Ildefonso Schuster e Gregorio VII, laicità e ierocrazia

This study analyses the relationship between tradition and the twentieth-century interpretation of the figure and work of Pope Gregory VII, through an episode in the biography of Ildefonso Schuster, abbot of St Paul Outside-the-Walls and, starting in 1929, Cardinal Archbishop of Milan. Schuster’s long familiarity with Pope Gregory was reactivated at the beginning of the 1950s, when the Cardinal of Milan was called to Rome by Pope Pius XII, for the Jubilee of 1950, and carried out an investigation of the remains of Benedetto in Montecassino. In 1954, not long before his death, Ildefonso Schuster carried out a second investigation, this time in Salerno and of the body of Gregory VII. During the investigation, the ‘Pacellian’ Church and the Gregorian Church seemed for an instant to overlap and blend

Acanthophotopsis dorophora Schuster Acanthophotopsis dorophora Schuster, 1958. Ent. Amer. 37: 13. Male. Holotype data: Tucson, Arizona, 26.Aug. 1935. O. Bryant (UMSP). Diagnosis of male. The male of this species possesses a tridentate mandible, lacks a fourth mandibular tooth that projects posteriorly over the clypeus, has the posterior margin of head behind eyes elongate, has large conical mesosternal processes, has only a single spur on the mid-tibia, has the paramere of the genitalia squat (e.g., Fig. 1), and has the cuspis curled, but not lobed, apically. Female. Unknown, but possibly will be mistaken as a species of Sphaeropthalma near Sphaeropthalma blakeii and S. papaga Schuster based on male morphology and similarities in ITS 1 and ITS 2 sequences. Material examined. California, Imperial Co., Algodones Dunes: Cahuilla Ranger Sta. 10 km WSW Glamis, 1 male, 22.Sep– 15.Nov. 2008, E. Dreyfus (UCDC). Distribution. Southern Arizona and southern California. Presumably this species is found throughout the Sonoran Desert into Mexico. Remarks. This genus contains five described species and one undescribed species that with be treated elsewhere. Females are unknown for this genus. This species is rarely collected on the dunes, or anywhere else in its range, but is wide-ranging and not limited to the Algodones Sand Dunes.Published as part of Pitts, James P., Wilson, Joseph S., Williams, Kevin A. & Boehme, Nicole F., 2009, Velvet ants (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) of the Algodones sand dunes of California, USA, pp. 1-53 in Zootaxa 2131 on page 7, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18839

Odontophotopsis setifera Schuster Odontophotopsis (Odontophotopsis) setifera Schuster, 1952. Brooklyn Ent. Soc., 47: 47–49, male. Holotype data: California, Riverside Co., Palms to Pines Highway, 28.May. 1940, R.M. Bohart (UMSP). Odontophotopsis (Odontophotopsis) setifera Schuster, 1958. Ent. Amer. (n. s.) 37: 56, male. Diagnosis of male. This species can be recognized by its unique mandibular morphology (Fig. 14). The mandible has the apex vertical and has four teeth with the dorsal tooth is separated from the remaining teeth by a deep sinus similar to the mandibles of O. biramosa (see Fig. 27 of Pitts 2007). Other potentially useful characters are listed in Pitts (2007) and Pitts et al. (2009). Female. Unknown. Material examined. California, Riverside Co., Deep Canyon: 1 male, 16.May. 1963. Distribution. The western Sonoran and Mojave Deserts of Arizona, California, Nevada, and Baja California, Mexico. Remarks. This species is found throughout the Mojave and western Sonoran Deserts. It was placed into the O. setifera species-group along with O. biramosa. See the remarks for O. biramosa for a discussion of the validity of the species-group.Published as part of Pitts, James P., Wilson, Joseph S., Williams, Kevin A. & Boehme, Nicole F., 2010, Nocturnal velvet ant males (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) of Deep Canyon, California including four new species and a fifth new species from Owens Lake Valley, California, pp. 1-34 in Zootaxa 2553 on page 12, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19684

Breakdown point of Schuster-Narvarte's location estimator

The Schuster-Narvarte's (Ann. Statist. 1 (1973) 1096-1104) location parameter of a distribution F, the center of a symmetric distribution closest to F, is an appealing definition for the center of distributions. It is noticed that this parameter is a special case of Donoho and Liu's (Ann. Statist. 16 (1988) 552-586) semiparametric minimum distance functional. For this estimator, an algorithm is available in Schuster-Narvarte (1973); asymptotics results were established in Rao et al. (Ann. Statist. 3 (1975) 862-873) and in Arcones and Giné (Ann. Statist. 19 (1991) 1496-1511); validity of bootstraps is proved in Arcones and Giné (1991) while simulation results can be found in Schuster and Barker (Comm. Statist. Simulation Comput. 16 (1987) 69-84). In this article, we compliment the study by establishing the robustness properties for the Schuster-Narvarte's estimator. A general result for the (enlargement) finite sample breakdown point is established. In particular, when the underlying distribution is symmetric, the limiting finite sample breakdown point is almost surely .Bias Finite sample breakdown point Kolmogorov distance Schuster-Narvarte's parameter Semiparametric minimum distance functional
