    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    La estructura vertical termohalina y el campo de velocidades asociados al ciclón de Campeche (CCE) se estudió a partir de datos de glider obtenidos en tres misiones diferentes: misión 10 (M010, primavera), misión 13 (M013, otoño), y misión 17 (M017, primavera). Además, se utilizaron datos de altimetría satelital y un método de detección de remolinos para estudiar la variabilidad superficial de la posición, el tamaño, e intensidad del CCE. Los datos de altimetría indicaron que el CCE presenta una variabilidad estacional, siendo más frecuente en otoño, y menos frecuente en verano. Por otro lado, con los datos de temperatura y salinidad obtenidos con los gliders, se calcularon la temperatura conservativa (Θ) y salinidad absoluta (SA). Las observaciones mostraron que la distribución vertical termohalina asociada al CCE fue distinta en cada misión. La anomalía mínima de Θ fue de -7.87 ◦C a los ∼ 157 m de profundidad, y la anomalía mínima de SA -0.86 gkg−1 a los ∼ 193 m, ambos mínimos de anomalías se observaron en la M010. Por otro lado el valor máximo de velocidad geostrófica (Ug) fue 1.02 m/s a los ∼ 31 m en la M013. En general, los máximos absolutos de anomalías de Θ, SA, y Ug de la M010 se encontraron ∼ 100 m más someros que en la M013 y la M017. Con los perfiles de Θ y SA se analizaron las masas de agua presentes en el CCE durante cada misión. En la M010 se observó en superfice Agua superficial del Caribe (CSW) erosianada, y Agua Común del Golfo (GCW) hasta los 150 m. Mientras que en la M013 el CCE presentó CSW, y alrededor de los 200 m se encontró Agua Subtropical Subsuperficial del Atlántico Norte (NASUW). Por otro lado el CCE de la M017 presentó NASUW erosionada, precursora de la GCW. Estos resultados, nos sugirieron investigar el posible origen de cada CCE muestreado, por lo que, encuadrando los datos de altimetría y de gliders se identificaron dos estructuras verticales termohalinas del CCE distintas: (i) CCE de origen local con masas de agua del oeste (GCW), y (ii) CCE de origen remoto, con masas de agua del este del golfo (NASUW). El CCE de origen remoto se debió al arribo de un remolino frontal de la Corriente del Lazo (LCFE) y su interacción con otros ciclones presentes en la bahía de Campeche (BC). Hasta la fecha, no se había reportado la llegada de un LCFE a la BC, y que este pudiese influenciar en laestructura vertical termohalina del CCE, destacando así la posible contribución de los LCFEs en la distribución de calor y sal en el suroeste ...The vertical thermohaline structure and velocity field associated with the Campeche cyclone (CCE) was studied from glider data obtained in three different missions: mission 10 (M010, spring), mission 13 (M013, fall), and mission 17 (M017, spring). In addition, satellite altimetry data a d an eddies detection algoritm were used to study the surface variability of the position, size, and intensity of the CCE. The altimetry data indicated that CCE presents seasonal variability, being more frequent in autumn, and less frequent in summer. On the other hand, with the temperature and salinity data obtained with the gliders, we calculated the conservative temperature (Θ) and absolute salinity (SA). The observations showed that the vertical thermohaline distribution associated with the CCE was different in each mission. The minimum anomaly of Θ was -7.87 ◦C at ∼ 157 m depth, and the minimum anomaly of SA was -0.86 gkg−1 at ∼ 193 m, both minimum anomalies were observed in M010. On the other hand, the maximum value of geostrophic velocity (Ug) was 1.02 m/s at ∼ 31 m in M013. In general, the absolute maxima of anomalies of Θ, SA, and Ug in M010 were found ∼ 100 m shallower than in M013 and M017. We analyzed the water masses present in the CCE during each mission, using profiles of Θ and SA. At M010, we observed Caribbean Surface Water remnant (CSW) and Gulf Common Water (GCW) up to 150 m. While in M013 the CCE presented CSW, and around 200 m we found Subtropical Subsurface Water of the North Atlantic (NASUW). On the other hand, the CCE of M017 presented NASUW remnant, a precursor to GCW. These results suggested that we investigate the possible origin of each sampled CCE, therefore, framing the altimetry and glider data, two different vertical thermohaline structures of the CCE were identified: (i) CCE of local origin with western water masses (GCW), and (ii) CCE of remote origin, with water masses of the east of the gulf (NASUW). The CCE of remote origin was due to the arrival of a frontal eddy of the Loop Current (LCFE) and its interaction with other cyclones present in the Bay of Campeche (BC). To date, the arrival of an LCFE to the BC has not been reported, and how this could influence the thermohaline vertical structure of the CCE, thus highlighting the possible contribution of the LCFEs in the distribution of heat and salt in the southwest of the Gulf of Mexico
