleeve gastrectomy and one anastomosis gastric bypass. each of these revisional procedures may be technically challenging, and accurate preoperative work-up and operative planning is required. if correctly performed, rygB as revisional procedure is associated with satisfying outcomes and is indicated in the treatment of insufficient weight loss and postoperative complications of a primary bariatric procedure - such as chronic leak or gastroesophageal reflux after sleeve gastrectomy. The present article analyzes the most important indications, technical points and tips and tricks to safely perform rygB as a secondary procedure

From Nissen Fundoplication to Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass to Treat Both GERD and Morbid Obesity

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common in obese individuals in around 30%. While fundoplication is the treatment of choice in non-obese individuals with GERD resistant to medical treatment, the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) is the most effective option in the setting of morbid obesity to treat at the same time both GERD and obesity. Methods: We present the case of a 31-year-old woman with a BMI of 37 kg/m2 who underwent an open Nissen fundoplication in 2010 and surgical revision in 2012 with redo of the Nissen fundoplication. She consulted for dysphagia and obesity complicated by invalidating arthrosis. A barium swallow showed esophageal dilatation and cardial stenosis. Manometry revealed incomplete waves and high pressure at the lower esophageal sphincter. We decided to convert the Nissen fundoplication to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Results: In this video, we show how to revise Nissen fundoplication to RYGB. The intervention starts by complete dissection of the gastric valve and the hiatal region from right to left. Then, a short gastric pouch is created taking care to exclude the gastric fundus that is also partially resected. We perform a hand-sewn gastro-jejunal anastomosis slightly larger than for conventional bypass. A RYGB with 50-cm bilio-pancreatic and 150-cm alimentary limb is then performed. Conclusions: Conversion of Nissen fundoplication to RYGB allows treatment of dysphagia, which may represent a complication of the fundoplication, and is effective for management obesity and GERD. In this video we show important technical steps of this procedure

Materials recovery from end-of-life wind turbine magnets

Neodymium–iron–boron permanent magnets are increasingly used in green energy technologies, such as wind turbines and electric vehicles. In the near future, an increasing amount of magnets will reach their end-of-life stage, andtherefore, it is imperative to develop proper recycling routes aimed at the valorization of this waste fraction. In this work, a room temperature hydrometallurgical process was developed aimed at the recovery of both iron and rare earths contained in end-of-life wind turbine magnets. The process is based on a leaching step with nitric acid, followed by two precipitation steps and calcination. Iron hydroxide(III) and rare earth oxide with purity grade equal to 98% and 99%, respectively, were obtained. Based on these results, a process flowsheet was proposed for industrial implementation

The midbrain slice preparation. An in vitro model to select potential anti-parkinsonian drugs?

    No full text
Abstract. Most anti-parkinsonian drugs produce a dopamine-like effect on single dopaminergic neurons. Using electrophysiological recordings, this effect is observed as an inhibition of the spontaneous firing activity. The firing activity of dopaminergic cells throughout dopamine-mediated mechanisms is inhibited not only by dopamine direct agonists but also by substances that increase the release or synthesis, or block the uptake or reduce degradation of dopamine in the brain. Here we propose the electrophysiological approach on dopaminergic neurons in in vitro slice preparation as a preliminary tool for selecting new potential anti-parkinsonian agents, before they are tested in more complex animal models

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
