Author interview: Q and A with Dr Phillipa K. Chong on inside the critics’ circle: book reviewing in uncertain times
In this author interview, we speak to Dr Phillipa K. Chong about her recent book, Inside the Critics’ Circle: Book Reviewing in Uncertain Times, which takes readers behind the scenes of fiction reviewing, drawing on interviews with critics to explore the complexities of the review-writing process within a broader context of uncertainty
Appropriations of Irish drama by modern Korean nationalist theatre : a focus on the influence of Sean O’Casey in a colonial context
My thesis explores how a translated author on the periphery of the host culture’s
translated repertoire can be at once subversive and innovative on the colonial scene,
using as an example the case of Sean O’Casey in colonial Korea. It explores the
importation of Irish drama in modern Korean theatre during the colonial period and
examines the appropriations of O’Casey’s plays by a central Korean playwright, Yu
Chi-jin, in creating his own plays. Under Japanese colonial rule in the early twentieth
century, intellectuals perceived the supreme task for the Korean people to be the
recovery of national sovereignty and independence. The modern Korean theatre
movement which rose among Korean intellectuals and dramatists during the colonial
period was to play a major part in this task. The ultimate goal of this movement was
to establish a modern national theatre promoting Korean culture and educating the
people, thereby recovering national independence. As their modernised dramatic
polysystem was still "young", Korean intellectuals and dramatists who were
involved in the theatre movement had to borrow dramatic models from other
countries. One of the models they chose was Irish playwrights, especially those who
were involved in the Irish dramatic movement. They published or staged the works
of W.B. Yeats, Lord Dunsany [Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett], Augusta
Gregory, J.M. Synge, St. J. Ervine, T.C. Murray and Sean O'Casey. Although
O'Casey was considered an important dramatist in the Irish dramatic movement, he
was a playwright on the periphery in the list of translated Irish dramatists in Korea
due to the colonisers’ censorship. However, he remained as a subversive and
innovative playwright on the colonial scene by virtue of being appropriated by Yu
Chi-jin who used O’Casey’s plays as models when creating his own works. In
discussing the subject matter of my thesis, I use Even Zohar’s polysystems theory as
a starting point in looking at ideological issues surrounding translation and extend
the discussion to offer a postcolonial perspective. While most translation in a
colonial context was considered as "an expression of the cultural power of the
colonisers," my thesis shifts the focus to translation as an expression of the cultural
power of the colonised. I explore how the colonised uses another colonised culture to
subvert the colonisers’ power

Wang Chong "Lun heng" xin tan =: Reinvestigation on Lunheng of Wang Chong
M.Phil.Lunheng(論衡) is the only extant work from Wang Chong(王充 27-100), renowned Eastern Han philosopher, in the contemporary society. In the autobiography Ziji(自紀),Wang Chong portrayed it as a book written due to his “dissatisfaction with the many deceitful books and popular literature devoid of veracity and (傷偽書俗文多不實誠). Consequently, Lunheng has been generally interpreted as a work that embodies the spirit of “criticism on fictions and (疾虛妄) in various academic fields. On the other hand, Wang Chong has become a significant representative in philosophical history of Han with his acclaimed status as a realist evincing an avid interest in the criticism to falsehood and pursuit of truth. However, the assumption of such writing aspiration proves to be inadequate to the interpretation of the text, for there are considerable contents unrelated to “criticism on fictions and falsehood” in Lunheng. Second, plenty of debates and discussions in Lunheng suggest that Wang Chong lacks actual concerns for reason and truth. To a certain extent, such discourses even reveal the opposite of such readiness. In view of the doubts regarding this persisting premise, the present impartial discourse of Wang Chong’s thoughts and his historical image is thus challenged and awaits vigorous reinvestigation. This thesis attempts to carry out such reinvestigation and mainly involves four chapters. The first chapter begins with the reappraisal of the study of Wang Chong’s social stratum as its approach, hoping to discover the emotional foundation that the writing rests on and the basic concerns of Wang Chong as a scholar and a minor government official. The second chapter revolves around the articles related to “criticism on fictions and falsehood”, targeting at the inspection of the modus of the criticism in Lunheng, as well as the Wang Chong’s writing intention and values refracted from it. The third chapter centers on the last seven chapters of Lunheng, in which they reflect the ultimate ambition and related contestations with traditional Confucianist values of the author. The fourth and final chapter investigates the source of credibility that underlies the criticism and thought of Wang Chong, so as to reveal the gist of its philosophical characteristics and historical meaning. This thesis aims to establish a new and consistent interpretation for Lunheng, present an objective picture of Wang Chong’s thoughts, and give a proper evaluation to its importance.《論衡》是東漢王充(27-100)惟一傳世著作,據全書總序〈自紀〉篇所述,《論衡》是因為「傷偽書俗文多不實誠」而撰作,〈佚文〉篇又謂「《論衡》篇以十數,亦一言也,曰『疾虛妄』」。 Parallel title from English abstract.Thesis M.Phil. Cicero and Wang Chong : on divination, philosophy, and science
Divination is a universal phenomenon in the ancient world. It once assumed the roles of philosophy and science in providing guidance on how to live. In our present time, this ancient practice is reduced to a mere form of irrationality, magic, or superstition and this suggests that it should not merit philosophical attention. Contrary to this point, I assert that there is possible philosophical import of this ancient guide of living. This dissertation reconsiders the problem of human existence or the question of how to live in the purview of our current understanding of the world that is immensely influenced or shaped by science. I significantly build my response from my reading of the works of Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BCE—43 BCE) and Wang Chong 王充 (27 CE—ca 97 CE) in their discourse of divination. My overarching argument is that humans cannot gain full control of nature or the world or the universe, and this control of nature should not be considered as the aim, reason, goal, or essence of living. I employ both comparative and intercultural philosophical approaches. It is most effective to compare the two thinkers as the initial step in order to establish their differences and sameness. The intercultural approach follows which shows the possible encounter or intersection of these thinkers in order to reconsider the aforementioned problem. There are three instances of comparisons which are found at the end of chapters 2, 4, and 5; they are basically reflective of the comparative approach. The intercultural response is provided in the conclusion where I briefly mentioned three points regarding how these thinkers compensate each other in order to provide valuable lessons for today.</p
