Media(ted) fabrications: How the science-media symbiosis helped ‘sell’ cord banking

    No full text
This paper considers the problematic role of the science–media symbiosis in the dissemination of misleading and emotionally manipulative information regarding services offered by CordBank, New Zealand's only umbilical cord blood banking facility. As this case study illustrates, the growing reliance of health and science reporters on the knowledge capital of medical specialists, biogenetic researchers, and scientists potentially enhances the ability of ‘expert’ sources to set the agenda for media representations of emerging medical and scientific developments, and may undermine the editorial independence of journalists and editors, many of whom in this case failed to critically evaluate deeply problematic claims regarding the current and future benefits of cord banking. Heavy reliance on established media frames of anecdotal personalization and technoboosterism also reinforced a proscience journalistic culture in which claims by key sources were uncritically reiterated and amplified, with journalistic assessments of the value of cord banking emphasizing potential benefits for individual consumers. It is argued that use of these media frames potentially detracts from due consideration of the broader social, ethical, legal, and health implications of emerging biomedical developments, along with the professional, personal, and increasingly also financial interests at stake in their public promotion, given the growing commercialization of biogenetic technologies

Supervisor’s supporting comments I have always been impressed with Michelle’s ability to conduct research in an independent and yet highly effective manner. Part of her research in my group has examined the use of affinity columns to examine drug–protein binding with serum proteins, such as human serum albumin. This work is extremely important to the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry and clinical chemistry in providing the data needed for the development of new drugs or in the optimization of treatments for patients with new, or existing, drugs. Another topic that Michelle has examined in her research is the use of new supports based on monolithic materials and ultrafast-extraction methods for affinity-based separations of biological samples and high-throughput screening of drug–protein binding. She was the lead author on a review written on this topic and also has several research publications related to this area of work. During her graduate studies, Michelle has emerged as a real leader in my group. She has excellent people and communication skills and is highly motivated in her pursuit of an advanced degree in analytical chemistry and bioanalysis. I have extremely high expectations for her in the future as she continues her career. Michelle Gaynor is majoring in biology at the University of Central Florida, with a particular interest in plant biology. She is involved in a research project under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Hoffman and Dr. Linda Walters. The project evaluates the impact of current restoration efforts on genetic diversity of smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora, used for shoreline stabilization, within the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida. As a member of the Student Undergraduate Research Council and the GEMS (Girls EXCELing in Math and Science), Gaynor is dedicated to increasing female presence in the sciences and overall helping students engage in undergraduate research. She will pursue a graduate degree to continue addressing research questions. Gaynor hopes to have a career in academia and mentor the next generation of scientist.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/ramp_gallery/1009/thumbnail.jp

Crossing the Boundaries: STEM Students in Four-Year and Community Colleges

    No full text
In this paper we consider the role of community colleges for four-year STEM students as they move through their educational careers. We examine a student cohort who began their freshman year at a four-year college and the pathways that lead them to coursetaking or degrees at a community college. We identify three distinct roles of community colleges as used by four-year college students: (1) reverse transfer; (2) supplemental course taking while pursuing a four-year degree; (3) post-graduate community college coursetaking and/or enrollment. There are other variations on these three basic patterns but limited data and sample size constrain our analysis to these broader patternsArticle commissioned by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Board on Science Education, for the project, "Barriers and Opportunities in Completing Two and Four-Year STEM Degrees".Peer reviewe
