Identification of web-based solutions for the business model of medium-sized cooperative banks : evidence from consumer expectations

Although cooperative banks in Germany gained trust and higher reputation during the financial crisis they are still fearing the "commodity trap". This phenomenon makes their classic retail products redundant. The emerging topic of business model designing poses a solution and enables a rethinking of this unique type of banking. Web-based solutions in the context of this thesis try to prepare this discussion for bringing the brick and mortar banking business "on-line". They are based on the web (channel) as a part of the business model. The thesis focuses especially on the neglected role of the internet: cost pressure and a lack in management attention put the "vr-banks" behind. Therefore, the enormous opportunities which lie in the integration of the internet in the so called multi-channel-approach are shown. With a customer survey (n=493) across 13 vr-banks in Western Germany the assumptions on how to smoothly design a more web-enabled business model were tested. The most important hypotheses deal with the customer´s perception of the vr-bank´s value proposition: the personal advisor and the branch network show a high importance and facilitate a high security; however, 98.5% of the respondents state that the vr-bank should care more about the customer-relationship. A spot check on incoming e-mail tickets showed that one fifth of all electronic requests were caused by inquirers that previously had dissatisfying contact to an employee of the bank. Although, the overall perception of services is satisfying (61%), two thirds of the respondents find that the vr-banks are not exploiting the potential of their business model enough. They show great support for new services and possible new partnerships. However, there are significant differences among the various target groups. Demographic variables like family environment, aging and the baby boomer generation should dictate the pace for web-based solutions. 90% of the sample is using the internet demanding high security and a great ease of use. In some points, especially concerning possible partners, the customer perception differs significantly from the bank managers´ opinion and other current research that deals more with the internal bank view. But these factors identified are only the vanguard of a complex framework that has not been discovered, yet. Due to the low rate of absorptive capacities in vr-banks the degree of exploration in this paper is adjusted to the minimum-effective-dose. All results and recommendations are condensed in a small framework that creates a possible information system

New business opportunities in the field of online collaboration

This thesis analyses the ground laying concepts of social networks, crowd sourcing, commons based peer production, open source projects and freelancer marketplaces. Subsequently a combination of these concepts is formed and a new product idea is elaborated building on these findings. One billion people are already online, open innovation approaches spread and social networking services see continuous growth. Open source self-organized projects are currently mostly found in IT areas, but theories exist that this open source mindset will spread to other areas. Collaboration across continents is already usual for companies working with offshore contributors. These developments are picked up and used as a starting point for the analysis. In a first step theoretical concepts from available research are analyzed and a map of where these concepts fit in and how their real world implementations fit together is drawn. In a second step a classification is developed which looks at certain commonalities and differences of real-world crowd sourcing solutions, freelancer marketplaces and open source projects. The classification is mainly based on qualitative factors and internet research. Freelancer marketplaces and crowd sourcing solutions are analyzed in more detail. The conclusion is that depending on the point of view and the decisive classification factors different groups of concepts belong together. In a third step a brief opportunity analysis is developed. Potential product features are formulated and a strategic positioning is defined. The outcome is very promising. On one hand starting points for further research are suggested, on the other hand concrete potential product features are defined. However, this topic is on the forefront of innovative internet topics and is thereby still in a fluid phase, which means a lot of features and combinations need to be tried out and can not solely be deducted from research. Still the ground laying concepts of research do provide a basis for new product concepts which are currently not found in any competitive offers. The authors' take on the topic is that within the next years a lot of new concepts in this area will emerge

Collective Dynamics of Digitally Enabled Social Networks

Kumulative Dissertation, Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, 2017This thesis investigates the role of technology in the collective dynamics of digitally enabled social networks. Based on a review of the historical foundation of research on crowds, collective behaviour, and collective dynamics in the social sciences and in research on complex systems, it develops a conceptualisation of collective dynamics in the context of digitally enabled social networks. This conceptualisation provides the foundation for one overarching and three subordinate research questions dedicated to different aspects of the role technology plays in understanding and managing the collective dynamics of digitally enabled social networks. The body of work comprising this dissertation is distributed across fifteen papers that contribute to these research questions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
