The levitical authorship of Ezra Nehemiah
The study of Ezra-Nehemiah has been revolutionised in recent years by a growing rejection of the long-established belief that it was composed as part of the Chronicler's work. That shift in scholarly paradigms has re-opened many questions of origin and purpose, and this thesis attempts to establish an answer to the most important of these: the question of authorship. The first part deals with preliminary questions, reviewing the relationship with Chronicles and the unity of the work, and investigating current theories of origin. It affirms that Ezra-Nehemiah should be considered a single, independent composition, to be dated to the late fifth century B.C., and establishes that the author most probably belonged to one of the clerical groups of priests or Levites. The second part examines the attitude toward Levites in Ezra-Nehemiah, and compares it to the treatment of Levites in other, more or less contemporary literature. This comparison shows that the work is unlikely to have been a priestly composition, since priestly texts of the period show a consistent determination to portray the Levites as clerus minor, subordinate to the priests. On the other hand, the portrayal in Ezra-Nehemiah is quite compatible with that of the Levitical stratum in Chronicles. The third part explores the ideology of Ezra-Nehemiah in the context of Persian rule. It establishes that the author was pro-Persian, despite good reasons for Jewish discontent with Achaemenid policies, and shows that this would not have been inappropriate for a Levitical author by the time the work was written. It also explores the socio-political ideology of the book, concluding that its concerns with decentralisation, cooperation and reform are unlikely to have been voiced by a priestly writer. The dissertation concludes, therefore, that the most probable origin for Ezia-Nehemiah lies in Levitical circles, and that it was composed at a time when Levites had established an improvement in their status and authority, following Persian disenchantment with the priesthood. The implications of this conclusion, literary and historical, are explored briefly in the final chapter

The Use of Leviticus in Ezra-Nehemiah
In light of the current disparity of views regarding the dating of Leviticus and Ezra-Nehemiah, this study revisits similar traditions found in these books in order to gain a sense of logical progression. The author calls attention to elements from Leviticus which are present in Ezra-Nehemiah but not found elsewhere in the Torah. She argues for the chronological priority of significant cultic traditions from Leviticus over their counterparts in Ezra-Nehemiah

Why is PSL(2, 7) = GL(3, 2)? Mathematical Association of America Ezra Brown and Nicholas Loehr 1. INTRODUCTION. The groups of invertible matrices over finite fields are among the first groups we meet in a beginning course in modern algebra. Eventually, we find out about simple groups and that the unique simple group of order 168 has two representations as a group of matrices. And this is where we learn that the group of 2x2 unimodular matrices over a seven-element field, with / and -/ identified, is isomorphic to the group of invertible 3x3 matrices over a 2-element field. In short, it is a fact that PSL(2, 7) = GL(3, 2). Many of us are surprised by this fact: why should a group of 2 x 2 matrices with mod-7 integer entries be isomorphic to a group of 3 x 3 binary matrices? There are a number of proofs of this remarkable theorem. Dickson [1, p. 303] gives a proof based on his general theorem giving uniform sets of generators and relations for the family of groups SL(2, q), where q is any prime power. One checks that the relations appearing in Dickson's presentation of PSL(2, 7) are satisfied by certain generators of GL(3, 2), implying that these groups have the same presentations and are therefore isomorphic. Dummit and Foote [2, show that every simple group of order 168 is necessarily isomorphic to the automorphism group Aut(.F) of the Fano plane T. They then show that Aut(^) = GL(3, 2) and that PSL(2, 7) is a simple group of order 168; the isomorphism theorem follows. Rotman gives the result as an exercise [5, Exercise 9.26, p. 281]. A hint is to begin with a simple group G of order 168 and use the seven conjugates of a Sylow 2-subgroup P of G to construct a sevenpoint projective plane; the proof is similar to Dummit and Foote's proof. Jeurissen [4] proves the result by showing that both PSL(2, 7) and GL(3, 2) are subgroups of index 2 of the automorphism group of a Coxeter graph. Elkies The aim of this paper is to give a proof that PSL(2, 7) = GL(3, 2) that is elementary in the sense that it uses neither simplicity, nor projective geometry, nor block designs. We will not prove the fact that any two simple groups of order 168 are isomorphic, nor will we use this fact in our proof. What makes our proof work is that: (a) we can identify GL(3, 2) with the set of invertible F2-linear transformations on the finite field with eight elements; (b) 7 = 23 -1; (c) the nonzero squares mod 7 are precisely the powers of 2 mod 7; (d) squaring mod 2 is additive (the Freshman's Dream); and (e) the mapping k h+ -i/k mod 7 translates to a bit-switch mod 2 -which is linear. Modernism, antisemitism and Jewish identity in the writing and publishing of John Rodker
This thesis examines the relationship between the English Jewish writer and publisher John Rodker and the modernism of the Pound circle. Previous considerations of the antisemitism of Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot have either
ignored or cited in their defence their Jewish friends and acquaintances. This thesis shows that the modernist interest in the figure of `the Jew' took effect not only in
their poetry and social commentary but also in the social grouping which they formed in order to produce and circulate this writing. Rodker was both a necessary
figure to Pound's theory and practice of modernism, but one who had to be kept on the margins. This resulted in his being able to articulate certain aspects of his
experience as an assimilated Jew-loss, disconnection, feeling out of place place-while excluding any other possible aspects, including naming himself as Jewish.
Chapter 1 shows that Pound and Eliot's antisemitic statements and poetry functioned as part of the formation of the `men of 1914', and as a means of shocking their audience through a poetry of ugliness. Chapter 2 considers a printing error in Rodker's Ovid Press edition of Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920), and reads it as a sign of Pound's failure to carry out his social and poetic project, a failure which he blamed on Jews, but, because this failure was inevitable, part of the task for carrying the project out was assigned to Jews. Chapter 3 reads Rodker's volume
of poetry Hymns (1920), and traces how his marginal position within modernism resulted in a poetry which did not directly address Jewish issues, but was affected
by his Jewish social position. Chapter 4 considers Rodker and two other Jewish writers, Carl Rakosi and Louis Zukofsky, who Pound published in The Exile (1927-
28), showing that Pound's interest in these writers was combined with an unease with them that played out in editorial decisions and means of framing their work.
Chapter 5 examines Rodker's Memoirs of Other Fronts (1932). His selfdescriptions of himself as a foreigner are shown to be still influenced by the Pound circle's ideas of Jews, but also reworked through his increasing interest in
psychoanalysis
Ezra Jack Keats Lecture
Ezra Jack Keats (1916-83) is internationally recognized as one of the most influential creators of picture books in the 20th century. He was author and illustrator of more than 20 books and provided the illustrations for an additional 63 titles in a distinguished career that spanned four decades. The Caldecott-winning The Snowy Day (Viking, 1962) was revolutionary by sympathetically dealing with the experiences of an African-American child. A multi-racial and urban world was beautifully reflected in many of his other books. Although comfortable and adept with many mediums, Keats is justly remembered as a true master of collage. His technique of using such favorite characters as Peter, Louie and Willie in a series of stories is just one reason why the stories of Ezra Jack Keats continue to be loved by children of all ages.
The University of Southern Mississippi is very proud that Ezra Jack Keats was the 12th recipient of the Southern Miss Medallion for outstanding contributions to children’s literature. In 1985, the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation established the Ezra Jack Keats Lectureship at the annual Children’s Book Festival

