A systematic review of guided imagery as an adjuvant cancer therapy
No full textAim: The aim of this paper is to summarise and critically evaluate the evidence available from controlled clinical trials regarding the use of guided imagery as a sole adjuvant therapy for cancer patients. Methods: Electronic searches for controlled clinical trials were carried out in eight databases and two clinical trial registers. Trials that featured guided imagery as a sole adjuvant therapy were included. No language restrictions were imposed. Data were extracted and validated independently by two researchers. Results: Six randomised clinical trials were included. Detailed results were available for four studies only. Poor reporting and heterogeneous populations, interventions and outcome measures across trials precluded statistical pooling of results. The methodological quality was on average low. Three studies reported significant differences in measures of anxiety, comfort or emotional response to chemotherapy for patients who received guided imagery over the control groups. Two studies showed no differences between guided imagery and other interventions in any of the outcome measures. Conclusion: Guided imagery, as a sole adjuvant cancer therapy may be psycho-supportive and increase comfort. There is no compelling evidence to suggest positive effects on physical symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. The data seem sufficiently encouraging for the use of guided imagery as an adjuvant cancer therapy to merit further research
Efficacy of coenzyme Q10 for improved tolerability of cancer treatments: A systematic review
No full textPURPOSE: The aim of this systematic review was to summarize and evaluate the evidence available for oral supplementation with coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to improve the tolerability of cancer treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Searches for all published and unpublished controlled trials were carried out on seven databases. Manufacturers of CoQ10 were identified and contacted. Controlled clinical trials of monopreparations of CoQ10 administered orally to cancer patients were included. No language restrictions were imposed. Data were extracted independently by two authors according to predefined criteria. RESULTS: Six studies were included in the review, including three randomized clinical trials and three nonrandomized clinical trials. Patients in five of six studies received anthracyclines. The results suggested that CoQ10 provides some protection against cardiotoxicity or liver toxicity during cancer treatment. However, because of inadequate reporting and analysis, as well as questionable validity of outcome measures, the results are not conclusive. CONCLUSION: Suggestions that CoQ10 might reduce the toxicity of cancer treatments have not been tested by rigorous trials. Further investigations are necessary to determine whether CoQ10 can improve the tolerability of cancer treatments

Sein dokumentierter künstlerischer Ertrag besteht aus nur drei Werken aus der Zeit des Manierismus und Frühbarocks: es handelt sich um einen prächtigen Becher - jetzt im Nationalmuseum in Danzig, eine vergoldete Dose für Kommunikanten aus der Kirche St. Martin in Mochów bei Sierpc - die bisher nicht mit seiner Werkstatt identifiziert wurde - und ein Meßkelch aus der Kirche Mariä Himmelfahrt in Mokre bei Graudenz.The article is devoted to the life and artistic work of the little-known Toruń goldsmith, Thomas Schmidt (1607–1676). His documented artistic output consists of only three works from the Mannerist and Early Baroque periods: a magnificent mug from the National Museum in Gdańsk, a gilded can for sacramental bread from the Church of St. Martin in Mochów near Sierpc – previously not connected to his workshop - and a chalice from the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mokre near Grudziądz.Artykuł poświęcony został życiu oraz twórczości artystycznej mało znanego toruńskiego złotnika Thomasa Schmidta (1607–1676). Jego udokumentowany dorobek artystyczny tworzą jedynie trzy dzieła z okresu manieryzmu i wczesnego baroku: okazały kufel z Muzeum Narodowego w Gdańsku, pozłacana puszka na komunikanty z kościoła św. Prescribing by mental health nurses: the UK perspective

This article aims to discuss the growth of mental health nurse (MHN) prescribing in the United Kingdom as an exemplar for readers to compare progress in their own countries and context. This study also aims to provide a historical overview of this process in the United Kingdom where MHNs prescribe safely and competently.
CONCLUSIONS. Finally, evidence has shown that MHNs with prescriptive authority are competent when prescribing when compared to psychiatrists.
PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS. Despite organizational barriers and educational concerns, MHN prescribing is becoming embedded in the healthcare context in the United Kingdo
Stable internal reference genes for normalization of real-time RT-PCR in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) during development and abiotic stress
No full textReal-time RT-PCR is a powerful technique for the measurement of gene expression, but its accuracy depends on the stability of the internal reference gene(s) used for data normalization. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is an important model in studies of plant gene expression, but stable reference genes have not been well-studied in the tobacco system. We address this problem by analysing the expression stability of eight potential tobacco reference genes. Primers targeting each gene (18S rRNA, EF-1α, Ntubc2, α- and β-tubulin, PP2A, L25 and actin) were developed and optimized. The expression of each gene was then measured by real-time PCR in a diverse set of 22 tobacco cDNA samples derived from developmentally distinct tissues and from plants exposed to several abiotic stresses. L25 and EF-1α demonstrated the highest expression stability, followed by Ntubc2. Measurement of L25 and EF-1α was sufficient for accurate normalization in either the developmental or stress-treated samples, but Ntubc2 was also required when considering the entire sample set. Analysis of a tobacco circadian gene (NTCP-23) verified these reference genes in an additional context, and all techniques were optimized to enable a high-throughput approach. These results provide a foundation for the more accurate and widespread use of real-time RT-PCR in tobacco.Gregor W. Schmidt and Sven K. Delane
Modular RT-Motion USB Software Framework
No full textPhilips Applied Technologies has developed the RT-Motion USB platform as a compact distributed real-time motion control platform, but the platform can still be improved by developing a more advanced software framework. The goal of this thesis project is to design a modular software framework to complement the RT-Motion USB platform with extendability, flexibility, and configurability. The design focuses on the extendability of the platform by developing foundation building blocks to integrate software extension modules and device drivers easily. The design emphasizes the principle of simplicity to ensure the lowest possible overhead and highest reliability. The firmware is modular, which allows each module to concentrate on its own area. The implementation of the design has been tested and is proved to provide extendability, flexibility, and configurability while incurring low overhead. Exploring the effects od a rigid body on the evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability
No full textThis talk discusses the effects of a rigid solid boundary impeding the evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability. The introduction of an obstacle completely alters the evolution of RT growth, instead of mixing the domain rapidly, a quasi-steady flow, rich in dynamics is established for long periods of time. Using a combination of low Atwood number experiments and ILES simulations, this talk will present a non-dimensional analytical model for a multi-stage mixing process, discussing the effects of the opening size and topology on the density change of each layer, buoyancy driven flux through the opening and mixing efficiency
