The My Lai Massacre in American history and memory
No full textThis book examines the response of American society to the massacre and its ambiguous place in American national memory. The author argues that the massacre revelations left many Americans untroubled, and it was only when the soldiers most immediately responsible came to be tried that the controversy really came to public attention. He finds that, contrary to interpretations of the Vietnam conflict as an unhealed national trauma or wound, many Americans have assimilated the war and its violence rather too well, and they were able to do so even when that violence was most conspicuous and current. Consistent with the view that US soldiers have subsequently been cast in national culture as the conflict’s principal victims, it was the American perpetrators of the massacre and not the Vietnamese they brutalized who, even in the case of My Lai, became the central object of popular concern

Systolic Implementations of Up/Down-dating Cholesky Factorization Using Vectorized Gram-Schmidt Pseudo Orthogonalization
No full textWe propose a new class of hyperbolic Gram-Schmidt methods to simultaneously update and downdate the Cholesky factor of a sample covariance matrix efficiently with applications to sliding window recursive least squares (RLS) filtering problems. Several vectorized versions of this Gram-Schmidt approach are introduced, which include conventional column-updating, modified row/column- updating, and square-root-free methods. Comparisons to the existing known methods, such as Householder transformation and Givens rotation, are also given. Upon further reformulating these algorithms, a systolic triarray structure is proposed to facilitate VLSI implementations
Differences in Social Preferences - Are They Profitable for the Firm?
Get PDFThis paper analyzes the impact of heterogeneous (social) preferences on the weighting and combination of performance measures as well as on a firm’s profitability. We consider rivalry, egoism and altruism as extreme forms within the continuum of possible preferences and show that the principal can typically exploit both the altruistic and rivalistic behavior of his agents. Firm profits reach their maximum value if the agents are differentiated as much as possible in their individual characteristics. We provide further insight; namely, that in order to realize these gains in profitability, it is necessary to reallocate participation in performance measures such that competitive agents are privileged as compared to altruistic agents. In this context, stochastic interdependencies are of importance since they yield overlapping functions of the share parameters, causing additional adaptations in the optimal design of the wage compensation system.Social Preferences; Rivalry; Altruism; Egoism; Team Composition; Performance Measurement

Get PDFA tandem Diels-Alder/azido-Schmidt reaction sequence provides rapid access to the core skeleton shared by several Stemona alkaloids including stenine, neostenine, tuberostemonine, and neotuberostemonine. The discovery and evolution of inter- and intramolecular variations of this process and their applications to total syntheses of (±)-stenine and (±)-neostenine are described. The stereochemical outcome of the reaction depends on both substrate type and reaction conditions, enabling the preparation of both (±)-stenine and (±)-neostenine from the same diene/dienophile combination
