Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Reducing barriers to Covid-19 vaccines among structurally disadvantaged populations: the role of public health nurses in promoting health equity
No full textIn Canada, the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing social inequities and has further contributed to the morbidity and mortality of individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Access to evidence-based services, such as Covid-19 vaccinations, is paramount to population health promotion and health equity advocacy. Health equity can be achieved through the promotion of equitable access to healthcare services and equal distribution of resources. Addressing health inequities during the Covid-19 pandemic is a major goal and moral imperative in the public health sector. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore the practice roles of public health nurses (PHNs) during the pandemic in regard to their contribution to reducing barriers to Covid-19 vaccines and promoting health equity for structurally disadvantaged clients. A greater understanding of the PHNs’ role in promoting health equity during the pandemic can contribute to excellence in nursing practice, improve client outcomes, and increase awareness about the importance of social justice and health equity action. Interpretive description by Dr. Sally Thorne was chosen as the methodology for this study to explore and understand the roles of PHNs delivering Covid-19 vaccines through the Focused Immunization Team (FIT). The WRHA Public Health Nursing Professional Practice Model by Dr. Cheryl Cusack was used in scaffolding this study. The literature search was completed using PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. The articles used in this study were published in English from 2012 to 2024. The literature reviewed included peer-reviewed journal articles, books, as well as grey literature obtained from professional organizations’ websites. A conventional content analysis was used to analyze the data collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 FIT PHNs. During this process, 11 major themes were identified and categorized into five sections. Although the literature on promoting health equity during the pandemic by prioritizing Covid-19 vaccines for vulnerable populations is abundant, there is no sufficient evidence regarding PHNs’ role on the outreach FIT team in the local context of Manitoba. These study results have implications for future PHN practice, research, education, and administrative domains. It is necessary to further explore how local public health outreach programs can optimize equitable service delivery and improve health outcomes for vulnerable clients during global public health outbreaks.October 202
Response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic: Manitoba public health nurses' experience
No full textDuring the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, public health nurses (PHNs) were called upon to protect their communities against a deadly influenza virus. Currently, there appears to be no literature that describes the experience of Canadian PHNs responding to the first influenza pandemic of the 21st century. A qualitative research study was conducted and the data were analyzed by using content analysis. Thirteen nurses were interviewed from an Urban, Rural and Northern health region in Manitoba. Focus groups were conducted for the Urban and Rural nurses while Northern nurses were interviewed by telephone. Communication and dissemination of information, personal and professional challenges, personal face of the pandemic, regional support and lessons learned were themes generated from the data analysis. Communication and information flow was a major theme that impacted the overall PHNs’ response experience. Practice, administration, research and education implications and the limitations of the study are presented in the study.October 201