New York: McGraw-Hill, 1984. 339 + xx pp. These three books testify to the continuing growth of Pound studies, and two of the three suggest that if readers are going to consider the poet's work at all, they must consider it in the light of his politics. E. Fuller Torrey, for example, begins his book on Pound's controversial incarceration at St. Elizabeths Hospital with the bold assertion that "recent release of files in the [U.S.] Department of Justice... has made it possible to understand Ezra Pound"; he also claims that an understanding of the man "in turn permits an understanding of his poetry, for the man and the poems are one" (p. xix). That one can truly "understand" any author, let alone one as complex as Ezra Pound, and thus "understand" his poetry, is a claim that sees very little literary sophistication in its making; a mere undergraduate's passing familiarity with the biographical fallacy would suggest as much, while a more finely tuned critical sensibility might regard a statement such as "the man and his poems are one" as particularly irresponsible and foolish, especially when applied to a poet whose oeuvre stresses objectivity and includes a book called Personae. </jats:p
Late Henry James: money, war and the end of writing
My dissertation, Late Henry James: Money, War and the End of Writing, revises the dominant account of Henry James’s late work by reading it as an urgent response to its contemporary history. I hope to show that the impenetrability of James’s late work articulated his increasing perplexity before alien and intractable historical developments. In my account, James’s notoriously dense and elusive late style is in fact a plastic, encompassing, indeed lucid effort to understand certain social and political transformations. James’s late writings might be described as evolving toward a Conradian view of history, a sense that the modern social order is inherently rapacious and violent. For instance, The Golden Bowl, James’s last major completed novel, is a fiction of moral, historical, and epistemological crises, intertwined in the form of an all-encompassing, tortuously convoluted late style. His old themes and their moral orders have evolved into their own exaggerated convolutions, indeed have developed into irresolvable moral contradictions. Money, ascendant and aggressive, seems increasingly to define and control the moral realm. The American girl (a perennial James type) has become almost monstrous; self-consciously wielding her money, she imposes an American innocence that now appears as a moral deformation, as a moral darkness. The argument of my dissertation, as I have just described it, is embodied as well in its method, a way of thinking, of reading, of writing, and of teaching literature. This method arises from the principle that literary objects are instruments of knowledge.
