Subtyping schizophrenia: A comparison of positive/negative and system-specific approaches

    No full text
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disorder. Over the years, different approaches have been proposed to approach this heterogeneity by categorizing symptom patterns. The study aimed to compare positive/negative and system-specific approaches to subtyping. METHODS We used the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Bern Psychopathology Scale (BPS), which consists of subscales for three domains (language, affect and motor behavior) that are hypothesized to be related to specific brain circuits, to assess cross-sectional psychopathological characteristics in a sample of 100 inpatients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. We then categorized participants into positive/negative and system-specific subgroups to allow comparisons of the two approaches. RESULTS The analyses revealed correlations between the PANSS positive subscore and the BPS affective subscore (r=.446, p<.001) and between the PANSS negative subscore and the BPS motor behavior subscore (r=.227, p=.023). As regards the positive and negative subtype, more participants were classified as positive in the language-dominant subtype (30.3%) and affect-dominant subtype (30.3%), whereas more were classified as negative in the motor behavior-dominant subtype (44.4%). However, most patients met the criteria for the mixed subtype. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that the positive/negative and system-specific approaches can be regarded as complementary. Future studies should examine both approaches in a longitudinal assessment of psychopathological symptoms and link them with qualitative-phenomenological approaches

Gluon fusion contribution to W +W - + jet production

    No full text
We describe the computation of the gg → W +W -g process that contributes to the production of two W-bosons and a jet at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While formally of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD, this process can be evaluated separately from the bulk of NNLO QCD corrections because it is finite and gauge-invariant. It is also enhanced by the large gluon flux and by selection cuts employed in the Higgs boson searches in the decay channel H → W +W -, as was first pointed out by Binoth et al. in the context of gg → W +W - production. For cuts employed by the ATLAS collaboration, we find that the gluon fusion contribution to pp → W +W -j enhances the background by about ten percent and can lead to moderate distortions of kinematic distributions which are instrumental for the ongoing Higgs boson searches at the LHC. We also release a public code to compute the NLO QCD corrections to this process, in the form of an add-on to the package MCFM. © 2012 SISSA

Fluoride uptake and development of artificial erosions in bleached and fluoridated enamel in vitro

The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of carbamide peroxide (CP) bleaching on fluoride uptake in enamel. Additionally, the susceptibility for erosion in bleached and fluoridated enamel was tested. Each four enamel specimens were prepared from 44 bovine incisors. The four samples gained from each tooth were distributed among four groups (A-D) of 44 specimens each: A: (unbleached/unfluoridated) served for determination of baseline fluoride concentration; B: (unbleached/fluoridated) four times in 2000 ppm NaF solution (2 min); C: (bleached/unfluoridated) four times in 10% CP (8 h); D: (bleached/fluoridated) four times in 10% CP and fluoridation. In 22 specimens of each group both KOH-soluble and structurally bound fluoride were determined in the outermost 30 mum of the enamel. In the remaining specimens erosions were induced by immersing the samples in 5 mL of 1% citric acid (20 min) and microhardness was evaluated before and after demineralization. Statistical analysis showed that KOH-soluble fluoride uptake was similar for group B and D specimens. Structurally bound fluoride uptake after fluoride application in unbleached samples was significantly higher than in bleached ones. Bleaching only resulted in a highly significant fluoride loss. In all samples erosion caused a significant microhardness loss. The study showed that pre-treatment of enamel with CP followed by fluoridation does not improve erosive resistance. Moreover the study reveals that CP treatment decreases concentration of structurally bound fluoride in enamel which could not be outweighed by fluoridation with 2000 ppm NaF. It is concluded that it is not feasible to improve fluoride uptake in enamel with a pre-treatment with 10% CP

Analysis of the transcriptional program of developing induced regulatory T cells.

CD25+ regulatory T cells develop in the thymus (nTregs), but may also be generated in the periphery upon stimulation of naive CD4 T cells under appropriate conditions (iTregs). To gain insight into the mechanisms governing iTreg development, we performed longitudinal transcriptional profiling of CD25+ T cells during their differentiation from uncommitted naive CD4 T cells. Microarray analysis of mRNA from CD25+ iTregs early after stimulation revealed expression of genes involved in cell cycle progression and T cell activation, which largely overlapped with genes expressed in CD25+ effector T cells (Teffs) used as a control. Whereas expression of these genes remained elevated in Teffs, it declined gradually in developing iTregs, resulting in a more quiescent phenotype in mature iTregs. A similar pattern of kinetics was observed for biological processes and for intracellular pathways over-represented within the expressed genes. A maximum dichotomy of transcriptional activity between iTregs and Teffs was reached at late stages of their maturation. Of interest, members of the FoxO and FoxM1 transcription factor family pathways exhibited a reciprocal expression pattern in iTregs and Teffs, suggesting a role of these transcription factors in determining T cell fate

Rapid measurement of water vapour pressure at the saturation point using a new hybrid humidity sensor

    No full text
A new hybrid humidity sensor comprising a conventional capacitance humidity sensor and a planar heating element is described. Owing to its short response time of only a few milliseconds, its great measuring accuracy, large measuring range, and simplicity in handling, the sensor is suitable for measuring water vapour partial pressure in gases with rapidly changing flow and direction, e.g. in ventilated patients in the fields of anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. The small dimensions permit measurements at almost any location within the ventilation system
