The centrality of 'between' in intellectual entrepreneurship
No full textA great deal of intellectual entrepreneurship happens between institutions. Between institutions in the dual sense of the term: institutions as organizations and institutions as conventions. Ideas and the energy to take them forward are often born when people from different organizations come together, ideas that might not fit within one institution alone. And the introduction of new ideas often involves pushing institutions as conventions aside, creating new space BETWEEN existing institutions for the different idea to emerge. The article explores the example of a business- and-research venture, CHOICE mobilitätsproviding GmbH, to illustrate the importance of multiple types of BETWEEN and their significance for organizational learning. -- In der modernen Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft ist Wissen die wichtigste erneuerbare Ressource. Welche Rolle spielen Institutionen bei der Generierung von Wissen und dessen Umsetzung in Innovationen? Findet wissensbasiertes unternehmerisches Denken und Handeln innerhalb von Institutionen oder eher außerhalb von Institutionen statt? In diesem Beitrag wird die Bedeutung von Räumen und Zeiten zwischen Institutionen hervorgehoben und zwar im doppelten Sinn: Institutionen als Organisationen und Institutionen als Konventionen. Anhand des Beispiels der CHOICE mobilitätsproviding GmbH, einem Unternehmen zwischen Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft, werden einige Zwischen-Institutionen dargestellt und ihre Bedeutung für das Organisationslernen erläutert.
Non-invasive, virtual unpacking of enclosed cuneiform - 3D reconstruction and visualization of clay tablets based on data acquired by portable micro-CT scanner
No full textIn this video animation we visualize the reconstruction of an enclosed cuneiform tablet (Louvre Museum, collection no. AO8295, 19th century BC, showing a loan contract, 5.9 cm x 6.1 cm x 2.1 cm) and the envelope. The surface reconstruction, feature analysis, segmentation, and visualization was performed by "EXAVIS42" - which was developed by the author, as part of the project - from high-resolution volume data (38 µm voxel size), acquired by the portable micro-CT scanner "ENCI" - constructed as part of the project - at the collection of the Louvre Museum (Paris). The cuneiform signs are emphasized by a diffuse lighting model, combined with curvature-oriented highlighting and darkening, and shadowing by precalculated ambient occlusion, implementing an optimized function for weighting orientations of rays and their distances of crossed surfaces. The video clip was exported from "EXAVIS42" as a sequence of 4.850 anti-aliased images in 1920x1080 resolution (50 frames per second), off-screen rendered in OpenGL, by taking advantage of key frame animation, interpolating camera positions and orientations, as well as numerous visualization parameters.

Beyond the Bosphorus? Comparing German, French and British Discourses on Turkey’s Application to Join the European Union
No full textThis article examines the impact of national borders on public discourses, based on a case study of the struggle surrounding Turkey’s application to join the European Union (EU). Comparing opinions, reasons and interpretation patterns in press commentaries about enlarging the EU beyond the Bosphorus, the findings confirm the paramount importance and robustness of national cleavages between the German and the French public sphere on the one hand, and the British on the other. Whereas Turkish membership was predominantly re-jected on the continent, the British commentators strongly and almost unanimously sup-ported Ankara’s request to open doors. These similarities and divergences, I argue, are first and foremost the result of, and linked with, competing visions of Europe’s finality, especially regarding various constitutional ideas and cultural principles. Against this background, the Turkey question was partly exploited as an instrument supporting or repressing different conceptions of the European Union’s future

Barriers to energy efficiency improvement: Empirical evidence from small-and-medium sized enterprises in China
No full textThis paper analyzes barriers for energy efficiency investments for small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China. Based on a survey of 480 SMEs in Zhejiang Province, this study assesses financial, informational, and organizational barriers for energy efficiency investments in the SME sector. The conventional view has been that the lack of appropriate financing mechanisms particularly hinders SMEs to adopt cost-effective energy efficiency measures. As such, closing the financing gap for SMEs is seen as a prerequisite in order to promote energy efficiency in the sector. The econometric estimates of this study, however, suggest that access to information is an important determinant of investment outcomes, while this is less clear with respect to financial and organizational factors. More than 40 percent of enterprises in the sample declared that that they are not aware of energy saving equipments or practices in their respective business area, indicating that there are high transaction costs for SMEs to gather, assess, and apply information about energy saving potentials and relevant technologies.
