Episode 21: Day 1 of the 2022 FHS Annual Symposium Event
The Department of History’s Sebastian Garcia attended this year’s annual FHS symposium event which is hosted every October at the University of Central Florida. Being one of the most significant historical events of the year for Florida history and culture, Sebastian wanted to capture the essence of this unique and imperative event by doing on-the-spot, raw, “quick chat” interviews with as many people that were involved with this event—from directors to panelists—as possible. This episode of Knights Historycast is composed of the several quick chat interviews that Sebastian was able to do from day 1 of this incredible and significant event. The following are timestamps to each of the individual interviews that Sebastian conducted during this event: Dr. Ben Brotemarkle, Executive Director of the Florida Historical Society (4:56) Dr. Connie Lester, Associate Professor of History at UCF, Director of the RICHES Digital Archiving Program, Editor of the Florida Historical Quarterly, and Program Chair of the 2022 FHS Annual Symposium Event (8:09) Dr. Christine Ardalan, Author, and Adjunct Professor of History at Florida International University. Presented in Session 1, Panel 2: “Florida’s Indigenous People: Tribal Origins and Tribal Health” (10:00) Dr. Jacob Ivey, Assistant Professor of History at Florida Memorial University. Presented in Session 1, Panel 3 “Activism, Difficult History, and Challenging Times” (19:59) John Venecek, from UCF Libraries Research and Information Services. Presented in “Brown Bag ‘Lunch and Learn’” (29:09) Dr. Cecilia Rodriguez-Milanes, Associate Professor of English, Creative Writing, and Literature at UCF. Presented in Session III, Panel 6: “Puerto Rican Arts, Culture, and Politics: Five Years After Maria” (38:19)

Professional Ethics in Puerto Rico: Codes, Problem Solving, and Ethical Dissent
This exercise in Business and Professional Ethics uses the DVD developed by the National Institute for Engineering Ethics, "Incident at Morales" to teach the ethical leadership and social responsibility in business and engineering. It also raises issues of how professionals must work to realize professional standards while operating within the constraints posed by the financial objectives. This derived copy has been developed to go along with the presentation given on engineering and surveying ethics before the Puerto Rico State Society of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors on November 15, 2007. This activity was co-sponsored by the Puerto Rico Office of Governmental Ethics. Abstract by author
Price relationships between qualitatively differentiated agricultural products: organic and conventional wheat in Germany
Organic agriculture, which produces commodities that can be qualitatively differentiated from conventional food products, has grown into an important market in many countries. The dynamics of commodity prices in both sectors are partly interdependent, but are also shaped by independent determinants and have rarely been studied. We analyze organic food markets and their interdependencies with conventional markets in the context of wheat markets in Germany, which have been subject to a number of fundamental changes during the last two decades. Based on institutional market characteristics, we suggest a flexible Markov-switching asymmetric time series model. We find a pronounced temporal sequence of market phases that differ in their asymmetric dynamics and the extent to which the organic price is influenced by the conventional price. Organic wheat prices tend to be increasingly connected to prices of conventional wheat
LA EXISTENCIA DE UN GENERO RABO DE GARRAPATA EN LOS MURCIELAGOS EN PUERTO RICO
Since bats are the only living native land mammals of Puerto Rico, the author attempted a survey of their ectoparasites in hopes of finding new, indigenous species of mites, ticks, and fleas. During the course of this work it was discovered that the common fruit eating bat, Artibeus jamaicensis jamaicensis Leach, is parasitized by a tick in the unusual genus Spelaeorhynchus, not previously known to occur in Puerto Rico. No tick has heretofore been reported from bats in Puerto Rico, although previous efforts had been made to find them.

Ethics and Laptops: Identifying Social Responsibility Issues in Puerto Rico
This module is based on a hypothetical case with some very real implications. Students are placed in the perspective of decision-makers charged with implementing a project to give public school students in Puerto Rico laptop computers to facilitate their education. Then they are provided with a socio-technical system methodology to help them identify potential problems embedded in laptop technology. Using these tools, they identify and solve ethical and social problems that are likely to arise when public officials work to implement laptop computer technology into the Puerto Rican public school socio-technical system. The carbon fluxes in different successional stages: modelling the dynamics of tropical montane forests in South Ecuador
Abstract Background Tropical forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle. However, tropical montane forests have been studied less than tropical lowland forests, and their role in carbon storage is not well understood. Montane forests are highly endangered due to logging, land-use and climate change. Our objective was to analyse how the carbon balance changes during forest succession. Methods In this study, we used a method to estimate local carbon balances that combined forest inventory data with process-based forest models. We utilised such a forest model to study the carbon balance of a tropical montane forest in South Ecuador, comparing two topographical slope positions (ravines and lower slopes vs upper slopes and ridges). Results The simulation results showed that the forest acts as a carbon sink with a maximum net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of 9.3 Mg C∙(ha∙yr)−1 during its early successional stage (0–100 years). In the late successional stage, the simulated NEE fluctuated around zero and had a variation of 0.77 Mg C∙(ha∙yr) –1. The simulated variability of the NEE was within the range of the field data. We discovered several forest attributes (e.g., basal area or the relative amount of pioneer trees) that can serve as predictors for NEE for young forest stands (0–100 years) but not for those in the late successional stage (500–1,000 years). In case of young forest stands these correlations are high, especially between stand basal area and NEE. Conclusion In this study, we used an Ecuadorian study site as an example of how to successfully link a forest model with forest inventory data, for estimating stem-diameter distributions, biomass and aboveground net primary productivity. To conclude, this study shows that process-based forest models can be used to investigate the carbon balance of tropical montane forests. With this model it is possible to find hidden relationships between forest attributes and forest carbon fluxes. These relationships promote a better understanding of the role of tropical montane forests in the context of global carbon cycle, which in future will become more relevant to a society under global change
