On the razor's edge: between local and overall needs in knowledge organization
This is a 27-slide presentation made at ISKO 2004 (International Society for Knowledge Organization) in London, UK. Recent projects in subject indexing and classification at K.U.Leuven University Library (Belgium) aim to give new impulses to knowledge organization within the institution. While in recent years a lot of attention was given, and with good reason, to the technical and administrative integration of e-sources, less energy was invested in organizing the content of traditional and electronic collections. Nevertheless, presenting information sources in a content-structured way remains a core task of our University Library. This paper focuses on some experiments with subject search interfaces at K.U.Leuven University Library and situates them in a new policy for knowledge organization, which tries to find a balance between local and overall needs

Information Literacy in Academic Curricula - A Case Study of Integration at the Biomedical Faculties of K.U. Leuven University (presentation)

Workshop 2007, Kraków, Poland, 12-15 September 2007Since 2006, the Campus Library of Biomedical Sciences of K.U.Leuven University is reconsidering its role in education and research. Giving access to scientific information is still our libraryâ s most important mission. However, teaching our students and academic staff the skills for efficient retrieval and use of scientific information is increasingly becoming an important task too. In the past, instruction was limited to guided tours and short library instruction sessions, organized on an individual and unsystematic basis. This changed in 2006, when we were asked by the Faculty of Medicine to reconsider part of the medical curriculum in the light of integrating information literacy in it. The following considerations were made: 1. information literacy should be integrated in a systematic way in the curriculum 2. minimal skills of information literacy should be determined for each level 3. instruction in information literacy should be a continuous line starting in the first and ending in the last year (vertical line) 4. information literacy should be acquired in an active way in as many courses as possible (horizontal line) 5. instruction in information literacy is a shared responsibility of library and academic staff As a result, the biomedical library was given the responsibility of information literacy in the beginning of the curriculum of medical students, while academic staff took the responsibility of the rest. At the same time, the library was investing a lot in providing our academic staff with tools, formats and learning objects for integrating information literacy in their lessons. We also started planning systematic trainings for keeping our academic staff up to date with major changes in scientific information. The new curriculum of the Faculty of Medicine was put into practice in October 2006. It was soon followed by similar projects in all other biomedical faculties of our university

Why organize information if you can find it? UDC and libraries in an Internet world
The Belgians Otlet en La Fontaine created the Universal Decimal Classification in order to collect and organize the world's knowledge. This happened in an age when information was almost exclusively made available by libraries. Since the internet, the quantity of information outside libraries is enormous and keeps growing every day. The internet is accessible to anybody, it is fundamentally unorganized and its content changes constantly. Collecting and organizing the world's knowledge seem to have become an impossible ambition. Perhaps it is even unnecessary, since search engines make information retrievable now. And why would we organize information if we can find it? So what will be the role of UDC and libraries in this internet environment? Libraries can still play a role as a major information provider, if they adapt fully to the expectations of a modern end user. The design and the functionalities of online catalogues should allow maximal accessibility, usability and active participation of the end user in the internet environment. Metadata, like UDC, should maximize the visibility of information, enrich it and invite the end user to assign metadata himself
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

What a Subject Search Interface Can Do
K.U.Leuven University Library (Belgium) developed an experimental interface for subject search by UDC in the OPAC. The interface combines the search facilities of a classification with those of a word system, since it enables the end user to search by subject terms and to see these terms in the hierarchy of broader, parallel and more specific terms. This project should be seen as an important indication of the libraryâ s growing concern to present its information sources in a content-structured and user-friendly way. At the same time, it has to be situated in a new policy for knowledge organization, which aims to find a balance between the local and overall needs of a library network. Finally, this project comes at a moment when K.U.Leuven University Library is in full conversion to Aleph 500 software

Subject retrieval in OPAC's: a study of three interfaces
In this paper we study three OPAC interfaces of K.U.Leuven University Library. All three interfaces have been on-line between 2002 and 2005. The characteristics of these OPACs (search fields, labeling of the fields, search facilities, searching vs. browsing, basic vs. advanced search) are systematically examined. Special attention is given to subject search and display, and more specifically to Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). This comparison is particularly interesting because the indexing and classification tools (UDC, Library of Congress Subject Headings, MeSH) remain the same in all three OPACs. However, the way these tools are presented for subject retrieval in the respective OPACs undergoes an interesting evolution. It is demonstrated that subject search and display in library catalogs can be largely improved by investing in optimal use of existing tools. We also stress the importance of user-oriented OPAC design
