Laparoscopic resection of solitary gastric schwannoma.
No full textWe report a case of successful laparoscopic resection of a solitary schwannoma of the gastric fundus performed on emergency. The patient was a 52-year-old man who presented with an upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage. At admission, the endoscopy and hydro-CT scan showed a submucosal tumor, 2.5 cm in maximum diameter, with an area of central ulceration arising from the anterior wall of the gastric fundus. A wedge laparoscopic resection of the gastric wall was performed under endoscopic guidance. The defect in the anterior wall was repaired in part by linear stapler and in part using a continuous suture. The postoperative recovery was uneventful and the patient was discharged on the 4th postoperative day. Laparoscopic approach represents a safe and efficient approach for the treatment of benign tumors of the stomach, also on emergency basis

No full textAn increased number of interphasic nucleolar organizer regions containing ribosomal cistrons associated with argyrophilic proteins (AgNORs) has been described in human malignant tumor cells. In this study variations in AgNOR numbers have been compared with changes of cell kinetics, evaluated by the mitotic count (MC) and bromodeoxyuridine labeling index (BrdU LI), during gastric carcinogenesis induced with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NG) in rats. Significant differences (2 P < 0.005) in AgNOR mean numbers, evaluated in the antral isthmic cells, in MC mean values and BrdU LI, evaluated in the whole antral cellular population, were found when comparing areas of acute gastritis, atrophy and hyperplasia in NG-treated rats with the normal mucosa in controls. No differences were observed in MC and BrdU LI between normal antrum and carcinoma cells which showed an AgNORs mean number lower than in the isthmic cells of controls (2 P < 0.005). Moreover, significant correlations were found comparing changes in AgNOR numbers with MC (r = 0.89, P < 0.001) and BrdU LI (r = 0.66, P < 0.001) in different lesions. These data show that evaluation of AgNOR numbers does not allow the identification of malignant cells in NG-induced gastric carcinoma. However AgNOR quantification seems to be a reliable index of cell kinetics and related well with the cellular dividing fraction

Role of prostaglandins in the early phases of experimental gastric carcinogenesis in the rat.
No full textThe study was initiated to evaluate the effect of N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NG) on gastric intraluminal prostaglandin release during a 30-day treatment period and to investigate the effect of a stable prostaglandin E1 analogue (misoprostol) on NG-induced gastric mucosal damage during the same time period. Samples of gastric juice (1 h) were obtained from 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats with chronic gastric fistulas, in basal conditions and after 5, 15 and 30 days of continuous oral administration of NG (120 mg/l) or tap water. Aliquots of gastric juice were titrated with 0.1 M NaOH. Other aliquots were extracted with ethyl acetate and subjected to specific radioimmunoassay for prostaglandin E2. The severity of gastric mucosal lesions was evaluated in 60 rats after 5 days and 30 days of continuous oral administration of NG (120 mg/l) or NG plus misoprostol (200 micrograms/kg-1/day-1) or tap water, and a histological study was carried out. Administration of NG induced a significant decrease of gastric intraluminal prostaglandin E2 concentration at 15 and 30 days. Oral administration of misoprostol, at non-antisecretory doses, protected the rats against NG-induced gastric mucosal damage. Prostaglandins may be involved in the early phases of experimental gastric carcinogenesis
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
