Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. A qualitative perspective of sustainability across a supply chain
Using a qualitative approach, this investigation examines perspectives of sustainability concepts and industry experiences from people in various supply chain roles, attempting to answer the question, How does sustainability, as a practice and definition, differ across a supply chain; and what are its benchmarks? Participants in the study included 5 working professionals across different industries. Using systems analysis, in depth interviews elicited 12 common themes of the research. Outcomes of the research discuss the importance of: social, environmental, and economic aspects to sustainability, continuous improvement programs and technological investments, long term focus and planning, and organizational cultures. The contribution includes implications of the research, as well as, recommendations for further research
Examining sustainability attitudes and practices among over-the-road logistics companies operating in indiana
This research study takes a look at the sustainable attitude/awareness level and practices of over-the-road logistics companies operating in Indiana. It has a descriptive study design, providing information in an area that has not been previously analyzed. As the world adopts a greener mindset with the purpose of reducing the carbon footprint, this study helps lead the way towards this goal. It allows for the performance of further research into the reasons certain companies focus on sustainable practices more than others. Eventually, the hope is to increase the amount of companies operating sustainably. The research study included an in-depth literature review of the current transportation business in Indiana and of studies assessing companies\u27 sustainable attitudes, awareness, and practices. A web-based survey was used to gather information from 42 respondents. At least 25 different companies were represented in the study. The results from the survey displayed the respondents\u27 demographic information as well as their responses to 18 sustainability practice and awareness questions incorporating a 5-point Likert scale. The sample consisted of participants with varying levels of sustainable logistics knowledge and awareness. Companies\u27 respondents showed a high priority in economic sustainability practices and a low priority in societal sustainability practices. Larger companies, which employed 10,000 or more people, appeared to have better overall sustainability awareness and practices than smaller companies. As a whole, the sample\u27s sustainability commitment was low. Government policies need to be implemented to instigate change in a positive direction. Companies must adopt a sustainable mindset for significant changes to take effect
A case study of two-echelon multi-depot vehicle routing problem
The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is a classic combinatorial optimization problem and a topic still studied for practical applications. Current research focuses on single echelon distribution systems such as distribution centers serving customers. However, in typical distribution, goods flows among regional distribution centers, local warehouses and customers, defined as a two-echelon network. The two-echelon multiple depot VRP problem is documented and applied to two stages illustrated by a small scale computational example. In the first stage, the simulated annealing algorithm is employed to determine the routes between local warehouses and final customers. For the second stage, trial-and-error is applied to obtain the number and location of regional distribution centers and the routes between regional distribution centers and local warehouses. Matlab is utilized to simulate annealing iterations and cost functions are analyzed. The convergence tendency of simulated annealing is depicted in figures by Matlab coding. Contributions include demonstration between the SA algorithm and a specific combinatorial optimization problem, and an application of the algorithm

The concept of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) was developed to integrate data efficiently and eliminate redundancy within organizations. Worldwide industries rely on ERP systems to keep a competitive advantage in world market place. Besides, cross-functional knowledge is required in industry. It is critical that schools integrate ERP concepts and methods in to academic curricula for Technology and Engineering School. This thesis examined the effectiveness of a simulation game as a method for teaching for ERP systems in Technology and Engineering. The quasi-experimental design was used in this study to determine if the SAP simulation game had an impact on students\u27 understanding of the ERP related concepts. Technology students used a business simulation game that featured SAP-ERP transactions and reports to learn about business systems. Student leaning of business systems was tested before and after playing the simulation game. Student knowledge of specific terminology was higher following the simulation game
The impact of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) simulation on experienced employees\u27 self-efficacy
Training users on Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP) throughout the supply chain has become a critical component of achieving operational efficiency. Various instructional methods have been used as training mechanisms. Most ERP training is tailored for novice employees and fosters niche expertise. This research provided experienced users access to a systemic training solution that emphasized departmental inter-dependencies and enterprise thinking. The goal was to understand if ERP self-efficacy was enhanced in the areas of cognition, attitudes, and ERP systems acceptance across companies and to understand if there was a difference based on subjects\u27 initial training or years of SAP experience. Experienced employees from three companies participated in the study with sample sizes from each company ranging from fourteen to twenty-five. Data from fifty three participants was collected and analyzed across all companies. Paired sample t-tests revealed there was a significant difference in experienced employees\u27 knowledge perception after participating in the simulation at an alpha level of .05 in the categories of enterprise knowledge, business process management knowledge, and transactional knowledge. Post-test perceived attitudes were also significantly different at an alpha level of .05 in two of four categories; ease of use and enterprise resource planning. No significant differences were found in the categories associated with the construct of ERP systems acceptance; performance expectancy, effort expectancy, or attitudes toward enterprise systems. Participants responded similarly to the simulation regardless of initial training; functional or on the job training. Both groups experienced a significant difference in knowledge perception after participation in the simulation in all three categories; enterprise knowledge, business process management knowledge, and transactional knowledge. Perceived attitudes were only significantly different in one of the four categories for each group; feelings about ERP (functional training) and ease of use (on the job training). No significant difference was realized in the construct of user acceptance of enterprise systems for either grouping. Paired sample t-tests performed along the dimension of experience level provided evidence that the simulation had the greatest overall impact on knowledge with users having \u3e5 to 10 years\u27 SAP experience. These participants realized a significant impact on knowledge in all three categories compared to two for participants in the other two groups. Furthermore, a significant difference was identified in 3 of the 4 categories for this group in the attitudes construct. Participants experienced no significant difference in the user acceptance of enterprise systems construct in any grouping. These results suggest that for those individuals with \u3e5 to 10 years\u27 SAP experience, the ERP simulation has a greater chance of enhancing user perception and ultimately ERP self-efficacy
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
